We draw the book in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to draw a leather-bound book in Photoshop using various textures and layer styles.

Source materials:

STEP 1. Create a new document.
Open Photoshop and create a new document.

STEP 2. Fill the background with color # 412405, using the tool Fill (paint brush tool).

STEP 3. Create a new layer, then go Editing – Fill (Edit> Fill) and select your pattern.

STEP 4. Change the blending mode for this layer to Spot Light (Pin Light), reduce Opacity (Opacity) layer up to 24%.

STEP 5. Create a new layer, name this layer ‘book ’, then select the tool Pen (pen tool) and draw the shape of the book.

STEP 6. Apply layer styles to the book layer.

STEP 7. Now, we will add a light highlight to the book, create a new layer and name this layer ‘highlight’. Choose a soft round brush of 172 px, color shade # b74322 and apply a brush in the corner of your book.

STEP 8. Now we will add a highlight on the spine of the book. Create a new layer and select 51 px soft round brush (#FFFFFF). Hold down the Shift key and draw a line across your image. Holding the Shift key helps us to draw a straight line with a brush.

STEP 9. Next, select the free transform tool. Editing – Free Transformation (Edit> Free Transform) and rotate the line so that the angle of the line coincides with the corner of the book, remove the extra parts that fall outside the book.

STEP 10. For this layer, change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light), and reduce the layer opacity to 85%

STEP 11. Shadow
Create a new layer, name it ‘shadow’. Select a soft round brush of 95 px, color shade # 3b0d06 and paint over the edge of the spine of the book and at the bottom of the book. I created a selection around the book, so I’ll have to use an eraser. To create a selection, you must hold down the Ctrl key + click on the thumbnail of the ‘book’ layer.

STEP 12. Next, add even more shadows, but this time using a darker shade # 310c05.

STEP 13. Pages
Create a new layer, name it ‘page’. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool) and create a form, as in the screenshot below, then fill the created shape with a color tint # ffffff.

STEP 14. Add a Inner Shadow (Inner Shadow).

STEP 15. Create a new layer, select the tool. Rectangular area (rectangular marquee tool), further, create a rectangular selection, as in the screenshot below and fill the selection with the Strip pattern. Let’s go Editing – Fill – Pattern(Edit> Fill> Pattern).

STEP 16. Next, go Editing – Free Transformation (Edit> Free Transform) and rotate the rectangular area so that its angle of inclination coincides with the angle of inclination of the ‘page’ layer.

STEP 17. Delete unwanted areas.

STEP 18. Add layer styles Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

STEP 19. Duplicate this layer and change the settings. Change at the beginning Opacity (Opacity) layer to 38%, and then change Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay).

STEP 20. Bookmark
Create a new layer. Name this layer ‘bookmark’. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool) and create a bookmark form. Duplicate this layer.

STEP 21. Add layer styles to the first layer.

STEP 22. For the second layer ‘bookmark’, which is located below the first layer, change the opacity to 49% and in the layer styles change Color overlay (Color Overlay).

STEP 23. Apply Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur).

STEP 24. Create a new layer, then create a selection of the ‘page’ layer and apply a stroke to the selection.

STEP 25. Erase the stroke and apply a filter. Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur).

STEP 26. Create another layer to this layer, we will apply the same stroke. Create a selection of the ‘book’ layer.

STEP 27. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool), set up a brush, set a soft round brush of 7px, color shade # ffffff and draw marks on the spine of the book.

STEP 28. Change Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 9%.

STEP 29. Create a new layer and draw additional labels, but this time change the brush settings, set the brush to 7px, color # 421209.

STEP 30. Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply) and lower the layer opacity to 76%.

STEP 31. Open the skin texture, align it, remove excess areas that extend beyond the book’s borders.

STEP 32. Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply).

STEP 33. Choose a tool Arbitrary shape (Custom shape tool) and set the shape as in the screenshot.

STEP 34. Rotate the shape so that it aligns with the book. Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce the opacity of the layer to 64%.

STEP 35. Apply layer styles.

STEP 36. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool) and draw a strip, color shade, which I used to fill # 732811.

STEP 37. Create a new layer and apply the skin texture to the strip we created. Change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply).

STEP 38. Apply layer styles Shadow (Drop Shadow).

STEP 39. Duplicate this layer, but turn off layer layer visibility. Shadows (Drop shadow), clicking on the eye of the duplicated layer.

STEP 40. Select the soft round brush tool # 240603, create a new layer and apply a brush on the edges of the strip on a new layer.

STEP 41. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light), reduce the layer opacity to 48%.

STEP 42. Create a new layer, select the tool. Pen (pen tool) and draw a small clasp.

STEP 43. Add layer styles

STEP 44. Create a new layer and add skin texture, change the blending mode to Linear dimmer (Linear Burn).

STEP 45. Choose a tool Brush (brush tool) and paint the shadows around the little clasp using the color shade # a16a49. Change the blending mode for this layer to Multiplication (Multiply).

STEP 46. Create a new layer, set a 23 px soft round brush, hue # 2c0d05 and draw a line.

STEP 47. Let’s go Editing – Free Transformation (Edit> Free Transform) and align along the spine of the book and change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light). Remove excess parts that fall outside the book.

STEP 48. Create a new layer, name this layer ‘lock’. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool) and create a form as shown in the screenshot below.

STEP 49. Add layer styles.

STEP 50. Create a lock selection and apply compression to 5 px. Selection – Modification – Compress (Select> Modify> Contract).

STEP 51. Apply a stroke. Editing – Perform Stroke (Edit> Stroke).

STEP 52. Add layer styles.

STEP 53. Create a new layer and use the pen tool to draw a keyhole in the lock.

STEP 54. Add layer styles.

STEP 55. Choose a hard round brush of 9 px, color shade # 000000 and draw a hole below the keyhole.

STEP 56. Add layer styles.

STEP 57. Duplicate the hole layer and place a copy of the hole on top of the clasp.

STEP 58. Select all the layers that belong to the leather-bound book, and put all the layers in one separate group. Duplicate this group and place the group below the original group. To the duplicate group, apply a layer – mask and on a layer – mask with a black brush process the bottom part of the book.

In the duplicated group, find the layer with the bookmark and the layer with the shadow of the bookmark and flip them vertically. Let’s go Editing – Free Transform – Flip Vertically (Edit> Free Transform> Flip Vertical).

STEP 59. Create a new layer, select the tool. Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) and create a rectangular selection on the left side of the image, fill the selection with a color tint of # 000000.

STEP 60. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).

STEP 61. Create a new layer and use a soft round brush to draw a spot at the top of the document, using the color shade # ffffff

STEP 62. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).

STEP 63. Choose a tool Text (type tool) and type any text at your discretion. I used the word “Book Fair”, I used the font ‘Champagne Limousines’.

STEP 64. Add layer styles.
