The effect of three-dimensional tentacles

In this tutorial we will do a 3D effect. The author called it the Tentacle effect.

Step 1. Create a Background
Create a new document (Ctrl+N), put the size 640 x 480pix. Then install for foreground (main color) # F5840C (shade of orange), and background (background color) # 000000 (black).

You can choose colors at your discretion, the effect will not change, but it will look different.
Then create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) or icon CreateanewlayerThe effect of three-dimensional tentacles (Create a new layer) on the layers palette and apply the Cloud filter to it. Filter – Rendering – Clouds (Filter – Render – Clouds)
The result will be approximately the same.

The color combination turned out to be dark. To lighten: duplicate layer (Ctrl+J) and change the overlay mode to Screen (Lightening), reduce Opacity (opacity of the layer) to the desired result. The author stopped at 61%.

It should turn out like this:

Step 2. Preparing the Finger tool.
In the future we will use the tool. SmudgeThe effect of three-dimensional tentacles (Finger), as a stroke outline, but before we get to this step, we need to set the size of the brush.
To do this, select the Finger tool. SmudgeThe effect of three-dimensional tentacles(Finger) R), in the tool settings, put hardness (hardness) 19%, and Diameter (brush size) 46 px. The size of the brush will depend on the size of your image.

Just put in the settings Strength (Intensity) 76% and note that there would be a tick next to “Use all Layers » (Sample of all layers), it is very important to get the effect we need.

Step 3. Draw a line for the Tentacle.
With the tool Pen The effect of three-dimensional tentacles (Feather (P)), draw a line like this.

If you do not know how to use Pen, see this lesson:

Pen tool settings should be as follows:

Without removing the outline of the drawn line, proceed to the next step.

Step 4. Create Tentacles.
When everything is ready: Background, Tool Finger and its settings, the frame for the future Tentacles, go to the next step.
Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) or the icon “Create a new layer” The effect of three-dimensional tentacles on the layers palette, so that he would be above all layers.

Choose a tool Pen The effect of three-dimensional tentacles and right click on the image. In the drop-down menu, select Stroke path (Run the outline of the contour). In the pop-up window, select the tool. Smudge (Finger) and put a tick on againstSimulate Pressure ”(Simulate pressure).

Click Ctrl+H, to remove the contour drawn with a pen. As a result, you should have this.

Since, earlier we chose, in the settings of the Finger “Sample of all layers” tool, the Tentacle turned out on a separate layer, this will further allow to carry out all possible manipulations with it.

Create another pair of Tentacles, repeating the above,
Draw a contour with a pen, create a new layer, stroke the outline with your finger.
The number of Tentacles depends on your desire. The author repeated 4 more times.

Pay attention to the layers palette. As a result of this arrangement, the tentacles will, as it were, intertwined.

Step 5. Apply a layer style.
To ensure that the lesson does not drag on, consider the applications. Layerstyle (Layer style) on one Tentacle. Different variants can be applied to the following Tentacles, using the settings below for the basis.
Stamping.
Click on the Tentacle layer twice to open the window Layerstyle (Layer style).
In the window that appears, select Bevel Emboss (Embossed).
Set the following settings:

Next, select Contour (Circuit).

Then Coloroverlay (Overlay color). In this lesson, the author used color. # D47D11
Change Blendingmode (overlay mode) on Overlay (Overlap).

Now select Gradientoverlay (Gradient overlay). Gradient put from black to white, Blendingmode (overlay mode) on Multiply(Multiplication). If you need to change, for example, from white to black, then just tick the box Reversed (Inversion).

That is the result that you will succeed.

Now apply the same to the following layers. Click on the layer with the right button, select CopyLayerstyle (Copy layer style), then on the next layer, right-click PasteLayerstyle (Paste the layer style). If necessary, you can change the angle, color, gradient. Please note that changes would occur only on the layer on which you work. It is also important that opposite Usegloballight (Global Illumination), did NOT tick.
That’s what the author eventually did.

Using this method, you can, for example, tie such a knot here.

I wish you good luck in execution.
