In this lesson, step by step, you will learn how this illustration was created with elements of a grunge style.
In addition, the author will acquaint you with his technique of drawing hair and methods of creating textures using brushes. To achieve the result, the Pen tool was used in separate steps.
If you still have not made friends with this tool Photoshop, I strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the lessons from the Photoshop Tutorial, for example, this.
Final result:
Let’s get started
To complete this lesson, you will need the following materials:
Step 1. Create a new document sized 700px * 950px. Using grunge brushes, draw some kind of texture, leaving imprints on the edges of the document (when you paint the texture, make sure that you adjust the pressure and opacity of the brush, use different brushes).
Create a new layer and choose another brush. Now work with a larger brush, but with a lower level of opacity. Work through the center of the document.
Step 2 Upload a model image. Separate the model from the background using the most convenient method for you (the author uses the tool Fast selection (quick selection tool), because considers it the fastest and most convenient).
As you can see the girl has a short haircut. The author thought that long hair would look better.
So, what we need: the first is to finish the hair by hand (you will learn more about this in Step 3) and the second is to add various textures around the model.
We erase part of the hair using a soft eraser .
With the help of grunge brushes, we add a “rough” texture under the girl, thereby placing it on the “sinful earth”.
We continue to add a variety of textures around the model using grunge brushes, while using white color.
Add a few dark brush strokes around the violin, bow and girl’s hands.
What you need to remember when drawing texture with grunge brushes? Use a variety of settings for size (size), opacity (opacity) and flow (push). A variety of settings will help you to avoid a boring and monotonous result, add depth to the image.
The author added several curls of hair to the girl using a brush. with size settings (size) – 3px, flow (pressure) – 75%, color – dark gray.
Another author added hair on top of the girl’s head. When painting with a brush, try to repeat the shape of the head.
Step 3. Well, here we come to the interesting part of the lesson – drawing hair.
Choosing a tool Pen and proceed to the creation of the contour:
Now use the function “Stroke contour“. Before this, you need to adjust the brush. When creating a contour stroke, make sure that you tick the box next to – simulate pressure (imitate pressure).
Here is what you should get:
Duplicate this hair (or curl, as you like) several times (about 10-12) put the layers with the hair in a group. The group is designated as the “hair group”:
Place the “hair” just drawn by us over the girl’s hair:
Duplicate the “hair group” several times. Place duplicate hairs at your discretion.
With some effort, you will get something like this:
Step 4. Now let’s start creating abstract lines around the model. First we need to adjust the brush.
Shape Dynamics (Dynamics of the form)
Scattering (Scattering)
Other Dynamics (Other Dynamics)
Check the box next to settings such as Airbrush (Airbrush), Smoothing (Smoothing), Protect Texture (Texture protection).
Create a new layer below the model layer and name it “abstract lines”. Using the brush you just set up, make a few prints, as shown below:
Next, apply a filter to this layer with brush prints. motion blur (Motion Blur) with these settings:
The next step is to apply Warp (Transform – Warp):
Having finished transforming the layer to your liking and discretion, duplicate it several times. Place the layers with abstract lines as shown below (do not forget that you can reflect, deform and distort the lines to your taste).
Step five. And what next? Next we add some layers with abstract lines over the girl’s hair. To create lines, use the method described above, while using a different color, namely light gray. Draw and arrange the lines as shown below (do not forget that for convenience and speed of work you can duplicate a group with drawn lines about 10-12 times).
Duplicate “hair” until you get a similar effect:
To “hair” of different colors did not look fragmented, they need to “mix”. To do this, add a new layer on top of all layers and, using a white soft round brush, add light as shown below (set the blending mode to Screen (Brighten) and reduce the opacity to 60%).
Further, I decided to add several adjustment layers to give an illustration of the appropriate mood:
Curves (Curves)
Layer Mask on Curves Correction Layer:
Color Balance (Color balance). Set the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light).
The author decided that it would not be superfluous to add Smart Sharpen (smart sharpness) for the image. In addition, the author added a few highlights to create some shine around the girl.
