Create an abstract portrait of a girl in Photoshop

This is what we should have in the end:

Sometimes, in order to create a real masterpiece, you only need a good photo, an interesting idea and a little time. Today I will show you how to create a picture in Photoshop, which for myself I called “Abstract portrait of a beautiful woman in golden tones”.

Create a new document in A3 format. However, you can choose a different format, it does not matter. It just seems to me that it is much easier to work in a format with a large resolution, so as to work out the details more thoroughly. I bought a photo that you see on, but you can search for more interesting and high-quality images on the DeviantArt website or on any other website.

Now we will place the image in the main document and try to distribute the light and shade on it. I went around the places where we would have light or shade in red and green circles. You don’t need to do this, I just wanted to show where we’d dim, and where we’ll brighten our image.

Now take EllipseTool (ellipse) and draw circles:

Do not forget to set the transparency of this tool to 20%. Now fill the circles with black and white, don’t worry about the little things, we will finish everything later. And for convenience, you can set the transparency of the layer with the image of a girl by 50%.

Do not forget to change the size of the circles from large to small. Of course, this part of the work is a bit boring, but the result is worth it. Focus on how it looks on my image:

.Now repeat this step again, but add circles around the girl, create the effect of movement of these circles, as if they are floating in the air. If it turns out not very beautiful, do not be afraid. We will fix this later:

Now add some color. I opted for golden brown shades, but I don’t know what your choice will be. Activate again EllipseTool (Ellipse) and add light shades to the light areas of the image and, accordingly, dark shades to the dark areas.

Reduce the opacity of this layer to 35% to slightly dampen the colors, then open a new layer and add some black and white shades to it.

Our composition gradually takes the necessary outlines: Now let’s adjust the brush like in my picture:

Begin to color the dark and light areas, which at the beginning of the lesson I circled in red and green lines. Try not to go beyond them. Reduce the transparency of the brush to 30% and use only black or white colors:

This is how the layers palette should now look:

Duplicate all the layers that are above the main image with the girl, and then merge them. Place the resulting layer at the top. Create now clippingmask(clipping mask) to the layer under the one that came out after merging the layers with the circles. It sounds a bit confused, but look how it looks from me:

After that, I merged the top 2 layers, set the blending mode to overlay(overlap) and reduced transparency to 20%. Then – duplicated this layer, set the blending mode for the copy softlight (soft light) with 80% transparency

It’s time to add details. I circled in red areas with which we have to work:

Activate the tool Ellipse (ellipse) and set its transparency to 20%. We will add more black and white color in those areas where it is needed. Focus on my drawing:

Now we will work on the circles that float around the girl. We will place the main light accent in the upper left corner of the image, and for this we use the tool gradient (gradient). Set the gradient from black to white. The bottom right corner should be the darkest, and the top left corner should be the lightest. Now change the blending mode to softlight (soft light). Transparency leave 100%.

Now our composition looks as one. But the background is still boring. As a rule, I use another photo for the background layer, then applying a blur effect to it. What we do now.

I bought the image you see on You can also go to, there are many interesting options.

Open your chosen photo. Then go to Filter > Blur > GaussianBlur(filter – blur – blur according to Gauss) and set the blur radius – to 65. Change the blending mode to softlight (soft light) with a transparency of 100%. Duplicate this layer and set its transparency to 15%.

Now we have to add a few more effects. I created some special big circles using gradients. Experiment a bit, this is a very creative part of our work:
Note: I drew circles on a gray background, so they are best seen. Make each circle on a separate layer, then you can freely move and duplicate them separately.

Some parts of our picture are still not expressive enough. Let’s add more light and shade. The easiest way to do this is to select a soft brush with a diameter of 550 pixels and on the new layer draw such light and shade with black and white. After that, change the blending mode to softlight (soft light) and set the opacity to 50%.

Some more small details. For them, you have to work with a soft, and with a stiff brush of small diameter. Set the parameters scatter and spacing in the brush settings to the maximum, and arbitrarily draw on different parts of the image.

Almost done. Take now pentool (pen) in mode Path and a very large brush to create lines around our model. I also added a few more subtle details. Take a look at my screenshot to see what I mean. Don’t forget to check the box next to the function. Simulate pressure, when you emphasize the outline (Stroke Path).

.Now go back to Filter > Blur > GaussianBlur(filter – blur – blur according to Gauss). If you have blurred some unnecessary areas, simply erase them on the layer mask:

At the end, I added some brightness by creating correction layers (AdjustmentLayer), such as Contrast / Brightness (contrast/brightness) and Tone / Saturation (hueandsaturation).

Here is the final result:
I placed the image horizontally, it seems to me that it looks better. And he added his logo. You can do the same, at the end of work on your picture:

I hope that everything worked out for you and you were satisfied with the results of your work.
And I say goodbye to you today. See you again!
