In this lesson we will make a car – a zebra.
This lesson consists of two parts: 1) Texture creation, 2) Sorcery over the machine.
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1. Let’s start by opening the image in Photoshop, which we will modify (in our case it is a car) and the texture that we will apply. The author used a photo of a zebra.

Step 2. When creating textures, the author advises to use high-resolution photos, as in the process of work you will often have to transform (deform) the image, and this affects the quality.
Step 3. Now let’s figure out which “plot” of zebra is right for us. It should be about the same in size duplicate details. Using the tool “Rectangle” (Rectangle) Select this area and copy to a new layer.
Step 4. Leave only the active layer visible. Take the tool Lasso and select a part of the texture, avoiding unnecessary details (in the author’s lesson these are zebra legs) Copy to a new layer (Ctrl + J).
Again, leave only the active layer visible using the tool.free transformation (Ctrl + T) transform the layer as shown below.
Step 5. Using the “Crop, frame the document so that the texture takes the shape of a rectangle.
Step 6. At the same stage, you can apply layer correction, as well as filter Sharp – Unsharp mask. When you are satisfied with the result, save the document with the texture to use it if necessary.
Now we can proceed to the second, creative, part of the lesson.
Step 7. Create a new document, let’s call Auto-Zebra, and open our image (car) in it. Be sure to duplicate the layer with the original image (take it as a rule). Drag the texture layer to the new document and place it on top of the Auto layer.
Step 8. If you need to proportionally increase the texture or its area, use the tool “Stamp.
Step 9. Next important step: if you want to create a realistic picture, use the selection tools. “Polygonal Lasso “,”Magic wand “ to achieve accuracy in the allocation of individual parts of the car. This stage of work will be very painstaking, because when you highlight you have to exclude many small details, for example, the handle of a car.
Using , Try different tolerance options. Save the selected areas often, this will help you with further work.
Step 10. As a result, you should have several saved selected objects.
After you have selected all the required areas of AUTO, it’s time to use texture mapping with the tool. “Stamp in turn on each selected area. And we start with the side of the car.
Brush for the stamp, choose a soft medium size.
Step 11. Do not forget to keep the original texture in sight, so as not to disturb the sequence of the pattern. After (or in the process of working) how you have made a texture mapping, experiment with blending modes: Normal, Multiply/Multiplication, Lighten/ Replacement light, Overlay/ Overlay and opacity until you are satisfied with the result.
Step 12. Now let’s do the car hood. Since the hood, as well as some parts of the car, lie in a different plane. Change the direction of the plane in the texture. (Edit – Transform – Perspective, Scale, Distort/ Editing – Transformation – Perspective, scaling, distortion). Make the texture parallel to the bonnet plane.
Step 13. Try to achieve the exact sequence in the texture pattern.
When applying a texture to the hood of the car, repeat Steps 9, 10, 11. Finish editing the photo when you are satisfied with the result.
