We draw an umbrella in Photoshop

In this lesson we will draw an umbrella with you, using various tools, blending modes, layer styles. So let’s get started!

Step 1. Create a new document in flash 512×512 pixels., Background color # 666666.

Hint: to make it easier to work, you can determine the center of the picture with the help of two guides.

Step 2. We draw the umbrella handle. To do this, use the tool Pen Tool (P) (Pen), draw a shape like the image below.

Add layer styles (double click on the layer in the layers panel). Settings look at the screenshots.

InnerShadow (Inner shadow) color #6f401e:

InnerGlow (Internal glow):

Now add GradientOverlay (Gradient overlay) to give the handle a three-dimensional shape.

This result should be obtained after adding layer styles:

Step 3. Add stripes on the handle of the umbrella, so that it looks more realistic. Create a new layer using the Ctrl + Shift + N key combination. Press the Ctrl key and click on the layer with the handle to load the selection.

Activate the tool MoveTool(V) (Move) and shift the selection with the help of the arrows on the keyboard by 4 pixels. up, or press CTRL + T to call the transformation mode and also shift by 4 pixels. Fill the selection with black # 000000. Activate the tool again MoveTool(V) (Move) and shift the selection by 1 pix. up, click Delete.

Note of translator: if you cannot do it as described in the lesson, you can do it a little differently. We load the selection (Ctrl + click on the layer with the handle), on the new layer we fill it with black color, then right-click the up arrow on the keyboard to shift the selection by 1 pix. up., click Delete. You will have the desired band, as in the lesson.

Without removing the selection, press Ctrl + C to copy the strip, Ctrl + V, so that it is duplicated on a new layer. Place this copied strip by 5 pixels. up from the previous lane. Fill, thus, the entire handle of the umbrella, focusing on the image in the lesson.

Merge layers with stripes in one layer. Change this layer overlay mode to Soft light (Soft light), reduce Opacity (Opacity) to thirty%.

Add a layer with stripes layer style Drop shadow (Shadow), settings look at the screenshot.

This is what should happen in the end:

Step 4. We draw the upper part of the handle of the umbrella.
On a new layer with the tool Ellipse tool(U) (Ellipse) draw a black oval (# 000000) as in the picture below.

Now add some layer styles.
The first one is Drop shadow (Shadow).

Second – GradientOverlay (Gradient overlay).

This is what you should have in the end.

Create a new layer, rename it to thick. ” Ctrl + click on the layer with the oval to load the selection. Shift this selection down 1 pix., Fill it with black. Without removing the selection, move it another 1 pix. down, fill it with black again. Repeat these steps until we have a 5 pixel bar. in height.

Add a style to this layer – Gradient overlay (Overlay gradient), which will give our handle volume.
Gradient settings are below.

Step 5. Draw a shadow from the top pen. Create a new layer, move it below the “thick” layer. Ctrl + click on the “thick” layer to load the selection. Move the selection by 2 pixels. down fill color # 1A0B00.

Apply filter FilterBlurMotionBlur (Filter – Blur – Blur in motion) with the settings Angle (Angle) 90 degrees, Distance (Offset) 3 pix.

Use the key combination Ctrl + F to apply the filter again. With the tool Rectangular marquee tool(M) (Rectangular selection) remove the extra part of the shadow that extends beyond the handle. It should turn out like this:

Step 6. We draw continuation of the handle of an umbrella. On a new layer with the tool RectangleTool(U) (Rectangle) draw a shape like the picture from the author. Rename this layer to “pole “.

Add style to this layer. Gradient overlay (Overlay gradient), settings look at the screenshot.

As you can see, the simple application of the gradient made the umbrella handle more voluminous and more realistic.

Being on the layer “pole” go to the menu LayerAddLayerMaskRevealAll (Layer – Add layer mask – Show all). Using tool Rectangular marquee tool (M) (Rectangular selection) create a selection as shown in the picture below, fill it with gray # 828282.

You can try other shades of gray to adjust the opacity.

Step 7. We draw the dome of the umbrella. To create an umbrella dome, I plan to draw five panels – each part of the dome is on a separate layer.
Create the first layer, press the key combination Ctrl + G to create a group. Rename this group to “drapery. Using the tool PenTool(P) (Feather) Draw the left middle part of the umbrella drapery. When drawing, focus on the picture below.

Now you need to add color to our dome. To do this, I apply layer styles. Inner shadow (Inner shadow) with the following settings.

AND Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay), settings, see below.

When you add a gradient, note that the option Style (Style) changed to Radial (Radial). As a result, you will get a shine from the center of the picture, but we need it to be right below. To do this, without closing the layer style settings window, drag the center of the radial gradient in our picture down and to the right. It should turn out as in the screenshot.

Step 8. Draw the following parts of the dome. On a new layer using the tool Pen tool (P) (Pen) draw a shape like in the picture.

We apply similar layer styles, if necessary, adjust the opacity of the inner shadow or the location of the center of the radial gradient.

To complete the umbrella canopy, it is necessary to duplicate the parts already drawn. For this pkm by group “drapery “, in which there are 3 layers with the left half of the dome, in the drop-down menu, select DuplicateGroup (Duplicate group). Press Ctrl + E to merge the layers in the duplicated group into one. Go to the menu Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal (Editing – Transforming – Flip Horizontally). Move this layer to the right to get the umbrella dome as in the screenshot.

Step 9. Add the shadow of the dome on the handle of the umbrella. Create a new layer under the “pole” layer, then click on the “pole” layer with the Ctrl key pressed to load the selection of the umbrella handle. We use the tool Gradient tool (G) (Gradient) black to white to draw a shadow. To do this, drag the gradient from top to bottom, change this layer to blend mode to Multiply (Multiplication), reduce the opacity to 95%.

Step 10. We draw the top of the umbrella. To do this, create a new layer on top of all layers, draw a black rectangle like in the image in any way you know.

To add volume, add a gradient overlay. PCM on the layer “pole” in the drop-down menu, select CopyLayerStyle (Copy the layer style), go back to the layer with the top of the umbrella, also right-click on the layer and select PasteLayerStyle (Paste the layer style). As a result, it should turn out like this:

Create a new layer on top of all layers, draw a gray oval, focusing on the picture.

With the tool Pen tool (P) (Pen) Draw a black shape as in the screenshot.

Add a layer style InnerShadow (Inner shadow), settings, see below:

GradientOverlay (Gradient overlay):

You can also add subtle shadows to make the umbrella look more realistic.

Step 11. Add a shadow from the umbrella. Create a new layer between the background layer and the umbrella handle layer. With the tool EllipticalMarqueeTool(M) (Oval area) make a selection, focusing on the screenshot, fill it with black color.

Reduce the opacity of this layer to 75%. Apply the following filters to it:
one. Filter– Blur – Motion Blur (Filter – Blur – Motion Blur): Angle 0 degrees, Distance 30px
2 Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter – Blur – Motion Blur): Angle 0 degrees, Distance 30px
3 Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur): Radius (Radius) 1.5 pixels

That’s it, we’re done. I hope the lesson was interesting and useful for you. Good luck in your work!
