We apply the effect to the photo in the style of Instagram

We’ve seen it all on Instagram. This effect is a mixture of retro and vintage style with a touch of cross processing (cross-processing). We see this effect as a hipster photo effect. No matter how you call this effect, its appearance is very attractive, and it is very easy and quick to recreate it in Photoshop with the help of several adjustment layers. In this short tutorial, I will show you how to create this effect.

OK. Let’s get started!

The final result:

Step 1

Download the original image from the link at the beginning of the lesson or you can use your photo.

Step 2

Open your favorite image in Photoshop. Add adjustment layer Black and white (Black White), click on the icon Create a new adjustment or fill layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and in the appeared window select the option Black and white (Black White).

Apply the settings for this adjustment layer. Black and white (Black White) by default. Reduce value Opacity (Opacity) adjustment layer up to 60%. We still have some color shades, but the general tones are now much muted.

Step 3

Next, we add a light cross-processing effect.

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves). Set the curves for each channel, as shown in the screenshots below.

Step 4

Next, add an adjustment layer. Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast) to enhance contrast a bit. Set the settings that are shown in the screenshot below.

As a final touch, add an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels). Move the black slider slightly to the right.

And that is all! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
