In this tutorial, I will show you how to create interesting photo manipulation step by step using ice and flame textures.
Our final result will look like this (click on the image to view the work in a larger size):
We can start!
Create a new document sized 860px * 1140px with a black background. Download the image of the metal texture in Photoshop and select the area as shown below:
Copy and paste the selection into our document, change its size to cover the working canvas completely. Then go to menu Filter – Strokes – Emphasized Edges (Accented Edges filter) apply the following settings:
You should have a similar result:
Using soft Eraser (Eraser Tool), remove the edges of the metal texture, as in the example:
Now we will add some adjustment layers on top of the previous two layers.
Black and white (Black and White):
Load the model image in Photoshop. Separate, in any way convenient to you, the girl’s face from the background and paste it into our document, as shown below:
Next, go to Filter – Blur – Blur on the surface (Surface Blur). Set the following settings:
Use soft Eraser (Eraser Tool), erase the edges of the face, as shown below:
Add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask for the model layer:
Black and white (Black and White):
Draw a layer mask of the adjustment layer. Black and white (Black and White), with a black soft brush in the areas shown in the figure below.:
Draw a black soft brush with a layer mask of the adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) :
Here’s what we got:
Now we will add an ice texture.
Download the image “Ice”. Activate the tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) to select a fragment, as shown below:
Copy and paste the selected piece of ice into the main working document. Set a layer of ice as a clipping mask to the face layer:
Next we add an interesting crystal effect in which the filter will help us. Crystallization (Crystallize filter).
Apply adjustment layer Black and white (Black and White) for a layer with a piece of ice:
Change the blending mode of the ice texture layer to “Bright light“(Vivid light):
At this stage, we got the following result:
We now turn to work with the image of fire.
Open the image “Flame”. Using any of the quick selection tools and separate the fire from the background, copy the flame to a new layer.
Place the flame in the main document under the model face layer. Use the tool Free transform (Free Transform Tool) to change the shape of the fire texture to the shape of the face.
Duplicate the fire texture layer. Place the flame over the girl’s head:
Now add to the work a little mystical mood.
To do this, simply duplicate the fire layer and apply a correction. Black and white (Black and White):
So your fire looked like smoke:
Duplicate the smoke layer several times and place at your own request around the model’s face:
Add some more ice texture.
To do this, download the Ice texture set (from the source materials for the lesson). Select your favorite image. Activate the tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) and separate the image fragment:
Copy the selection and transfer it to the document with the work. Set the blending mode for this layer to Screen (Screen).
Using the tool Free transform (Free Tranform Tool) change the size of the texture fragment and place on the left side of the model’s face. Duplicate the ice texture layer several times. Move and transform copies, decorate them with a portrait.
We are almost done! Add the last notes.
On top of all previous layers, create such adjustment layers as:
Selective color correction (Selective color):
We finished the lesson. My final result looks like this:
I hope you liked the lesson and will be useful in further work. See you! Have a good mood!
