We draw in Photoshop icons in the style of Pixel art

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create icons in the style of 8-bit games.

1. Contour

Step 1

We will work in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 (but this lesson can be repeated in earlier versions and even in MS Paint). Create a new document. My final result was 113 x 13 pixels.

Take Pencil tool (B) (Pencil) 1 px in size, zoom in the document by 1600% and draw 3 pixels horizontally and one pixel at the bottom corners.

  1. On the next line, draw 7 pixels.
  2. For the bottle neck, draw a shape of 3 pixels in the shape of a letter V.
  3. Next, draw 5 pixels vertically on both sides of the bottle and two lines horizontally between them. These will be the walls of the bottle and the label.
  4. We draw the last line of 7 pixels, which will be the bottom.

Step 2

Drawing a sword, we divide into two steps.

  1. Let’s start with the tip of the blade. We draw 3 pixels vertically and 2 pixels horizontally in the shape of a letter V. After that we draw two parallel diagonals from the corners of the tip, each 14 pixels.
  2. At the end of the upper diagonal we draw 3 pixels vertically and on the second diagonal 3 pixels horizontally.
  3. In the center, where the handle, draw a shape in the shape of a letter V, consisting of 3 pixels. Also on the corners of the extreme pixels draw 2 pixels up and 2 pixels down.
  4. We continue to draw the handle. In the left side, add 3 pixels left and 1 pixel down. In the right side, add 3 pixels down and and 1 pixel to the left.

Step 3

We finish the handle:

  1. We connect the left and right parts of the handle with a diagonal line of a length of 9 pixels.
  2. The handle consists of four V-shaped figures located diagonally.
  3. On the tip of the handle draw 1 pixel to the right and 3 pixels down. Then we draw 2 pixels diagonally, starting from the middle of the previous three.
  4. We finish the sword with three rows of diagonal lines of 3 pixels and one row at 2 pixels.

Step 4

  1. Draw a line 10 pixels long. On both sides of the line draw 2 pixels diagonally.
  2. Next, draw 8 pixels on each side of the chest and 12 pixels below.
  3. In the middle we draw a horizontal line of 12 pixels. Also in the bottom corners we draw on one pixel.
  4. In the center we draw a rectangle with the size of 4 x 3 pixels. 2 central pixels are deleted using Eraser tool (E) (Eraser) (in mode Pencil (Pencil)). Then from the top to the central rectangle draw two vertical rows of 3 pixels each. And on the sides of these are along one vertical line with a height of 4 pixels.

2. Monochrome color palette

Step 1

The colors from left to right are mint (# e0f8d0), green (# 88c070), forest green (# 306850) and dark green (# 081820).

  1. Create a new layer above the stroke.
  2. External contour is painted over with green forest.
  3. Paint the inside with green.
  4. Mint drawing vertical highlights (block 3 x 2 pixels below and in the center, also a few pixels to the left).
  5. Dark green randomly put a few pixels around the edges.

Step 2

We use the same colors.

  1. Create a new layer.
  2. Paint the contour of the sword blade with green forest and the lower diagonal with dark green.
  3. The left side of the blade is filled with mint and the bottom with green. Also add dark green and green forest pixels at the base of the blade.
  4. Mint paint over the lower inner diagonal of the handle, and green along the edges.
  5. The rest of the inside of the sword is filled with green, and the contour with green forest.
  6. Dark green paint over the right part of the handle, and green – the left. The handle consists of three lines and the color on it should go from light to dark.
  7. Fill the right side of the chain with green, mint fill the holes, with green forest – the upper left part, and dark green – between each link of the chain.

Step 3

We use the same colors.

  1. Create a new layer above the layer with the outline of the chest.
  2. We paint the outer contour with green forest.
  3. Dark green paint over the central horizontal line and the lower part of the castle.
  4. Dark green paint the bottom corners. At the bottom of the chest green draw vertical stripes at a distance of 2 pixels from each other.
  5. Fill the gap in the bottom of the mint and one pixel of green forest in the corners.
  6. Mint paint the highlights on the trunk lid.
  7. The rest is filled with green.

3. Four-color palette

Step 1

Now let’s take other colors: cream (# f8dd92), lime color (# 9bbb0e), sage color (# 73a067) and dark forest green (# 0f380e).

  1. Create a new layer above the stroke.
  2. Fill the outer contour of the bottle with dark green forest.
  3. Fill the inside of the cream color using Pencil tool (B) (Pencil) or Paint bucket tool(G) (Fill).
  4. On the neck we draw one row of pixels with the color of sage. The same color fill the label in the middle.
  5. Top of the fill color lime.
  6. Also, with the lime color we paint highlights on the label and in the lower corners.

Step 2

Create a new layer above the stroke.
To speed up the process, highlight the sword tool Magic wand tool (W) (Magic Wand) and fill the selection with the Fill Bucket Tool (G) (Fill).
Lime color fill the central diagonal of the blade, the handle and the holes in the links of the chain.
Color sage paint over the bottom of the blade and the rest of the handle.
Cream fill the upper part of the blade.

Step 3

  1. Create a new layer above the stroke.
  2. Paint over the outer contour and center line with a dark green forest.
  3. Fill the rest of the inside with the color of lime, and the central 2 pixels with cream.
  4. Next, on the left side and at the top of the cream color we add highlights.
  5. Sage color draw several vertical lines across the entire height of the chest.
