In this lesson we will work on the processing of the wedding photo. Today we will focus on working with Smart objects (Smart Object). Agree that the works created without the use of smart objects do not visually differ from the works created using smart objects. Nevertheless, I think this lesson will show you a lot of new and useful things, perhaps for someone the techniques shown will be new!
Select a wedding photo and open the image in Photoshop.
Let’s transform a photo into a smart object. In the settings of my version of Photoshop, all new objects are automatically added as smart objects. If your program is configured differently, then there is no problem in converting the layer in with the March object. To do this, simply right-click on the layer and select Convert to smart object (Convert to Smart Object).
As you can see, no changes visually occurred. But in the lower right corner of the layer icon, a small smart object icon appeared, and the layer was automatically renamed from “Background” to “Layer 0”.
Duplicate the “Layer 0” layer. To quickly create a copy of a layer, press the key combination Ctrl + J. You now have two layers, which are smart objects.
Stand on the copy layer. Activate the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee tool (M)). Create a square selection in the photo in the upper right corner.
Without removing the selection, click on the “Add layer mask“(” Add layer mask “).
Now, let’s modify the layer to which we applied the layer mask.
First of all, click on the layer thumbnail to make it active. Then click on the “clip” icon, which is located between the layer thumbnail and the layer mask. This action will disable the link between the layer and its mask. As a result: we can move the image itself, while the layer mask will remain static.
Let’s check it out on an exercise. Activate the function Free transform (Free Transform). Press and hold Shift, and drag one of the corner points inward to reduce the size of the photo. Adjust the size of the photo so that the bride’s face is completely in the square. Press key Enter in order to apply the changes.
Repeat steps 3-5 two more times and place duplicates evenly along the right side. Consider these actions in more detail:
- Duplicate the original smart object layer (Ctrl + J).
- Create a square selection. Add an add layer mask to the new copy layer.
- When placing squares, focus on the first square. Post new areas as shown below.
- Use Free transformation (Free Transform), in order to change the photo and place in the square the necessary part of the image.
Add accents. For this, we will use Layer styles (Layer Styles).
To go to the menu Layer style (Layer Styles), double-click on one of the layers with the image (except for the “Layer 0” layer). In this example, we will use such styles as: Shadow (Drop Shadow), Internal glow (Inner Glow) and Stroke (Stroke). In the images below, you can review the settings that I applied.
To the remaining two squares, we will also add layer styles that we applied earlier. In order to quickly copy an existing layer style you need, hold down the key Alt, and without releasing it, click on the icon-style icon layer “fx“. Drag this icon onto the layers to which you want to add a layer style.
Stand on the Layer 0 layer. Then click on the corresponding icon at the bottom of the panel to add an adjustment layer. Levels (Adjustments> Levels). Using n
Olzunki, make the main photo a little lighter.
Also, to the layer “Layer 0”, we add Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter > Blur> Gaussian Blur). Set the blur radius to 3px. I draw your attention to the fact that due to the fact that we work with a smart object, we can always additionally correct the effect of the filter on the main image. If you look at the layers panel, you will see that your filter is displayed as a smart filter under the corresponding “Layer 0” layer.
Add the final items. Activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangle tool), hotkey for this tool – “U“. Then press the key on the keyboard “D“, and then “X“. This sequence will help you set the foreground and background color to black and white, and then set the foreground color to white. On the new layer, draw a large white rectangle (under the “Levels” adjustment layer).
Double-click on the rectangle layer to go to the menu. Layer style (Layer Styles). Switch to Stroke (Stroke). Set the stroke size to 2 pixels., The stroke color is black. Press the button OK, to add a style and close the Layer Style dialog box.Fill (Fill) layer with a white rectangle, you need to lower to 30%.
Decorate the rectangle with text. To do this, on the toolbar, activate Horizontal text (Type tool (T)). Choose any type and font size you like and write a congratulatory inscription or a wish. In my example, the font used was called “Edwardian” and the font size was 41 pt.
To adjust the line spacing and other font settings, I recommend that you use Window> Symbols (Window> Character).
Now the most interesting moment! Save your work in PSD format. You can give the name to this file “Wedding Template”. Due to the fact that we worked with smart objects, any element of the resulting template can be quickly replaced by another!
It is very convenient. Now, if we have several photos for which we want to apply a similar effect, we do not need to do everything again – just go to the smart object from the template and replace it with a new image! To do this, right-click on the layer and in the submenu find the item “Replace content»(Smart Objects> Replace Contents).
Having added a new photo, do not forget about the possibility to correct the template.
You can return to the smart filter. Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) and reduce or increase the value of this parameter. You can also change the size of the photo (main and in squares) using the function Free transformation (Free Transform).
This lesson is over! I hope you need a new template for processing family photos!
