Draw a shield icon in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will draw a radiant shield in Photoshop from scratch. Shields are widely used in online advertisements. They represent a symbol of confidence, reliability, protection. The idea of using a shield is to make positive associations with a product or service among customers or users.

Final result:

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the parameters shown in the screenshot. Save it as “Shield.psd”. In the process of work, it is recommended to save your project. (Ctrl + S), so as not to lose the changes.

Step 2

Choose a tool Polygon (Polygon Tool) (U). On the top panel, set 3 hundred

Ron and draw a black triangle, as shown in the screenshot.

Open the panel Info (Window> Info) (Window> Info). Click on the plus icon (+) and select Pixels (Pixels) as a unit of measurement. On the toolbar, select the triangle layer and the tool Move (Move Tool) (V). After that go to menu Editing> Contour Transform> Edit> Transform Path> Scale.

On the top bar, enter the following widths and heights:

Now you need to position the triangle right in the center of the canvas. To do this, select the triangle and background layer. On the top panel, click on the alignment buttons for vertical and horizontal centers.

Working with vector shapes is very convenient because of the ability to change their shapes with anchor points. Then you will see how we will turn the triangle into a shield using only 3 anchor points.

Step 3

Choose a tool Angle (Convert Point Tool) and hover over the upper left corner of the triangle. The pointer changes to a white arrow, which means that the tool has changed to another – Node selection (Direct Selection Tool) (A). The fact is that the tool Angle (Convert Point Tool) visible only when at least one anchor point is selected. Therefore, first select the left upper point.

Once the point is highlighted, move the cursor over it again and see that it changes to an inverted V. This is the tool pointer. Angle (Convert Point Tool). Click on the anchor point and drag the mouse up to the right. At the anchor point will appear two levers. As you understand, this tool in Photoshop creates curved lines. Levers are needed to guide the lines that form the angle. They can be controlled through points at the ends. After you have created a curved line, switch to the tool. Node selection (Direct Selection Tool) (A). They will be more convenient to use and safer.

Now you should still have the tool selected. Angle (Convert Point Tool). Hold key Alt and pull the lower lever to the right up.

Step 4

Tool Angle (Convert Point Tool) create a bend in the upper right corner of the triangle.

Holding Alt, pull the lower lever left up.

Step 5

Now take up the bottom corner.

Now you can switch to the tool Node selection (Direct Selection Tool) (A), since all corners have been smoothed. With this tool we will continue to change the shape of the shield.

You need to get the following form:

Step 6

Name the layer with the shape “shield outer”. Click on it with the right mouse button and select Rasterize layer (Rasterize Layer). After rasterization, you can no longer change the shape of the figure.

Step 7

Now we will add a few styles that will make the shield shiny and metallic. Double click on the “shield outer” layer and adjust the styles like this:

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Inner bevel, Method – Smooth, Backlight Mode – Lightening, Shadow Mode – Multiplication.

Translator’s note: only the text values of the parameters are translated, since the parameters that have numeric values remain in their places regardless of the program language.

Select contour Ring (Ring):

Contour (Contour): contour Semicircle (Half Round).

Step 8

Now customize the style Inner glow (Inner Glow): Mode – Replacement dark, Method – Soft, Contour – Ring (Ring).

Step 9

The next style is Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay): Mode – Normal, Style – Linear.

Open up Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor). On the gradient color bar, click in the middle to add a new color reference point. As soon as a new point appears and is highlighted, the parameters will become available to you. Colour (Color) and Position (Location). Click on the color of the parameter Colour (Color), to open Color Editor (Color Picker). There you can enter the RGB color code. To remove a color control point, click it and drag the mouse up or down.

Add two control points to the gradient strip.

Step 20

Apply the following styles to the shield core layer:

Inner glow (Inner Glow): Mode – Multiplication.

Gloss (Satin): Mode – Brightening basics.

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

Step 21

The blue part of the shield should reflect the light. Now we will create a highlight on the shield. All layers of reflection will have the word “refl” in the title. Select the “shield core” layer, compress the selection by 15 pixels, create a new refl left mid layer and fill the selection with white.

Step 22

Remove selection (Ctrl + D). Tool Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) create a selection shown in the screenshot.

Step 23

Now you need to select the rest of the left half of the white form. Choose a tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) (L) hold the key Shift and add to the selection what is on the left.

Step 24

Invert selection (Ctrl + Shift + I).

Click Delete, to remove the right half of the white form.

Step 25

Remove selection (Ctrl + D) and apply the filter Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur).

Step 26

You should still be on the “refl left mid” layer. Add a mask to it.

The white color of the mask means that the contents of the layer are fully visible. The black color on the mask hides the areas of the layer. Now we will create a smooth transition between the blue shield and the white flare.

Choose a soft brush with 50% opacity, make sure the mask is active and start painting over the white area from the left edge. To return the white fill, change the color on the brush to white. The mask does not affect the pixels of the layer, so it belongs to the category of harmless tools of Photoshop.

Step 27

Choose a tool Move (Move Tool) (V). Then lower the layer opacity to 24%.

Step 28

Create a new “refl top” layer. On it we will create another highlight in the same way as the first.

Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a value of 3 pixels.

Add a mask and use a soft brush to erase part of the fill.

Step 29

Select the “shield core” layer, create a new “refl lower” layer and fill the selection with white. Remove the right half of the fill.

Select the “refl lower” layer, select any selection tool, right-click on the canvas and select the item Transform the selected area (Transform Selection).

Right click on the canvas again and select Distort mode. Drag the corner points as shown in the screenshot to change the shape of the selection.

Press Enter to apply the changes. Delete selected part (Delete).

Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a value of 1 pixel. Reduce the layer opacity to 50%.

Step 30

Create two more layers: “refl left side” and “refl right side”. Draw highlights on the sides.

Apply the same blur filter and reduce the opacity to 50%. At this point we finished the creation of highlights.

Step 31

Create a new “ribbon front” layer above the “refl right side” layer. Tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) create a selection in the form of a small strip and fill it with 50% gray.

Activate mode Warp (Edit> Transform> Warp) (Edit> Transform> Warp).

On the top bar, select the type of deformation. Arch (Arch).

Pull the top of the grid down to bend the strip to the other side. Click Enter, to apply the changes.

Step 32

Apply the following styles to the ribbon front layer:

Stroke (Stroke): Position – Inside, Mode – Normal, Stroke Type – Color.

Step 33

Inner glow (Inner Glow): Mode – Lightening, Method – Soft.

Step 34

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay): Mode – Normal, Style – Linear.

Step 35

Create a copy of the ribbon front layer and drop it under the original. Tool Move (Move Tool) (V) move the layer on the canvas a few dozen pixels up.

Step 36

Tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) select the left half of the strip.

Step 37

Cut the selected part into a separate layer. (Layer> New> Cut to New Layer (Layer> New> Layer via Cut). Arrange the two halves, as shown in the screenshot.

Step 38

Tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) trim the right and left strips. Name the layers “ribbon left end” and “riboon right end”.

Step 39

Change the gradient style of the layer to the left of the ribbon left end.

Step 40

Change the gradient angle for the “ribbon right end” layer.

Step 41

Now we will connect the parts of the tape. Create two layers: “ribbon left fold” and “ribbon left fold”. Tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) create a strip and change its shape in mode Distortion (Distort). Connect the front part of the ribbon with the rear.

Now we will copy the styles. Right-click on the fx icon near the “ribbon left end” layer. Select item Copy layer style (Copy Layer Style). Then click on the “ribbon left fold” layer and select Paste the layer style (Paste Layer Style). In the same way copy the styles of the right end of the tape on the connecting part.

Step 42

Change the gradient settings for the “ribbon left fold” layer:

Step 43

Gradient settings for the ribbon “right fold” layer.

Step 44

Tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) (L) create a triangular selection at the end of the ribbon.

Step 45

Click Delete, to make a cutout. Do the same on the right side.

Step 46

Tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) (T) write PREMIUM QUALITY. Font “Times New Roman” size 48pt. Apply deformation Arch (Arch) and change the bend.

Step 47

Apply the following styles to the text layer:

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Contour embossing, Method – Smooth, Backlight mode – Lightening, Shadow mode – Multiplication.

Contour (Contour):

Step 48

Step 49

External glow (Outer Glow): Mode – Multiplication, Method – Soft.

Step 50

Reduce the opacity of the “refl top” layer to 50%.

Step 51

Create a new layer above the previous text and write “PSD” on it. The font “Times New Roman” is 122pt in size, the color is black. Apply the following styles:

Stamping (Bevel Emboss): Style – Internal bevel, Method – Hard cut, Backlight mode – Lightening, Shadow mode – Multiplication, Contour – Cone.

Color overlay (Color Overlay):

External glow (Outer Glow): Mode – Multiplication, Method – Soft.

Drop shadow (Drop Shadow): Mode – Multiplication.

Step 52

Choose a tool Free form (Custom Shape Tool) (U) and on the top bar, select a star.

Step 53

Draw a star above the word “PSD”. Copy the styles from the “PSD” layer onto the star. Change the Emboss style settings.

Step 54

Drop shadow (Drop Shadow):

Name the layer “star mid”.

Step 55

Create two copies of the “star mid” layer and name them “star left” and “star right”. Reduce these stars and position them to the right and to the left.

Step 56

Select the “ribbon front” layer. Then create two layers: “ribbon front left refl” and “ribbon front right refl” above the “PREMIUM QUALITY” layer. Tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M) cut out the central part of the strip and fill the remaining areas with white.

Reduce the opacity of the white fill to 50%.

Step 57

Select the “shield outer” layer and create a new “shield shadow” layer below it. Fill the selection with black. Activate mode Free transform (Ctrl + T) and reduce the height as shown below.

Step 58

Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a value of 10 pixels. Reduce the opacity to 70%.

Step 59

Under the “shield outer” layer, create a new “shield shadow spot” layer. Choose a soft brush with 50% opacity and draw a shadow right under the edge of the shield.

Step 60

Now let’s create a ribbon shadow. Select the “ribbon front” layer. Add to the selection the contents of the layers “ribbon left fold”, “ribbon right fold”, “ribbon right end” and “ribbon left end” (Ctrl + Shift + click on the layer thumbnail).

Step 61

Create a new layer above the “shield shadow spot” layer and name it “ribbon shadow”. Fill the selection with black. Drop the shadow under the ribbon.

Step 62

Reduce the height of the shadow.

Step 63

Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a value of 4 pixels.

Step 64

Reduce the opacity of the ribbon shadow to 30%. After applying shadows, the overall area turned out to be too dark. This happens when you apply two layers with reduced opacity.

Step 65

Add a mask to the ribbon shadow layer. With a soft brush, loosen the ribbon shadow at the edges and where the shadow overlay occurs.

Step 66

Now we will create another shadow on the shield. Create a new layer “shield base mid shadow left” above the layer “shield base mid”. Select the “shield base mid” layer, exclude from the selection of the “shield inner” layer (Ctrl+Alt + cry). Squeeze the selection by 3 pixels and fill it with black.

Step 67

Create two copies of the “shield base mid shadow left” layer and name them “shield base mid shadow top” and “shield base mid shadow right”.

Step 68

Choose a tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) (L) and create the selection shown in the screenshot. Click Delete, to separate the three parts of the shadow.

Step 69

Do the same for the other two layers:

Step 70

Add a mask to each of the three layers of the shadow. Choose a soft brush with 50% opacity and paint over the shadows as shown in the screenshot. Such uneven brightness will create volume.

Reduce the opacity of all three layers to 70%.

Step 71

We are almost done. Above the background layer, create a new “bg grd” layer and apply the following styles to it:

Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Step 72

Inner glow (Inner Glow):

Step 73

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay): Mode – Normal, Style – Radial.
