In this tutorial, you and I will create a fantastic abstract poster using textures, light effects, and layer blending.
Beginners do not recommend taking this lesson!
Before we begin, you need to download two images:
First, take a look at the final result:
Step 1 – Prepare the Background
Create a new document with the size of 1655х2132px and fill it with black color.
Step 2. Create a new group and call it “background” Layer – New – Group … (Layer – New – Group …). This group will contain the main elements that are needed to create the background. Create a new layer in this group and fill it with black. We reset colors to the main D. Apply filter Filter – Render – Clouds (Filter – Rendering – Clouds).
Step 3. The next thing we need to do is apply Radial Blur to this layer. Move on Filter – Blur – Radial Blur (Filter – Blur – Radial Blur):
Step 4. We press CTRL + F, to apply this filter again.
Step 5. Call Levels (Levels) CTRL + L:
Step 6. Using Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal Lasso), create multiple selections (to create multiple selections simultaneously in different places, hold down the SHIFT key). Click on one of the selections with the right mouse button and select Feather (Feather), set the value to 100%. Press the key several times DELETE, to remove selected areas.
Step 7. Double-click on the layer with which we work, to call the Layer Style (Layer Style). Choose Gradient overlay (Gradient overlap) and set the following parameters:
Create a clean layer under the one we work with. Holding the key CTRL, select layers and merge them together (CTRL + E). Blending mode (Overlay mode) layer is set to Linear dodge (Linear brightener) and duplicate it (Blend copy mode must also be Linear Dodge).
Step 8. Duplicate the layer again and apply the filter. Twirl (Twisting) Filter – Distort – Twirl (Filter – Distortion – Twisting) with Angle 350.
Step 9. Create a new black layer above the “twisted” and add a little noise to the filter. Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter – Noise – Add Noise):
Apply Radial Blur Filter – Blur – Radial Blur (Filter – Blur – Radial Blur). Duplicate filter CTRL + F.
Call the settings Levels (Levels) (CTRL + L) and set the parameters 50 – 1- 90. Erase the edges with Eraser tool (Eraser) (E) using a soft brush. We put Blending mode (Blend Mode) layer on Color dodge (Lightening the basics), and opacity (opacity) at 60%.
Step 10. Now it’s time to use one of the textures that you, I hope, have already downloaded. Upload an image Dragon’s Lair Nebula in photoshop and duplicate on our main document. With help Free transform (CTRL + T) customize the size. Wash the edges with soft Eraser . Expose Blending mode (Blend Mode) on Linear dodge and 80% opacity.
Step 11 – Color correction
With the group “background” we are finished. You can close it by clicking on the small triangle near the name.
Now create a new group and call it “correction”. Create a new layer inside the group and, using a soft brush (B), draw a pink spot # ff00f0, again create a new layer and draw a red spot # fe3c00 and for the third time on a new layer we draw in orange # ff6c00. To simplify the correction, each color should be on a separate layer.
For each layer, we set the following parameters: pink – Linear dodge (Linear clarifier) and opacity (opacity) 21%; red – Linear dodge (Linear clarifier) and opacity 5%; Orange – Linear dodge (Linear clarifier) and opacity (opacity) 21%.
Step 12. Create a new layer and fill it with the color # eca700.
Install Blend mode on Color (Chroma) and opacity by 24%.
Step 13. Repeat Step 12, but this time with color # 00af3a, use and (chromaticity) and opacity (opacity) 11%.
Step 14. Repeat Step 12, but now use color. # 001eff, Color (color) and opacity (opacity) 16%.
We load the second texture into Photoshop. We transfer to the main document and locate separately above all layers and groups. Change Blend mode on Overlay (Overlap).
Step 15 – Create a Symbol
We have finished working with the correction group. In the next part of the lesson, we will focus on creating the Omega Code symbol (if you want, you can create your own symbol).
Create a new group between the “correction” and “background” groups and call it “omega”. In it we will create the symbol “Omega”.
Create a new layer. We press CTRL + A, to select the whole picture, and CTRL + SHIFT + C, to copy all the layers then CTRL + V, to paste them on a new layer. Thus, all the work was on one layer, while all other layers and groups remained untouched. Place this layer inside the group “omega”.
Using tool Custom shape tool (Arbitrary figure) create a triangular shape and place it in the middle of the whole composition.
Step 16. Create a selection around the black triangle (holding CTRL, click on the layer thumbnail on the layers panel). Hide the triangular layer by clicking on the eye on the layers panel. Invert selection SHIFT + CTRL + I. Now activate the layer that was created in Step 15 (merged copy of all layers). Delete the area from the layer with the key DELETE.
Step 17. Make visible a layer with a triangle and rasterize it (right-click on the layer – Rasterize Layer (Rasterize layer)). We press CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + B and set the following parameters:
Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light). Duplicate the layer and change the blend mode to Multiply (Multiplication) and opacity (opacity) 10%.
Step 18. Now we have to create 4 new triangles. But before that, duplicate the shape that you created in Step 16 and apply the settings. Blackwhtie (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + B), then Levels (Levels) (CTRL + L) (0 – 1.00 – 176).
Step 19. Now create a small black triangle. This triangle should occupy 1/4 of the largest. Duplicate it and, using Free transform (CTRL + T), slightly reduce the copy (while reducing, hold down ALT + SHIFT, to keep the proportions). We rasterize it and select it (hold down the CTRL key and click on the thumbnail). Go to the original and, having rasterized it, press the key DELETE. Remove duplicate. So we created a triangular frame.
Step 20. Duplicate the frame three times and place it as in the image below:
Step 21 Create a selection around one of the triangles, then activate the layer with a large triangle and press CTRL + C, then CTRL + J to paste the copied area onto the new layer. Remove the layer with a small black triangle.
Step 22 Repeating Step 21 for all small triangles and hide the layer that we created in Step 18. As a result, each shape must be on its own layer.
Step 23 Apply Blending options (Blending options) (to invoke them, double-click on the layer with the left mouse button) for each of the four triangles.
Step 24 Now, using Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal Lasso) (L), select as shown below. Create a new layer and apply a white to transparent linear gradient to it. Blend mode set on Overlay (Overlap) and opacity by 70%. Trim the edges soft Eraser .
Step 25. Continue to create more such reflections, glow.
Step 26. The same technique on the left side of the symbol:
Step 27. And the bottom.
Step 28. Now we, using the same technique, draw round reflections. To do this, activate the tool Elliptical Marquee Tool (Oval selection) (M), invert the selection (SHIFT + CTRL + I) and use radial gradient. Blend mode set on Overlay (Overlap) and opacity 88%.
Step 29. The next thing we have to do is use Pen tool (Pen) (P), draw reflections along the edges of four small triangles. Use white color, Blend mode set on Overlay (Overlap), opacity (opacity) set to your liking.
Step 30. Pen also create small reflections, then apply to them Blending options (Blending options). To make the edges softer, we correct them Eraser (E)
Step 31 Duplicate existing ones or create new shiny stars to make our symbol truly shine!
We are done! I hope you learned from the lesson something new for yourself! View the final version in a larger size here.
