Insidious feather – 2

We continue to study the insidious pen. Today we will draw letters in colors.

At the end of the lesson should be the following:

Step 1

First, create a brush in the form of a flower.
To do this, open the picture that contains the desired flower.

I chose the left flower. Now you need to select it. If you know how to use selection tools – fine, but our goal is to master the pen. Therefore, we will work with a pen. Increase flower tool  zoom (scale). Turn on the tool pen, on the panel Options turn on mode circuit.

Look at the contour of the flower and find the points at which the contour will change dramatically. Look, I marked them with dots:

At these points we will CLICK the tool pen, thereby creating a contour, which after the change will turn into a selection.

Step 2

So, turn on the pen, and start clicking at some target point.

Go around the whole flower with clicks, and again get to the first point (a small circle will appear near the pen icon), thus we will close the contour. For clarity, I tint contour:

Your outline will be tinted with a dark gray color.

Step 3

Turn on the tool zoom (scale) and enlarge the left part of the flower (just circle the desired area with a magnifying glass)

It will turn out like this:

Step 4
Now you need to correct the contour. Turn on the white arrow and click on the created contour, the nodes will appear.

The whole contour at the moment is a BROADBAND line consisting of DIRECT segments, and we need a smooth line, and even a curved line. So, consider the first segment. Right-click (Right Mouse Button) approximately in the middle of the segment, the Context menu appears. In it, LMB (Left Mouse Button) select the first command – Add Anchor Point (Add anchor point or Add anchor node).

A new SMOOTH node will appear. A white arrow will drag the new node to the edge of the contour and place it in the right place. Then go to the next segment and repeat the actions: click on the PCM segment, select the command – Add a binding node. And again we drag to a new place.

Sometimes it is impossible to repeat the edge with the desired line, then you can correct the balancing points (antennae with dots on the edges), move them until the desired arc shape appears. And again:

To zoom in and out, you can use the Ctrl + and Ctrl – (+ and – keys on the numeric keypad). If the segment turned out to be long, then you can add several points. To move around the work area, you can hold the key. space (included “arm“), And while holding the key, drag the LMB area. If a node is not needed, right-click on it, select the command DeleteAnchor Point (Remove anchor point or Remove anchor node). After all the manipulations should get something like this:

Step 5

Click the White arrow inside the created contour, select the command Make Selection (Make a selection or Create a selection)

A window will appear asking for feathering. Feathering is responsible for the softness of the selection edge (the edge will be fuzzy), the larger it is, the blurring the edge will be, the smaller – the smoother the edge will be. If the feathering is zero – get the effect of “scissors”, that is, as if the flower was cut out with scissors – the edges will be very smooth. In our case, the flower will definitely have a “soft” edge. Enough shading in 2 pixels. And in the future you will determine the feathering yourself.

After clicking on ok, a selection will appear.

Step 6

Slightly compress the selection: Select – Modify – Contract (Selection – Modification – Compress) set 1 pixel, press ok. This will give us the opportunity to remove the dark edge, which may remain as a result of inaccurate contour construction.

Step 7

Turn on any selection tool, right-click within the selected area, select the command Layer via Copy (Layer through copy)

The result is a layer with a flower. Select the bottom layer.

Step 8

Set the working color to blue and press Alt + Delete, the bottom layer will be painted blue. (The color here is not necessarily blue, just to be different from our flower)

Step 9

Turn on the eraser, set the settings:

Pay attention to the parameter Opacity (transparency) = 10%. Go to the layer with the flower (Layer 1). With this eraser, go through the flower, without touching the edges and the heart of the flower. Since you will work with an eraser, then a part of the image will be deleted, therefore, where the eraser will “run”, the pixels of the lower layer (blue) will appear through. The figure below shows the areas that need to be processed.

Step 10
Change the Opacity parameter of the eraser to 30% and process the edges of the flower.

Step 11

Holding the key Ctrl,  in the layers palette click on the icon of the layer with the flower – you will load the selection.

Step 12

Now define the brush:
EditDefine Brush Preset (Edit – Define brush), press ok.

Step 13

Now the file with the flower can be closed without saving so as not to spoil the picture with flowers.

Create a new document 500×500, any background. Add a new blank layer.

Step 14

Turn on the tool pen, mode circuit. (see step 1) Draw the letter D. Scheme below:

Step 15

Turn on the black arrow and drag the outline to the center of the canvas.

Fill the bottom layer with black (see step 8), go to the top one.

Step 16

Adjust the brush

For a more precise setting, open the brush palette. Window – Brushes  (Window – Brushes). Set the following settings:

Brush Tip shape (Customize brush shape)
Diameter (Diameter) 50 px
Angle (Angle) 0 px
Spacing  (Interval) 100%

Set the working color – red.

Step 17

Turn on the black arrow (see step 15), right click on our letter D and select the command Stroke Patch (Circle the way).

A window will appear Stroke Patch  (Circle path), select a brush as the stroke tool, click ok.

It will turn out like this:

Step 18

Add a new layer (see step 13)
Select tool again brush and open the palette Brushes (see Step 16)
Brush Tip Shape (Customize brush shape)
Diameter (Diameter) 25 px
Angle (Angle) 180 px
Spacing  (Interval) 150%
Color can be any, I took pink.
Repeat step 17. It turns out like this:

Step 19

Add a new layer again (see step 13)
Choose a tool brush and open the palette Brushes (see step 16)
Brush Tip Shape (Customize brush shape)
Diameter (Diameter) 15 px
Angle (Angle) 45 px
Spacing  (Interval) 200%

Again, the color can be any, I took white.
Repeat step 17three times. Right-click on the contour again and select the command Delete Patch (Delete Path).

Step 20

Well, if desired, you can embellish a letter – change the layer blending mode (Mode – Mode in the layers palette), add effects (Layer – Layer Style – Layer Style), change the shade (ImageHue / Saturation (Ctrl + U) – color tone / saturation), etc.

I hope this knowledge will be useful to you for other purposes.
Good luck!
