From this lesson you will learn about several methods of color correction. You will also learn how to draw realistic freckles, change hair color, insert scratches and cuts on the skin and replace the background. All of this you will learn in the course of the lesson, in which we will turn an ordinary guy into a doll.
First, select the photo you’ll work with. I will use this:
Unfortunately, now it is no longer available for free download, but I hope you can find a suitable replacement for it.
If you are new to Photoshop, then try to choose a photo with a more uniform background, since in the future you may have problems deleting it.
To begin, we will correct the color, since the photo has a pronounced reddish tint, but we do not need it. Therefore, we will fix everything using Color Balance. Image – Adjustments – Color Balance (Image – Correction – Color Balance).
To continue editing this image, we need to unlock the background layer. We can duplicate it (CTRL + J), then delete the original or left-click the mouse twice on the layer and click OK in the window that appears.
The guy in the photo is turned a little to the side, so we have to “align” it. If a Ruler inactive, press CTRL + R on the keyboard. At the top and left of the line appeared. Click on the vertical left mouse button and, without releasing, drag the guide line to the right, placing it somewhere in the middle of the face. Then rotate the photo using Free transform (CTRL + T).
We remove the auxiliary line View – Clear guides (View – Remove auxiliary lines). The guy’s right shoulder is not visible. Fix it.
Move on Image – Canvas Size (Image – The size of the canvas) and increase the size of the canvas until there is not enough space to insert the shoulder. Activate Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal lasso) (L) and select the left shoulder, copy it to a new layer (CTRL + J) and turn Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal. With the help of Free Transformation (CTRL + T) we adjust the shoulder to the main pattern.
Merge layers together with CTRL + E. Then activate Clone stamp tool (Stamp) (S) and retouch the defect formed at the point of contact of the new shoulder with the body.
So that the shoulders are not too identical, let’s add some light to the right one (the one we inserted). To do this, create a new layer, click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).
Activate Gradient tool(Gradient) (G), choose the gradient Foreground to Transparent (From basic to transparent), set the color to white, and draw from the edge of the shoulder closer to the center. Due to the fact that we have created a clipping mask, the layer with the gradient will only affect the shoulder area. Blending mode (overlay mode) set to Soft light (Soft light) and reduce the opacity (opacity) to 60%.
Now we need to get rid of the background. We begin to remove the background around the head, because of the hair here is the most difficult area. Choose a panel Channels (Channels) (it is located in the same place as the layers panel); click on all channels and select the one on which the hair looks more or less normal. As a rule, the green channel is the most acceptable. Copy the selected channel. Move on Image – Adjustments – Shadow / Highlight (Image – Correction – Shadows / Lights) and apply the default settings. Then call Image – Adjustments – Levels (Image – Correction – Levels) (CTRL + L) and set the following parameters:
Go back to the layers panel and create a new layer. Apply Image – Apply Image (Image – External channel) and select the channel Green copy.
Select the background using Magic wand tool (Magic wand) with Tolerance (Tolerance) at 20, and invert the selection Select – Inverse (Select – Invert) (SHIFT + CTRL + I). Now we activate the color layer and add a mask to it by clicking the button Add layer mask (Add layer mask) at the bottom of the layers panel:
With this not very difficult procedure, we got rid of the background.
Remove the gray layer to which the channel was applied, we no longer need it. Now we have a new layer with no background. If the hair began to look not very beautiful, you can, using a small round brush, draw individual hairs to give them more volume, life. So I did with my work. Create a new background layer. We place it under a layer with a guy and fill it with a color that would look harmonious against the general background:
So it is time to transform. Let’s start with the eyebrows. Activate Clone stamp Tool (Stamp) (S) and, clamping the ALT, copy the skin area and transfer it to the eyebrows. If you do not know how to use Stamp, then on the site http://photobecket.com there are wonderful lessons on working with it.
Now take the tool Patch tool (Patch) (J) and correct the place where there were eyebrows. To do this, select the problem zone with the Patch and drag the selection to the place that you want, as it were, to “patch”.
Next we have to distort the head a little. Move on Edit – Transform – Distort (Editing – Transformation – Distortion).
Apply filter Filter – Liquify (Filter – Plastic) (SHIFT + CTRL + X), activate tool Turbulence tool (Turbulence) (this tool is quite simple to work with, you just need to practice a little). Increase the eyes, not forgetting to change the size of the brush when working. We get this tadpole with puppy eyes:
Activate Brush tool (Brush) (B) and go to its settings Window – Brushes (Window – Brushes).
On the new layer, draw the eyes in black. Change color to white and paint highlights. Opacity (Opacity) and Hardness (Hardness) brushes medium.
After applying the filter Liquify (Plastic) lower eyelids turned out to be ryzymtym. Now fix it. If you don’t see such a problem in your work, you can skip this step.
To correct this error, we will do the following. Take a sample of color tool Eyedropper tool (Pipette) (I) with a light area of skin and brush paint the eyelid. Next, using Burn tool (Dimmer) and Dodge tool (Clarifier), we are doing light-and-white manipulations with the eyelid.
On the inside of the eyelid, draw a narrow strip of white and blur it with a tool. Smudge tool (Blur) with an opacity of 40%, also adjust a little Stamped and Patched. At the end of a dark brown color outline the eye contour to make them more expressive.
The next step will be face retouching. Copy the layer with the guy, convert the duplicate to smart object (right mouse button Convert To Smart Object (Convert to a smart object)) and add a layer mask to it. Make sure you have it black, if not, invert the colors CTRL + I. Take Brush tool (Brush) (B) white with blurred edges and sketching the areas of the cheeks, chin, forehead and other open areas of the face. Go from mask to layer by clicking on its thumbnail on the layers panel and apply Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur):
Change the Blending mode of the layer to Luminosity (Glow), fill (fill) 50%.
Merge two layers together (CTRL + E). Adjust the color of the lips so that they are less contrasting. Apply Image – Adjustments – Hue / Saturation (Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation) (CTRL + U) with the Reds channel (Red).
So that our doll does not freeze :), we will give it a little bit. Here you have to apply brush drawing skills. But you can leave it as it is. In the process, do not forget to adjust the opacity and brush size. That’s what happened with me:
Now let’s draw almost dolls freckles. I used a brush that I created in Photoshop myself. Make it the same, I hope, you will not be difficult (the process of creating brushes is also described on http://photobecket.com). Change the size, opacity, pressure.
Lower the opacity of the brush to 30% and reduce its size so that the freckles look like freckles and not like birthmarks.
We draw on a new layer. Then change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiply), and fill (fill) by 50%.
Add some more large stains and merge all layers, except the background, together. Adjust color Image – Adjustments – Selective Color (Image – Correction – Selective color correction):
Focus on the hair with highlights. With a white brush on the new layer, we paint the strokes on the hair and change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap).
Choose a different color that fits the hair and on the new layer we draw it.
Change Blending mode (Overlay mode) to Overlay (Overlap). You can also reduce the opacity (opacity). Experiment with the settings Image – Adjustments – Hue / Saturation (Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation) to get a more interesting result. You can try to dye your hair in several colors and add a couple of black and white nuances.
Now we will immerse the doll in a mystical atmosphere. For a start, let’s apply the shadows. Use a large brush with soft edges. We draw on a new layer in dark color.
Blur the shadow filter Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) (radius (radius) – 34). Change Blending mode (Overlay mode) to Multiply (Multiply) and reduce fill (fill).
Now we focus on the bright areas. We act on the same method, only Blending mode (overlay mode) set to Overlay (Overlap) and reduce the fill (fill) to 20%.
Add scratches. For cuts we use three colors: dark red for the edges of the cut, black for the inside and white for the edging. After we change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap).
Create a silver ring in the lip. The basis for it is painted in white. Then put a shade of gray and slightly smear the tool Smudge tool (Finger).
Then take a tough brush 1px in size and very carefully detail the ring, putting on it more shadows and highlights.
Most of the lesson has already been passed, it remains only to edit the background. To do this, create a new layer and place it over the main background. We take this texture here:
Load it into Photoshop and transfer it to the document with which we work. We multiply it (CTRL + J) and carefully place it on the background. Merge all duplicate textures together and change the blending mode of the resulting layer to Overlay (Overlap).
Now we take just such a texture with a peeling wall:
Use CTRL + A to select it, copy CTRL + C and paste CTRL + V into our working document. Place it above the previous texture. Change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiplication).
Let’s give the wallpaper an older and dirtier look. To do this, add a texture with old crumpled paper.
Change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap). Call Image – Adjustments – Levels (Image – Correction – Levels) (CTRL + U) and Image – Adjustments – Hue / Saturation (Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation) (CTRL + U):
Next we need to add a shadow. To do this, create a new layer and place it under the layer with the doll. Hold down the CTRL key and click on the layer with the doll, as a result, a selection will be created along the contour. Fill it with black. Copy this layer several times and apply to each copy filter gaussian blur (Blur according to Gauss) with different radius. With the help of Free Transformation (CTRL + T) we place the shadow in the right place.
You can also take a big soft brush white or black (you can take any other that suits your work) and “conjure” with shadows and light to make the work more interesting. Experiment with Blend Modes.
In the end, I decided to change the shape of the eyes and glare using the method described above.
