We draw the pirate in Photoshop

Photoshop is not only a powerful tool for image processing and photo manipulation, it is also a convenient platform for creating images themselves. Today we will draw such an interesting character, I will show you the whole process.

We will draw such a pretty pirate without using any source, templates and stock images. We will use the tools to create forms, we will try to properly use the shadows and highlights, brushes and so on. We need Photoshop CS3 or higher. And go!

Create a new document. Take the tool Rounded rectangle tool (Rectangle with rounded corners) radius of 40 pixels and select the color # ebbda1. Next, on a new layer, draw such a form — it will become the face of a pirate. Hold Shift to make a square shape.

Now take the tool Pen tool (Pen) with mode Auto Add / Delete (Auto Add / Remove). Go back to our square and click in the middle of its bottom side to add a reference point. Now (the Pen is still active) we hold down the Ctrl key and drag the datum down, as shown in the picture.

Release Ctrl and delete two adjacent points.

To create ears use Ellipse tool (Ellipse). Hold Shift while you draw an ellipse so that the shape with it falls on one layer with a square shape. Next, duplicate and reflect on the other side.

We draw a rectangle using the appropriate tool – it will become a bandage. Color – # a42335.

As we have done above, we add a reference point to the lower edge of the dressing and drag it a little lower. Like this:

Using the pen, we draw tails that will peek out from behind his right ear. We place them for the shape of the face.

With the help of two ellipses draw the eyes. White oval, and in it is black, on different layers. We merge these two layers into the “Left Eye” group.

Instead of the right eye, draw a bandage using ellipse and rectangle tools.

Next, draw a mouth. White colour.

Add the following styles for the left eye:

And these are the styles for the layer with the mouth:

Now add the following ellipse, as shown below. Drag the control points down. Above we add another ellipse.

Another ellipse for mustache. Add two anchor points and drag them down.

Now using the pen to draw hair. You can draw only the left side, then duplicate, apply FlipHorizontal (Flip horizontally) and drag to the right side. Next, we merge all these layers into the “Head” group.

For the front of the hat we draw just such a black shape.

Add another form and place a layer with it behind the layer with the front part.

Draw the shape for the rim with the color # b47b02.

Create a new layer on top of the layer with the front part of the hat and fill it with black. Hit Ctrl + Alt + G and use FilterSketchChalk Charcoal (Filter – Sketch – Chalk and coal) with the following parameters:

Do the same with the back of the hat. We group all these layers into the “Hat” group.

Add just such a white form under the “Head” group.

To draw the legs, use the pen. We draw the left foot, we duplicate, we reflect and we drag to the right, holding Shift, to keep your feet level.

Using the same pen, draw clothes. You may need to add more than one form here, so hold Shift, drawing the first shape so that the others stay on the same layer. Color – # 361b0c.

Create a new layer on top of the jacket layer. Fill it with color # 7a7a7a and create a clipping mask, holding Ctrl + Alt + G. Apply FilterSketchNotePaper (Filter – Sketch – Postage Paper) with the following parameters. Change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap).

We draw white parts of sleeves and a shirt.

And the black parts:

Draw hands with color # ebbda1.

For a layer with a jacket draw a rectangle, or rather a belt.

Back to the face. Holding Ctrl, click on the appropriate layers to create a selection in the form of them. Using elliptical selection, remove the top part, as shown below. To do this, select the area that you want to delete, while holding Alt.

When you release the mouse button, the part you selected will be removed from the selection. Create a new layer and fill it with the color # ebbda1.

We press Filter – Noise –Add Noise (Filter – Noise – Add noise). Next, create a clipping mask by holding Ctrl + Alt + G.

Now we will deal with shadows and highlights to make the drawing a little more voluminous. You need to try to understand where on the face should be dark parts, and where are light. Create a layer with clipping mask “Shadow 1” and change the layer blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication). Using a soft black brush, paint over the dark parts of the face, as shown below. I marked the zones with green arrows. Brush color – # ebbda1.

Now choose the color darker. Create a layer “Shadow 2” with clipping mask. Take the color, for example, # d69e7b. Do not forget to change the blending mode, as in the last step. Increase the level of opacity – let it be 20%.

Another layer with clipping mask and the same blending mode, and choose an even darker color – # c27545. The opacity level is slightly increased, and the diameter of the brush is reduced to make it more convenient.

We also need to add the darkest shadows under the hat and under the bandage – we use black for this. Here you can do it yourself. Next – the glare. Create a new layer with overlay mode. Screen (Lightening). Color # ebbda1 draws the area, as shown in the picture to the right.

To add depth, create a clipping mask over the layer with the mouth. Use black soft almost transparent brush.

Let’s work with shadows and highlights on the bandage. Create a new layer on top of the dressing layer. Add a clipping mask, holding Ctrl + Alt + G, and change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication). Name the layer “Shadow 1” and take a round soft almost transparent brush (settings below). In the process, change the size of the brush as you like. Let’s start with the edges – there are the least shadows. Use the color # a42335, where you need darker – # 940c1f, where it is even darker – # 770213. For the darkest areas, use black.

Next, paint the highlights on the new layer with the Screen blending mode (Brightening) with the color # a42335.

For tailings only add shadows.

Next, add glare to the bandage. Naturally, on a clipping mask.

Create a new layer on top of the layers with a beard, mustache and hair. Adjust the “Dune Grass” brush as follows:

The foreground color is black, the background is # 2a2b2b. 100% opacity. Adjust the size as you need.

Next round soft brush We add highlights to the hat. Use colors # 2a2a2a and # 555555.

Do the same with the back of the hat.

Add a clipping mask and select the color # b47b02. Use blend mode Multiply (Multiplication) for shadows and Screen (Brightening) for highlights.

For belt use color # a42335. Again all the same – Multiply (Multiplication) for shadows and Screen (Brightening) for highlights.

For a shirt, you can add only shadows We use colors # b8b8b8, # d3d3d3 and # 818181. Blend mode naturally Multiply (Multiplication).

Next, we will work on the folds of the jacket. Use clipping mask and color # 361b0c. Multiply (Multiplication) for shadows and Screen (Brightening) for highlights.

Add shadows to the white part of the sleeves.

And the glare on the black part.

For shadows on the hands, use # ebbda1, # d69e7b and c27545 and blending mode Multiply (Multiplication). Glare – # ebbda1 and Screen (Lightening).

We do the glare on our feet with # 2a2a2a and # 555555. Blend Mode – Screen (Lightening).

Double click on the background layer. Choose the foreground color # 4e606e, the back color is white. We press FilterRenderClouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds). To make them sharper, hold Alt by clicking with the left button.

Hold Alt, click on Filter, holding Alt, move the cursor to RenderClouds and let go. Clouds will be sharper.

Add gradient styles for the clouds.

On the new layer draw the shadows under the feet of our pirate. Two types of shadows. The first type is thin and soft. The second is thicker. It should turn out like this:

Create a layer on top of all the others. Hit D to select black and white as primary colors. We press FilterRenderClouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds).

Lower the opacity value to 75% and change the blending mode to Screen (Lightening). Add a layer mask. Next, use a soft round brush to wipe the clouds covering the pirate with black.

And you’re done!
