Create a spectacular illustration with a male face

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an interesting photo manipulation with a human face and roots.

For the lesson will need several additional materials:

Step 1. Create a new document with a black background of any size (I used 700×700 pixels). Load the portrait of the model in Photoshop using Pen tool (Feather) (P), create a facial contour:

Click the right mouse button on the contour and select Make selection (Create selection), copy (CTRL + C) and paste (CTRL + V) selected area onto the working document, adjust the size and position it in the center:

Soft eraser (E) erase the edges of the face to create a soft transition to the background:

Step 2. Now we take the loaded grunge brushes and use them to erase some areas of the face, as shown below:

We use Burn tool (Dimmer) (O) in mode Shadow (Shadow) and with exposure (impact) 15% in the upper part of the face, in order to prepare it for further application of corrective layers:

Add three adjustment layers above the face layer and transform them into clipping masks (CTRL + ALT + G):

Black and white (Black and white)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

And we get this effect:

Step 3. Create a new layer under the layer with a soft orange face. brush (B) draw in the eye area, as shown below:

Create another layer above the previous one and soft yellow brush (B) add a spot in the eye area:

Go back to the adjustment layer Black and white (Black and white) from the previous step – on the mask of the layer with a black soft brush (B), delete some black and white areas around the eye:

Step 4. Now we will add roots to the photo. Load the image into Photoshop and select it as shown below:

Copy (CTRL + C) and paste (CTRL + V) the selected area onto the working document, then apply the filter Filter – Noise – Reduce Noise (Filter – Noise – Reduce Noise):

Soft eraser (E) adjust the edges to get the following result:

Add three adjustment layers and transform them into clipping masks (CTRL + ALT + G):

Black and white (Black and white)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

We get the following result:

We transfer all these layers into a group (CTRL + G), duplicate it several times and place it around the face, as shown below:

You can use the filter Filter – Liquify (Filter – Plastic) to deform some roots, as shown below:

Step 5. Now we can add light effects around the eye and top of the head: use soft brush (B) in blend mode Overlay (Overlap) to color the areas shown below:

We can also add flying lines in the image: hard at first brush (B) draw a blue line 1 pixel wide:

Then filter Liquify (Plastic) we deform this line to add the effect of flight:

Then create a new layer above the blue line and transform it into a clipping mask (CTRL + ALT + G), use a soft white brush (B) to draw a point at the front of the line, and change the blending mode of the layer with the point to Overlay (Overlap). This will add a glow to the end of the line:

Group (CTRL + G) these two layers, duplicate the group several times and arrange the copies in the image, as shown below:

You can draw lines on your left eye to add a motion effect:

Step 6. We are almost done! In this final step, we will add a grunge texture around the face with brushes that we loaded at the beginning of the lesson:

Use corrective layer Color balance (Color balance) in the eye area to enhance the yellow color:

Tip: draw a selection around the eyes with Lasso Tool (Lasso) (L) with feather (feather) 20px, then add a correction layer Color balance (Color balance). Thanks to this method, color correction will be applied only inside the selection area.

I added some additional colors and light corrections and got the final result:
