Create a design for the menu in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a simple and stylish drop-down menu using Photoshop.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and press Ctrl + N to create a new document with the parameters shown below in the screenshot. Activate the grid View – Show – Grid (View – Show – Grid) and Snap to Grid View – Snap to – Grid (View – Attach to – Grid). At the moment we need a grid with 5 px cells.

Move on Edit – Preferences – Guides, Grid and Slices (Editing – Settings – Guides, mesh and fragments) and find the parameters of the Grid (Grid). For Gridline every (Lines every) enter 5, and for Subdivision (Internal division by) – 1. Also set the grid color to # a7a7a7. When finished, click OK.

The grid helps a lot in work, I advise you not to neglect it. Also open the info panel Window – Info (Window – Information).

Step 2

Set the foreground color to # 3f8ecf, take Rounded rectangle tool (Rounded rectangle) (U) and assign its radius to 20 px. Create a 160 x 40 px rectangle and duplicate it (Ctrl + J). Select a duplicate and change its color to white. Activate Rectangle tool (Rectangle) (U), press the button Intersect shape areas (Area of ​​intersection of figures) on the top panel and draw a square measuring 40 x 40 px, as shown in the third screenshot. Move to the layers panel and double click on the layer with the white rectangle to open the Layer Style window.

Apply Inner Glow (Internal luminescence) Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay) and Stroke (Stroke) with the settings as in the screenshot below.

Step 3

Select the blue rectangle and duplicate it again (Ctrl + J). Select the duplicate, change its color to white and activate Rectangle tool (Rectangle) (U). We press the button Intersect shape areas (The intersection of the figures) on the top panel and draw a rectangle with a size of 120 x 40 px, as shown below.

Go to the layers panel, right-click on the layer with the white rectangle created in the previous step, and select Copy Layer Style (Copy layer style). Go to the white rectangle that we created in this step, right-click on it and select Paste Layer Style (Paste the layer style).

Step 4

Take Type tool(Text) (T) and write the text on the button (color # a1d8ff). Then open the window Layer style (Layer style) and apply layer styles to the text as shown below.

Step 5

We return to the blue rectangle that we created in the second step. Open up Layer Style window (Layer style) and apply layer style Drop shadow (Shadow). Duplicate this rectangle (Ctrl + J), select the copy, open the window Layer style (Layer style) and edit the layer style as shown below. Then select all the currently created rectangles and group them (Ctrl + G). So the button will look when the drop-down menu is hidden. The final touches we will add in the final step.

Step 6

Move to the layers panel, right-click on the created group and select Duplicate group (Duplicate group). Select a copy of the group and drop it just below the original, as shown in the screenshot.

Step 7

Now focus on the duplicate group. First, correct the text. Change its color to # b4b4b4, then right-click on the layer and select Clear layer style (Clear layer style). Open the window Layer style (Layer style) and add a layer style to the text. Drop shadow (Shadow).

Next we need to edit the rectangle. Change its color to # f5f5f5 and delete layer styles. Then open the window Layer style (Layer Style) and apply new layer styles as shown below.

Step 8

Set the foreground color to # f5f5f5, take Rounded rectangle tool (Rounded rectangle) (U) and assign its radius to 20 px. Create a 160 x 35 px rectangle and place it under the button, as shown in Figure 1. Then duplicate it (Ctrl + J) and change the copy color to white. Activate Rectangle tool (Rectangle) (U), click on the button Intersect shape areas (Area of ​​intersection of the figures) on the top panel and draw a rectangle measuring 40 x 35 px, as shown in Figure 2.

Go to the layers panel and reduce Fill (Fill) of this layer to 0%. Then open the window Layer style (Layer style) and apply layer style Inner shadow (Inner shadow).

Step 9

Activate the rounded rectangle we created at the beginning of the previous step and duplicate it (Ctrl + J). Activate the copy and move it higher on the layers panel (Shift + Ctrl +]). Reduce the Fill to 0%, open the Layer Style window and apply layer styles.

Step 10

Activate the second rectangle created in the eighth step and duplicate it (Ctrl + J). Move the copy above (Shift + Ctrl +]), then copy the layer styles from the previous step and paste them into this rectangle.

Next, apply the layer style to the first rectangle from the eighth step. Drop shadow (Shadow).

Step 11

Now focus on the right side of the button created in the previous step. Set the foreground color to #ebebeb, take Rectangle tool (Rectangle) (U) and create a 10 x 5 px rectangle, as shown below.

Next, click the button Add to shape area (Add to the shape area) and immediately above the previous one draw a new rectangle 5 × 10 px in size, as shown in Figure 2. Make sure that the created layer is active, and press Ctrl + T. Rotate the arrow by -45 degrees and press Enter.

Go to the layers panel, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer thumbnail with the rectangle created in the previous step. As a result, a selection should appear around the shape. Without removing the selection, we take Move Tool (Move) (V) and check that the layer with the created arrow is still active.

Move to the top panel and click the buttons. Align vertical centers (Alignment centers vertically) and Align horizontal centers (Align the centers vertically), as shown in the fifth figure. Open up Layer style (Layer style) and apply layer styles for the arrow.

Step 12

Take Type tool (Text) (T) and write any word on the button, as shown below (color # b4b4b4). Then apply a layer style to the text. Drop shadow (Shadow). Select the text layer and all the layers created in the last four steps, and group them (Ctrl + G).

Step 13

Four times we duplicate the group created in the previous step. Place the copies, as shown in the figure below, and change the text on each button.

Step 14

Now we will finish the Tutorials submenu. Activate the layer with the arrow in the group with the Tutorials button and open the window Layer style (Layer style). Apply layer styles.

Step 15

Activate the text layer of the Tutorials and change its color to # 2c95dd. Also activate a gray rounded rectangle under the text and apply a layer style to it. Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay).

Step 16

For the final step, we need to change the grid parameters. Move on Edit – Preferences – Guides, Grid Slices (Edit – Settings – Guides, Grid, and Fragments) and parameter Gridline every (Lines through every) set to 1. Set the foreground color to # a1d8ff, take Rectangle tool (Rectangle) (U) and create a 6 x 6 px square.

Then activate Direct selection tool (Partial selection) (A), grab the lower right nodule of the square and pull it towards the center by 3 px. After that, remove the left nodule and get a triangle.

Open the window Layer style (Layer style) and apply layer styles to the triangle.

Step 17

Duplicate the triangle from the previous step (Ctrl + J). Activate the copy, move it to the group created in step five and place it on the first button.
