Composition in Photoshop consists of 1/3 of technology and 2/3 of imagination. In the example below, I created a dark and mysterious scene with a young girl frozen in a terrifying storm. Here is how I created it:

As you can see, the final result is a combination of several layers mixed with each other by subject and color correction. Creating a scene’s mood by finely adjusting the color balance using adjustment layers combines images together into a single story. A simple overlay of the layers on each other will not give the same effect and will be unconvincing for your audience. It all starts with an idea. In this case, the creation of a theme of sinister beauty.
Your first commercial order would be to view the stock archives (for example, sites with images) in order to find images that you conceived yourself, but in the process you will, of course, adapt your idea to the available images. In this lesson, follow my examples, which I give to you so that you understand how these images combine with each other.
Materials for the lesson:
Step 1. We will start with this old house, located in a pleasant environment. The sky is not as frightening as it should be, so we’ll get rid of it with any tool at your discretion, preferably a tool. Pen (Pen). Take time to carefully cut out all unnecessary pixels. Even the smallest flaws should be eliminated. Although in this lesson you can skip this step and freely use ready-made psd files.

Step 2. Our background is now ready to add a sky, the image of which will not be a problem. Insert your clouds and place them as you see fit. The clouds you choose will play a huge role in creating the atmosphere.
Step 3. Our heroine was created by a talented angelcurioso photographer and was taken from the DeviantArt website in the photo section. Again, we need to spend some time to carefully separate it from the background with the tool. Pen (Pen). When done, place it above the background layers.
Step 4. Then we add some details to give depth to our composition: grass to the fore and light snow. Grass or foliage is easy to find, but very difficult to cut. However, as soon as you succeed, you can use it to create future projects. Snow in reality – the frame from my project in After Effects, was created using a plugin. But it can also be recreated with the tool Brush (Brush) and various meanings opacity (opacity).
Step 5. Place these layers above the girl’s layer. Add a GaussianBlur (Blurry according to Gauss) (~ 2.5) to the grass to give a focus effect. Now you have an element suitable for the foreground, which does not stand out from the big picture. Since the snow is located on a black background, change blendingmode (blending mode) this layer on Screen (Lightening).
Step 6. Layer installation completed. It’s time to move to the functional part: color correction. We will use adjustment layers to adjust the levels and color balance.
Step 7. Start by adding adjustment layerChannel Mixer. This step is done by eye. Playing with individual channels, I aligned all the colors. The result should not be too saturated, ready for further colorization.
Step 8. Finally we use adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to give mood. Again, this step mainly relies on playing with the settings and adjusting the red, green and blue channels to get the desired effect. As you can see below, I, first of all, turned off the blue and added more red in order to give more warmth to the overall atmosphere. These settings are set entirely at your discretion, and depend on the photo you use. You can download the settings that I used below.
Since these adjustment layers are located on separate layers, you can safely go back and experiment with your composition. As a final touch, adding a light vignette will be very useful.
