In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a splatter illustration in Photoshop using brushes and some filters. Let’s start!
Final result:
Materials for the lesson:
Create a new document (Ctrl+N) at AdobePhotoshop by size 800px * 1068px (Rgb color mode (color mode Rgb)) with permission 300 pixels/inch(pix / inch). Use PaintBucketTool (Fill tool) (G) to fill the background layer with # 4A4B41.
Add some noise to the background layer by applying the following filter: Filter > Noise > AddNoise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise).
We get the following result:
For this layer, set Fill (Fill) on 57% and change BlendingMode (Overlay Mode) on HardLight (Hard Light) in LayersPanel (Layers panel).
Find a stock photo of a jumping person. I used this photo from the site sxc.hu. I would like to thank the author of this photo:
Cut a person using tools like PenTool (Pen Tool) (P), MagicWandTool (MagicTag Tool) (W), MagneticLasso (Magnetic Lasso Tool) (L) or even Filter > Extract (Filter> Extract) and paste it on a new layer in our main document.
Select Image> Adjustments> Hue / Saturation (Image> Adjustment> Hue / Saturation) (Ctrl + U) and drag the slider to the left to decrease Saturation (Saturation) of the color range of the layer containing the jumping person.
As a result, we get:
Create a new layer. and select brush Soft round black (Opacity 15%)
Use brush Soft round, to darken the top and bottom of the document. Place this layer below the layer with the jumping person:
Next, make a copy of the layer containing the effect of noise:
… and select for it Filter> Blur > Motion blur (Filter> Blur> Blur In Motion)
As a result, we get the following:
For this layer, set Fill (Fill) at 27% in Layers panel (Layers panel):
Now create clipping mask, to make the contents of the motion blur layer visible only within the contents of the dark edge layer. Pinch Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click between the last layer created and the layer with dark edges (on Layers panel (Layers panel))
We get this effect:
Create a new layer. and use on it Lasso Tool (Lasso Tool) (L) to draw a selection with an arbitrary border, as shown:
Next, you need to paint on the top edge inside the selection, using a brush Soft round white color. In the beginning, you need to use a large-diameter brush to mark the border.
then use a brush Hard mechanical smaller diameter for drawing edges.
This layer should be placed below the layer with the jumping person.
Create a new layer. and apply the same technique here to image a similar border at the top of the layer.
This layer should also be placed below the human layer:
We get the following effect
Create a new layer. and apply a black Spatter brush on it (Opacity 10%)
to darken the bottom of the image. This layer should be located under the human layer:
Click on the icon Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask) at the bottom Layers panel (Layers panel) of the same layer and draw on the mask using brushesHard mechanical black to smoothly hide dark spots.
Got the following effect:
Create a new layer again. and select the Spatter brush
Draw this brush along the edges of the layer. Brush color # FDC689 (Opacity 10%). Place this layer under the human layer.
Create the following new layer and use Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular Selection tool) (M) for the image of a similar selection:
Then, right-click inside the selection and select Transform selection (Transformation Selection), tilt it as shown below:
Use brush Spatter inside the selection and paint on the top edge with white.
We get the result:
Make a copy of the last created layer with a slant line and select the command Free transform (Free Transformation) (Ctrl + T) to rotate the copy of the layer and position it in the same way as shown in the following image. The layer should be located below the layer with the person:
Create a new layer. and use here brush Oil Medium Wet Flow for drawing on the central part of the image. Brush color # F2DABB (Opacity 29%). This layer should be placed under the layer with the jumping person.
Use the brush in the next step. Spatter for drawing on the edges of a layer:
Got the following result:
Install Blending mode (Overlay mode) for this layer Vivid light (Bright light)
On the next new layer apply brush Spatter black (Opacity 5%) to add a couple of spots in the center of the image.
Place this layer under the human layer:
Again create a new layer and select brushes Soft round and Hard mechanical different diameters for the image of several scratches. The color of the brushes is black (Opacity 5%).
We get the following result:
In the next step, download the brush sets for Adobe Photoshop, whose names are: Blood_Brushes_by_Zattitud3 and Blood_splatter_brush_by_AnnFrost_stock.
Create a new layer. and select the following brushes from downloaded sets. Color brushes # BF100D. Use a different transparency for brushes. This layer should be placed under the person layer:
We get the following result:
On the next new layer Use the brushes from the above sets to make a few spots of color # FBC671. Place this layer lower than the layer with the jumping person:
Apply the following settings Drop shadow (Shadow) for the layer by clicking on the icon Add ALayer Style (Add Layer Style) at the bottom Layers panel (Layers panel)
We get the following effect:
Now create the following new layer and re-use the brushes from the above mentioned sets. Color brushes # 677159
Click on the icon AddALayerStyle(Add Layer Style) at the bottom LayersPanel(Layers panel) and select DropShadow(Shadow)
Got the following effect:
On the next new layer use brushes from the sets: Blood_Brushes_by_Zattitud3 and Blood_splatter_brush_by_AnnFrost_stock. They will be needed for drawing in the area along the human body. black. Choose a different Opacity (Transparency) and place this layer also under the human layer:
Select CreateNewFillOrAdjustmentLayer(Create New Corrective Layer Or New Fill Layer) at the bottom LayersPanel(Layers panel) and click on Curves(Curves) to adjust the shape of the curve as shown.
Correction layer also place below the layer with the jumping person:
Create a new layer. and select brush Hard mechanical, to gently draw the hands and face of a person.
Brush color # E7BF82
Set for this layer Fill (Fill) by 55% and Blending Mode (Overlay mode) Color burn (Blackout Basics).
Done!
