In this tutorial we will create a very simple effect for a photo. After creating this effect, the image will look like a picture painted with watercolors, as well as have a grunge texture.
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1 – Texture
First you need to find the texture of worn paper. I took mine from a set by reference in the archive. Open it in Photoshop and enhance the contrast with Correction Levels (Image> Adjustments> Levels) (Image> Adjustments> Levels). The size of the document with the texture is 558×837 pixels, and the resolution is 72dpi.
Step 2 – Adding a Photo
Insert a photo of John Lennon in our textured paper.
With the help of the same Correction Levels (Image> Adjustments> Levels) (Image> Adjustments> Levels) increase the contrast. Depending on the image settings may be different. Next, apply Watercolor filter (Filter> Imitation> Watercolor) (Filter> Artistic> Watercolor). And this time, the settings may be different. The purpose of the filter is to create a watercolor effect.
Step 3 – Align with Texture
Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) on top of the rest. Go to channel palette (Window> Channels) (Window> Channels). Select the RGB channel (hold down Ctrl and click on the channel thumbnail).
Go back to the layers palette, select a new layer and add mask (click on the mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette). Press Ctrl + D to remove the selection on the canvas. Click on the layer mask icon and press Ctrl + I to invert the colors. Photo layer can be removed.
Choose some grunge brush (I use a paid set). On the top layer, paint the canvas in bright colors.
Use different colors to get a result similar to the screenshot below.
Additionally, you can add a frame around the image, filling the selection with white color with an opacity of 60%. Do not be afraid to experiment with this effect, it can be very different.
