Create a retro comic effect in photoshop

In this tutorial, in a few simple steps we will create a retro comic effect in Photoshop. For work we will use a special pattern, textures and filters. Filter Photocopy (Photocopy) is also great for creating such an effect.

Step 1

Open the template for the comic book in Photoshop. It is already with a transparent background, so we don’t have to cut something extra.

Next, go Image – Canvas Size (Image – The size of the canvas). Put a tick in front Relative (Relative) and increase the width and height by the same value.

Below the template layer, add a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) and using Paint Bucket Tool (G) (Fill) fill it with white.

Via Rectangle Tool (U) (Rectangle) create three shapes under each of the rectangles of the pattern. You can choose any color.

Step 2

Add a photo above the first rectangle. Then click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask) or use the key combination Ctrl + Alt + G.

Apply to photo filter Filter – Artistic – Poster Edges (Filter – Imitation – Contoured edges) and adjust it at your discretion to get the desired result. You can adjust the thickness and intensity of the black outline. You can also set the level of posterization.

To adjust the brightness and contrast, above we add an adjustment layer. Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Levels (Layer – New adjustment layer – Levels). Click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).

Step 3

Using the above technique, add a photo on the remaining rectangles: photo 2 and photo 3.

The comics template also has conversational clouds where you can add any text. For this, we can use the black Arial font.

Step 4

To create a scuff effect, add a grunge texture on a new layer over the template and all its elements. Switch its blending mode to Pin Light (Spot light).

Double click on the texture layer to open the window Layer Style (Layer style). After that, at the bottom, adjust the black slider This Layer (This layer) to hide the black tones.

Above we add an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels). Click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).

Step 5

To create the effect of old paper, add another texture on the new layer. Switch its blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication).

Create an adjustment layer Levels (Levels) and add contrast to the texture. Right click on the adjustment layer and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).

Step 6

As a final touch above all previous layers, add an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) and increase the brightness of the picture. You can also add contrast, saturation, etc. To make the picture clearer, you can apply a filter to it. High Pass (Colour contrast).

This is what the finished retro comic effect looks like.
