Create a realistic embossing effect on paper in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a realistic embossing effect on paper in Photoshop using layer styles. Using the effect Bevel and Emboss (Embossed), you can easily create an engraved, carved, or paper effect in Photoshop using various textures, such as stone, wood, paper, and even leather.

Here is the style of the text that we will create in this lesson. The effect of embossing on paper can be applied to text layers, as well as custom shapes.

Step 1

First we need to create a paper texture for our effect. So let’s download the seamless texture of coarse paper and place it on a new layer. This texture is white paper, but we can color it using any color. We will do this later.

Step 2. Create a vector logo in Photoshop

Create your own design; You can use text layers, vector shapes, or even raster images. You can find many custom shapes to your taste.

For the text, the author used the Trajan Pro bold font and a custom laurel wreath shape. Using the text layer and custom shapes, you can easily create your personalized vector logo.

Step 3. Creating the effect of embossing on paper in Photoshop

To create an emboss effect in Photoshop, we will use only one layer style. So open the layer style window and add these effects: Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss (Embossed) and Color overlay (Overlay color).

After adding a layer style, our image looks like this:

To add this layer style to a vector shape layer, simply right-click on the text layer and select Copy Layer Style (Copy layer style). Go to the layer with the laurel wreath, right-click and select Paste Layer Style (Paste layer style).

Step 5

If you want to change the color of the laurel wreath, you can do it by changing the style of the layer. Go to layer style Color overlay (Overlay color) and change the overlay value to Multiply (Multiplication), and then select the color you want. I used the green color # b3e582.

Step 6. Scaling the Layer in Photoshop

If you want to add a new text that is different in size, you can copy the layer style and use the parameter Layer> Layer Style> Scale Effects (Layer> Layer Style> Impact Layer Effects).

This effect is perfectly combined with other types of paper textures, for example, with cardboard paper.

Step 7 (optional)

If you want to change the color of your image, you can add an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient map). The first color of the gradient is black, the second color of your choice.

Using other textures, you can create similar effects in Photoshop using similar layer styles.
