My name is Zainab R., I am a young but ardent designer from Lahore (Pakistan). I have been infected with art since childhood, moving from traditional to digital art. Although I have already gone far, and I have a lot of experience, I still continue to develop and try to expand my creative abilities.
We will create work based on the concept of ice and flame. In this lesson you will learn how to achieve this combination as quickly and easily as possible.
Materials used:
Step 1: Planning
Open in Photoshop the image you would like to work with. Before looking for a model, determine for yourself what position it should be in order to satisfy your idea. Our concept is ice against flame. We want to portray a sleeping girl, who seems to be reborn again. Her calm will be transmitted in the form of ice, and her awakening in the form of fire. Start with the assumption of how ice and fire will be located around the girl. I used a soft round brush of orange and blue for a rough outline of fire and ice. Now I have a clear idea in which direction to move, so let’s get started!
Step 2: Spray Effect
I like to create unusual effects all the time, it helps to reveal my idea. We will start by creating a splash effect. Create a new layer above the layer with the main image. Choose a tool Brush (Brush), and then in the brush palette, select the splatter brush. Now select a specific area in your base image and create a single stroke with a brush on this surface. In this case, I put a stroke on top of the girl’s shorts. Make active the layer with the girl in the layers palette. Then, remaining still on the layer with the girl, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the layer on which you created the spatter stroke. Now the resulting brush pattern will be highlighted on your canvas. Then just press the key combination Ctrl + C (approx. Per .: perform this action to copy the selected area), and then Ctrl + V (approx. Per .: perform this action to paste a selection on the new layer). Thus, you selected a piece from your main stroke-shaped image created with a spatter brush. Move the resulting shape to another place to create an effect. It feels as if her shorts are breaking or flying apart, in any case, you will see it. Now, using the same technique, create even more shapes and place them so as to have a destructive effect.
Step 3: Ice Effect – 1
Now that we have created an additional effect, let’s get down to our main idea. We will start by adding ice on the girl’s body. Make sure that you remember the direction of the ice that was planned earlier. To achieve the ice effect, we need several different stock images. Before you are stock images that I used to achieve the first part of the ice effect. Pay attention to the fact that the ice forms are ideally suited to the contours of the girl’s elbow. Clearly visible where they can be located. Press Ctrl + T (approx. Per .: perform this action to call the tool Transformation (Transform)), this way you can resize the stock image to the one you need. Then place it on top of the girl’s elbow. Install blending mode (blendingmode) this layer on Lighten (Screen). Take the tool Eraser (Eraser) and erase areas that extend beyond her arms, or that do not look good. Then I took the third stock image and added it to her upper hand using the same technique.
Step 4: Ice Effect -2
Now take a stock image with water splashes. In images with splashes of this kind there is an advantage in that they somehow resemble frozen drops. We will take this image and place it on the right under the girl’s elbow. Install blending mode (blendingmode) on Lighten (Screen), and make the necessary corrections with the tool Eraser (Eraser). Create a new layer under all stock images, set it to Color tone (Hue). Take the tool brush (brush) and paint the girl’s hand a little with a soft blue brush. This will give her hand an even greater frosty effect.
Step 5: Ice Effect – 3
Now, take the tool Pencil (Pencil). Set its color to white and create a few scratches on your hand in order to focus more attention on the ice. Circle the strands of her hair falling in the area of ice. You just created the first ice effect. Later we will work on an effect that will help us add more strength to the ice. Now, using the same method, using the stock image, a soft brush and pencil, add another ice effect to the girl’s body. We already have very good results, but only through the use of stock images and layer settings. We are done with the effect of ice, now is the time to move on to the effect of fire.
Step 6: Flame Effect – 1
Instead of using real stock images with fire, we will act a little differently. To achieve the effect of the flame, I used stock images with a nebula. It seems to me that using such images instead of images with real fire will bring more magnetism to work. Take the first image with a nebula, place it on top of the girl’s chest and arm, setting the layer mode to Lighten (Screen). Then take Eraser (Eraser) and erase those plots that we don’t like. Here’s what I got:
Step 7: Flame Effect – 2
Using the same stock images, I placed them on another part of the girl. I use the same sources, because in the previous step, I have erased many parts of the image that I can use in another part of the girl’s body. What I am doing now. Continue to add images with nebula. This step is entirely based on the flight of your own fantasy.
Step 8: Background
I like the background texture on the main image, but I still want to add something else to it. Therefore, I found this cute stock image on deviantart.com. and just set the mode of this layer to Lighten (Screen), applied it to the bottom of the image. Using tool Eraser (Eraser) I corrected this image.
Step 9: Colorization -1
Add a little more color to this area. As we work on the basis of the concept of flame and ice, we will use those colors that most advantageously emphasize these elements. Create a new layer and set it to mode. Soft light (SoftLight). Take the tool brush (brush) and choose the color that best matches the flame / nebula effect. Paint over some parts that you think are necessary to give them depth. In this case, I painted the hand of the girl.
Step 10: Colorization-2
Paint where you think it is necessary, then change the color to blue and do the same where it is needed. Change if necessary opacity (opacity) for individual strokes, create a separate layer for each stroke. Click on the icon Create new fill (Create new fill) or Adjustment layer (Adjustmentlayer) in the layers palette and select Gradient Map (Gradientmap). Select Gradient Map (Gradientmap) from Magenta to orange (PurpletoOrange) from the default settings. Install opacity (opacity) layer about 20%. Click on the icon again. Create new fill (Create new fill) or Adjustment layer (Adjustmentlayer), but this time select the option Selective color (Selectivecolor). Choose the settings that best suit your work. Here are the values that I chose:
Red (Red):
Cyan (Blue) -23,
Magenta (Purple) +13,
Yellow +7,
Black (-23);
Yellow (Yellow):
Cyan (Blue) -7,
Magenta (Purple) +20,

Magenta (Purple) -5,
Yellow (-7),
Black 0;
Black (The black):
Cyan (Blue) +1,
Magenta (Violet) -1,
Yellow (Yellow) +3,
Black +2.
Step 11: Final Effects
We are almost done. To add effect, I took two floral brushes and added them over the hand of the girl and her breasts, set the mode of the resulting layer to Soft light (SoftLight). Place this layer below all layers, but above the main image, so the shapes from the brushes will blend in with all the other effects. Now create a new layer (at the top) and go to the menu Image – External Channel (Image – ApplyImage). Click OK. Then go to menu Filter – Artistic – Applique (Filter – Artistic – Cutout). Use settings default (default) or apply them at your discretion. Click OK. Choose a tool Eraser (Eraser) and erase those sites that you do not like. Create a new layer and apply again. External channel (ApplyImage). Go to menu Filter – Sharpness – Sharper (Filter – Sharpen – Sharpen). Before you successfully and easily completed work.
