Create a retro design in Photoshop

You will need Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or higher and approximately one and a half hours of time.

This is what we should end up with:

Materials for the lesson:

Parchment texture

Parchment Texture 2

The rays

Camera

Radio

Car

1. Let’s start with the background. Open the grunge parchment texture and click Ctrl + Alt + I and change the size to 1024×768.

2. Now we have to “singe” the sides of our parchment. Make a Foreground color (Colour front plan) black. Using the tool Gradient (Gradient) and preset Foreground color to transparent (foreground color to transparent), work alternately with the edges of the parchment, as shown in the figure. Notice that each gradient creates a separate layer. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Soft Light (Soft Light) and Opacity at 100%.

3. Add two more gradients as shown in the figure. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Soft Light (Soft Light) and Opacity by 30%.

4. We also need to churn the upper edges. Add two more gradients as shown. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Soft Light (Soft Light) and Opacity at 100%.

Work on content

1. Now we will create a platform for blocks with text, polls and other content. For this we use another grunge-style parchment texture.

2. Paste this “piece of parchment” into our future layout and name it “Content Area”.

Work on the “cap”

1. Insert a picture with these black rays into the layout and place the layer with these rays behind the Content Area layer.

2. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Overlay and Opacity by 30%.

3. Using Rectangular Marquee tool (Rectangular area), select the upper part of the Content Area, reflect it horizontally and place it on top, as shown in the figure.

4. Insert a retro car into the layout and place it in the upper right corner.

5. Now we need to change the color scheme of the car so that it fits under the background .. Create another layer on top and hold down Ctrl +Alt +G. Take a brush and paint over the car on a new layer using color #c69c6d. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Color and Opacity by 30%.

6. As you can see, our car does not have a windshield. Let’s “glaze” it! Create a new layer and place it under the machine layer. Using Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal lasso), to create a selection, as shown in the figure. Make a Foreground color (foreground color) white. Using the tool Gradient (Gradient) and preset Foreground color to transparent (foreground color to transparent), Fill the selected area with a gradient from left to right.

Take a soft brush with a diameter of 27 px. Draw shadows and make them blurry using Gassian Blur (Gaussian Blur).

Create a caption and navigation bar

1. In this layout, navigation points will consist only of labels. All you need to do is write the menu items using the appropriate tool. Stylize as you like. I used the Jikharev font.

2. Now let’s add an inscription in the header – the title and subtitle. Stylize the inscription as you like.

Select the top half of the text like this. as it shown on the picture. Create another layer on top of the text layer. Pinch Ctrl + Alt + G. Press D on the keyboard to change the colors in the toolbar to standard black and white. Now fill the selection with a gradient on the new layer from top to bottom. Now hold down Ctrl + I, to invert the selection. Fill the bottom of the text in the same way, from top to bottom.

3. Now we need to add shadows to the label. Apply to layer Drop Shadow with the following settings:
Blend Mode (Blend Mode): Multiply (Multiply)
Opacity (Opacity): 75%
Distance (Offset): 0
Angle (Angle): 90
Spread (Spread): 7
Size: 49

4. Now add a subtitle under the heading (logical, right?).

5. It may be cooler if we add to the header not only a shadow, but also a small “backlight” at the back. Create a new layer under the heading layer. Using Elliptical Marquee tool (Oval area) create small oval highlighting for headline. Pinch Ctrl + Backspace, to fill the selection with white. Install Layers blend mode (Layer blend mode) on Overlay and Opacity by 80%. Do the same with the menu items. This is what should happen in the end:

Add content

1. Now add copyright at the very bottom of our template. Everything is simple – using a well-known tool, add the necessary text.

2. You can also add your personal copyright in the lower right corner. I used these settings for the text:

3. It’s time to add the latest news sidebar. Use the settings for the text as shown below:

4. Maybe write content for our sidebar in Latin? Something like the famous fish Lorem Ipsum.

5. Create a sidebar with a survey. Write the title yourself, based on the second paragraph.

6. We add examples of a question and variants of the answer to it. Using Elliptical Marquee tool (Oval area), draw markers for answer choices.

7. Using Rectangular marquee tool (Rectangular area), draw a button and add the inscription “VOTE” on it.

8. Now add a header for the main content. Text settings are visible in the picture below:

9. Add a few paragraphs of text:

10. Make room for the illustration and add it to the paragraph:

11. Based on the previous steps, create the “Resent Articles” block below.

12. The final touch – add illustrations in the last block:

Our work is finished. You can be proud that they themselves have made such beauty!
