Draw a compass icon in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create shapes and use different layer styles to create the desired effects.

Final result:

Step 1. Create a new document by selecting File-> New (File-> New) or by pressing the key combination Ctrl + Shift + N. For this lesson, it is better to use a large document of size (1300 x 1000), but you can choose any size.

Step 2. Create a new layer Layer-> New – From Background (Layer> New> Background from Layer) and call it “Background”.

Step 3. Double-click the “Background” layer to add the following layer styles (add a layer style) or use Layer> Layer Style> Blending Options (Layers> Layer Style> Blending Options).

Step 4. When you’re done adding layer styles to the “Background”, you should have a nice looking gradient with a little noise.

Step 5. Now it’s time to start working on the icon. Activate the tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shapes Tools) and in the shape set select Thin round frame (Circle Thin Frame tool).

Step 6. After you have chosen Thin round frame (Circle Thin Frame tool), click and drag the mouse (while holding the Shift key) to make a small circle. It is not necessary to give a name to this layer, but the author called it “Outer Ring”. Double click on this layer to Add layer styles (Add a layer style):

Step 7. Now that you have added some interesting effects to your ring, click A new style (Layer Styles). This will save this effect, so that if you need it again, you do not have to add styles again. You can name this effect as you wish, just make sure the checkbox Enable Layer Effects is checked, otherwise the effects will not be included in the style.

Step 8. Now we duplicate the “Outer Ring” layer, and call it “Inner Ring”, then reduce it to fit into the previous layer. Add layer styles to a layer (Add a layer style), and then save it as a new style, just like in the previous step.

Step 9. This is what should happen:

Step 10. Next, using the tool Ellipse (Ellipse tool), create a circle. Then add a layer style (Add a layer style):

Step 11. Your result should look something like this:

Step 12. Now with the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) and SHIFT, let’s make a big circle. Name this layer “outer”. Remember the first layer style we made for the outer ring? For a big circle, we will use it again. To access the Layer Style and use it for this layer, make sure that you have a layer with a large circle selected, and then go to Window-> Styles (Window> Styles). The style bar should open, scroll down and select the layer style effect you made earlier.

Step 13. Duplicate the outer layer and reduce it. Then add to it the second layer style effect we made. Now you should have something like this:

Step 14. Create a new ellipse tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U) and Add a layer style (Add a layer style):

Step 15. To the same layer, add a gradient fill.

Step 16. Now, rename the layer to “Base”. This is what should happen.

Step 17. The next step requires a lot of concentration and patience. Activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) and make a small rectangle, inside the blue part of our icon, fill it with white. Then duplicate the layer and rotate it slightly. Do this until you have a full circle. Then change the blending mode of the layer (Blend Mode) to Overlap (Overlay).

Step 18. Activate the tool Arbitrary shape (Custom Shapes Tools) and select Thin round frame (Circle Thin Frame tool) again to create two circles. Merge both layers in one, and call it “Circles”. Install Fill (Fill) up to 10%.

Step 19. Use the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) to make a circle of the same size as the “Base”. Rename the layer, name it “Inner base“and Add a layer style:

Internal luminescence:

Step 20. Use Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) to make another circle the same size as the “Base”, name it “Inner Base 2” and Add a layer style:

Inner shadow:

Internal luminescence:

Step 21. In this tutorial, the author created a compass icon in Photoshop. You can create your own or find it on the Internet. Change Opacity (Opacity) and Fill (Fill) at 65%, and Layer Blending Mode (Blend Mode) at Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge). Then Add a layer style:

Step 22 Your result should look like this:

Step 23 If you want to add more shine, you can combine several layers with shapes made in the shape of the moon. Then change Fill (Fill) at 65% and add a shadow.

Step 24 We have almost reached the end of the lesson! Now it’s time to create a compass needle shape. Add a layer style (Add a layer style):

Shadow:

Step 25. Then we will make separate forms for each side and part of the needle.

Step 26. Make a small circle in the middle of the needle and Add a layer style:

Step 27. Make another circle inside the previous one and Add a layer style:

Step 28. Here is how it should look.

Final result:

I hope that you have learned a lot about the technique with which you can create interesting things in Photoshop.
