Create Photoshop New Year’s design for the site

In this lesson we will create with you a beautiful New Year website design.

Materials for the lesson:

Set of brushes

Cloudy sky

House

Snow

Bow

Icon

New Year’s gift

Step 1. Create a new document (Ctrl + N) sized 1100px by 1150px.
Create a new layer name it “Background”, fill the document with the color # be0000.

Step 2. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Header Gradient” and drag Linear gradient (Linear Gradient) from the top of the document down, color from # 930000 to transparent. This should add a certain depth to your header, darkening the top of the canvas.

Step 3. Now create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “White Gradient”. Choose a tool Radial gradient (Radial Gradient) and drag the gradient from the top to the center of the canvas (color from white to transparent).
Then change, Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay) and lower the Opacity to 30%.

Step 4. Next we need the brushes of the fractal line. The author can not find the source of the brushes that he used, however, he recommends a set of brushes from the archive.
Apply Brushes (Brush), on a new layer called “Lines”.
Be sure to use 30% Opacity Brushes (white) (although you can adjust the opacity as needed). And also go Filter-> Sharpness-> Sharpness (Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen) in order to clarify the details of our lines.

Step 5. Now create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Content”.
Using tools Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tooi) and Fill (Paintbucket Tool) create a white rectangle in the upper center of the canvas. The vertical edges of the rectangle should be set to 100px and 1000px, and the top / bottom edges should be set to 30px and 800px (for your convenience, you can draw guides, you can call them using the key combination (Ctrl + R)).

Step 6. Add a layer style (Add a layer style) Stroke:
Size: 10px
Opacity: 6%
Color (Color): Black

Upload a photo, Cloudy sky.
Paste it in the upper right corner of the white content area.
Then use Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tooi) to crop it, and reduce the Opacity of the layer to 70%:

Step 8. Now go to the menu Layer-> Layer- Mask-> Show All (Layer-> Apply layer mask-> Reveal all). Use a soft black Brush to hide the edges of the mask, a photo of a cloudy sky, until you are happy with how it looks. Do not worry about the bottom edge of the photo, as it will be covered in the final result with other photos.

Step 9. Now we will apply a couple of corrective layers for our photo of the sky. In order for each adjustment layer to be applied only to this layer, and not to our entire document, we will have to, apply Layer–> Create Clipping Mask (Layer-> Apply clipping mask) for each adjustment layer.
Move on Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Hue / Saturation (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue / Saturation) (settings below):
Hue: 0
Saturation: +10
Brightness (Lightness): +30

Then, Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer -> Color Balance)
Light (Highlights): -15 / 0/0
Mid Tones (Midtones): 0/0/0
Shadows: 0 / +5 / -20

Step 10. Upload photos of the house with Christmas lights.
Add a layer mask (Add layer mask) and hide the edges of the photo on the mask so that only the house remains:

Step 11. Move on Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Hue / Saturation (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue / Saturation)
Do not forget to add Clipping Mask (Clipping mask), as these layers should add an effect, only for your house layer:
Hue: 0
Saturation: +15
Brightness (Lightness): 0

Then, Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer -> Color Balance)
Light (Highlights): +5 / 0 / -30
Mid Tones (Midtones): -10 / -5 / -30
Shadows: +10 / 0 / -40

Step 12. Load a photo of the snow and paste it into the document.
Trim the image so that you only have a piece of snow.

Step 13. Change the size of the image, and also on the layer mask (layer mask), hide the edges using a soft black Brush (Brush).
Name this layer “Snow”.

Step 14. Now apply a Hue / Saturation adjustment layer and a Levels adjustment layer (add a Clipping mask for both layers):
Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation)
Hue: 0
Saturation: -60
Brightness (Lightness): 0
Levels
25 / 1.16 / 238

Step 15. Now repeat this technique to create other areas of snow until you get a snowy landscape in front of your house:

Step 16. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called Ribbon.
Use the tool Pen (Pen tool) to create a ribbon covering the top of the content area. Fill this area with # eab631 (gold).

Step 17. Add a layer style (Add a layer style) for the ribbon.
Shadow (Drop Shadow):
Opacity: 26%
Offset (Distance): 1px
Spread: 0%
Size (Size): 2px

Inner Shadow:
Opacity: 24%
Offset (Distance): 1px
Coagulation (Choke): 0%
Size (Size): 2px

Step 18. Now ctrl + click on your ribbon layer in the layers palette.
This will create a selection of your tape. When the selection is still active, create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Ribbon Shadow”. Use soft black Brush (Brush) to paint over certain areas of the ribbon and make a shadow.

Then create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Tape Glare”. Then use soft white Brush (Brush) to paint over in other places of your ribbon.

On the layer “Shadow Ribbon”, change Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Multiplication (Multiply) and lower the Opacity to 36%.
On the “Ribbon Flare” layer, just change Blend mode (Blend Mode) layer on Overlap (Overlay).

Step 19. Upload a photo of a bow.
Cut it using any method, and then paste it onto the edge of your tape.

Add a layer style (Add a layer style) Shadow (Drop Shadow):
Opacity: 22%
Offset (Distance): 1px
Spread: 0%
Size (Size): 5px

Step 20. Add an adjustment layer Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance) for a bow. Don’t forget to add a clipping mask.
Light (Highlights): -9 / +5 / -9
Midtones: +12 / +1 / -11
Shadows: +9 / -6 / -28

This will make your bow more saturated and golden.
Now repeat these steps to add another bow on the other side of your ribbon:

Step 21 Now create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Clarification / Shading Ribbon”.
Let’s go to Edit-> Run Fill (Edit-> Fill) and fill the layer with 50% gray (50% gray) color. Then change the blend mode (blend mode) of this layer to Overlap (Overlay). This will hide your gray fill.

Use soft black Brush (Brush) to make a shadow on the ribbon under the bow, and then a soft white Brush (Brush) to lighten up a little over the bow.

In the image below you can see how the images look with the Normal (Normal) Blend Mode (Blend Mode) and the Blend Mode (Blend Mode) Overlap (Overlay).

Step 22 Download this icon.
Paste it in the upper right corner of your ribbon.
We need to make it a different color in order for it to better fit our design. Move on Image-> Correction-> Hue / Saturation (Image-> Adjustments-> Hue / Saturation). Reduce the Hue to -90 to make your icon red.

Step 23 Download this New Year’s gift icon.
Paste it to the top left of your content. This will be your logo icon.

Step 24 Now write a text for your logo. (Settings below).
Font Face: Mido
Size (Size): 36px
Color: # b40000
Tracking (Kerning): -50

Step 25. Choose a tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shape Tool) (find the Button on the tab) and start creating a left-aligned menu.
Your menu will consist of a series of rounded rectangles, each of which will have a layer style added. Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay): (colors from # d40000 to # 940000).

Step 26. Now use the tool Line (Line Tool) to create a series of white 1px dividing lines, between each menu button. Then merge all the lines into one layer (hold down the Ctrl key, select them in the layers palette and press the key combination Ctrl + E) and change the Blend Mode of this layer to Overlap (Overlay).

Step 27. Now using the tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) create an arrow on the right side of the top menu button.
Fill this selection in red, this will make the icon as the active menu item.

Step 28. Now go to the upper left corner of the menu, and also using any selection tool and Fill (Paintbucket Tool) create a menu wrap effect:

Step 29. Write the menu text.
Font settings:
Font Face: Mido
Size (Size): 16px
Color (White): White
Tracking (Kerning): -50

Step 30. Then create an arrow next to your “Home” menu item. It will indicate the “active” menu item.
Add a layer style (Add a layer style) for the arrow.
Shadow (Drop Shadow):
Black colour
Opacity: 34%
Offset (Distance): 1px
Spread: 0%
Size (Size): 2px

External glow (Outer Glow):
Blend Mode (Blend Mode): Overlay
Opacity: 25%
Color (White): White
Spread: 25%
Size (Size): 29px

Step 31. Now type the greeting text to the right of your menu.

Step 32 Next tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool), create a rectangle (radius 5 pixels), we will have it as a Details button, under our greeting text.
Add a layer style (Add a layer style) for the button.

Inner Shadow:
Color (Color): Black
Opacity: 50%
Offset (Distance): 1px
Coagulation (Choke): 0%
Size (Size): 0px

Gradient Overlay (Gradient Overlay):
Opacity: 100%
Gradient: Colors from # 8b8b8b to # 4e4d4d.

Step 33 Now create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) called “Gray Zone”.
Create a gray rectangle using the tool. Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) (color # e8e8e8) under the greeting. Add a layer style (Add a layer style)
Inner Shadow:
Color (Color): Black
Angle: 90 degrees
Offset (Distance): 1px
Coagulation (Choke): 0%
Size (Size): 0px

Step 34 Using the tool Line (Line Tool) create a thin dividing line at the top of your gray area.
Create the top line (1 pixel thick, color #cbcbcb) and 1px white line below it.
This will add the volume of your gray area:

Step 36 Insert a few Christmas images in our gray area:

Step 36 Write some text under each photo, and also add a simple icon with an arrow next to each text:

Step 37. Create a new layer called “Footer”. Spend Radial gradient ( Radial Gradient) at the bottom center of your document. (From white to transparent).
Then change, Blend mode (Blend Mode) of this layer on Overlap (Overlay) and lower the Opacity to 60%.

Step 38 Finally, to finish our layout, add text and icons at the bottom of our layout.
