In this tutorial, you will learn how to add the rainbow lighting effects of your photo and turn a boring photo into a stylish image.
Step by step we will give you tips on how to work with light effects in Photoshop. Mainly, we will work with layers, combining various methods, brushes, and also we will use some textures and images.
As you can see from the final image, you can add a very elegant light effect to your photo and share your achievements with your friends. In addition, I think that such an image would look good on the wall.
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1. Let’s start with choosing a good photo. Here the author used the image from shutterstock. He extracted the model using the tool. Pentool (Pen), and then channels to extract hair. There are many lessons available, including on our website in order to complete the separation of the object, you can use any method convenient for you.
Step 2. Download some of the grunge backgrounds available on Deviantart and Sxc.hu, place them in your document as the basis of your composition. In this case, the girl was originally on a grunge background, so the author simply removed the model to a new layer, and used the original image as a background.
Now create a new layer, and fill it with a diagonal gradient with colors: from 621f80 to 00b4e5. Erase some, mainly the face and body.
Change layer blending mode to Softlight(Soft light) with transparency 90-95%.
Duplicate the gradient layer and reduce its transparency to 45%. Now it looks much better. You can use any combination of gradient of your choice, it will give different results.
Step 3. Create a new layer and then apply the image. Make another layer and use the spray brushes that you can find on the Internet. The author used high resolution brushes – Bittbox. Used color does not matter.
Now hide this layer and select the previous one. To apply the splatter we choose Layer-> Create Clipping Mask or (Alt + Ctrl + G). As a result, we get that the current layer will be masked only where we used the brush brush. Now select Move tool (Move) and move the image
You will get the desired effect. To get a better brush effect, choose brighter colors; the author used brushes with a soft airbrush in fuchsia and blue.
Step 4. Repeat the above process in different places where you like it.
Step 5. Make a new layer, fill it with black and change the blending mode to Colordodge (Lightening basics), Lower transparency to 77% and start working with a large soft brush of this 696a70 color, as well as pink and magenta. This will add some brightness to the background.
Step 6. Now make a new layer and add a layer mask to it, then go to Image> External channel, then in Filter> Distortion> Wave and press the randomize button 3-4 times. Fill the model on the layer mask with black so that the model is not visible.
Before using a layer mask:
After using the layer mask:
Step 7. Create a new layer and apply the image (CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E), then apply the edges glow, for this we go to Filter -> Stylize-> Glowing Edges (Filter-> Stylization-> Edge Glow), use the following settings:
(Edge width – 3 | Edge brightness – 9 | Smoothness – 1)
After apply Image-> Adjustments-> Invert (Image> Correction> Invert) or (CTRL + I).
Change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiply) or split in CS5 with transparency reduced to 15%. This will give you more intensity to colors.
Step 8. Now it’s time to add some smoke to the girl’s hands. The author found it on deviantart and sxc.hu. Place it on your canvas, cut and place it near her right hand, discolor, blend mode Screen (Screen), and add level correction (Ctrl + L). Move the left black triangle slightly to the right.
Step 9. Now add some circles to the background, to do this, create a new layer and capture your Ellipticaltool (Elips) draw the appropriate shape (in our case a circle). After you have drawn a circle, go to the Layers panel and at the bottom select the blending options in the tab Pattern (Overlay pattern). The author chose an oblique line model to give some dynamics to our image. Once you have selected the pattern and clicked OK, set the layer blending options to Soft Light and reduce transparency to 22%.
Step 10. Lets add some more color. Create a new layer and fill it with black, change the blend mode to Colordodge (Lightening basics) and start drawing around the model. You can use any colors to your taste, the author used the following: 784c13 4f4e0e 718 290 718 290.
Step 11. I repeated the above around the corners of the image with color 748694, and changed the blending mode to Colordodge(Lightening basics).
Step 12. The author again made a new layer, filled it with black color and started drawing lines of 4f163b color to her hands and legs as shown in the following image, blending mode Colordodge(Lightening basics).
Step 13. Now load the light strip (you can take such light stripes from this lesson). The author placed it near the girl’s shoulder, resized and transformed into a rasterized layer, then you need to add a layer mask to the image. Remove unwanted light, change blend mode to Screen.
We do this 3-4 times with different light stripes, placing them in the girl’s body, resizing as if they are wrapped around her.
Do not forget to add a layer mask to each of the elements to remove unwanted light, then we will use Pen tool (Pen) to add lines of yellow and green.
Step 14. Then we add yellow, light cyan and magenta (ec188f) to create a glowing effect. Make a new layer and select a soft brush with transparency 30-40%, blending mode Screen.
Create a new layer again and add a soft point. brush colors (fffb1d) to the left of the previous layer.
Finally, also add white light to the image so that it is in the middle between the two previous ones.
After this is done, add another new layer below the purple light layer, representing a spray of white light.
Step 15. Repeat this process with the light lines once again around the legs and the girl’s arm.
Step 16. Add some lines to the image, for this we take a hard brush with a radius of 2-5 px of any color and start working Pentool (Pen). To do this, we make a diagonal line, right-click on the line and select Stroke path (make sure the imitate pen pressure checkbox is checked) then click Ok.
Make a group of three lines and arrange them as shown in the image:
Step 17. Make several copies of this and place in different places on both sides of the model, see the help image below:
Step 18. Download some bokeh brushes from deviantart, the author also took them from there. After selecting the brushes, press F5 to open the brush palette and set the following settings:
And start painting on canvas and also play with size and transparency to get different results.
Step 19. Now add some rectangular shapes, select Rectangularmarqueetool (Rectangular area) and create some rectangular selections. Fill the selection with white, then go to Filter> Blur> Motion Blur: angle 90 offset 999. Finally change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) and reduce transparency. Add some shadow effect in the layer blending options.
Step 20. Click Ctrl + T, to transform and rotate a rectangle at an angle of 45 or 50 degrees and duplicate many times. Place the resulting image in the corners, see the photo below:
Step 21 Add a new color balance adjustment layer for the girl layer and set the following settings:
Step 22 Make another adjustment layer. Selective color correction, and edit red, yellow, cyan and magenta. The author has experimented with various settings.
Step 23 Add a new layer with a gradient of blue – red – yellow and invert; blend mode Softlight (Soft light), opacity is 11%.
Step 24 Add a new layer overlapping gradient from black to white, blend mode Softlight (Soft light), with an opacity of 16%.
