It’s hard to get the same result, but you have to use your imagination and good taste to get something similar or better than this project.
Materials for the lesson:
Star field brushes
Redheadstock’s Clouds II Tassels
Step 1. Create a new document. 960×1000 px, pull out the guides with the tool “Moving” (Move Tool). Restore default colors by pressing D and in the menu Image \ Canvas Size (Image \ Canvas Size) resize the document, increase the width of the canvas (1460 x 1000 px), “canvas extension color” – “background” (we will know what our work looks like at high resolution)
Step 2. Pull out another guide and use it to fill the background layer with dark blue. Radial Gradient (# 0D2B53 – # 010D1F), pull out more guides. It is possible that later we will change the height of the document, so create a new layer and place it on the layers palette under the background layer, fill it with color # 010D1F.
Step 3. Since one of the PSDTUTS readers suggested using real pictures instead of the classic Cloud filter, we will try to take advantage of this offer this time. Use the image of storm clouds, paste on a new layer and name it “clouds”, change the blending mode to “Overlap“(Overlay). Further Layer \ Mask Layer \ Hide All (Layer \ Layer Mask \ Hide all) and apply Radial Gradient from white to black (#FFFFFF – # 000000), stretch it in the middle of the image, starting from the top. Go to the menu Image \ Correction \ Levels to make the clouds darker.
Step 4. Now paste the Spanish coast on a new layer, name the “horizon”, slightly reduce the image. Create a new adjustment layer. Channel Mixing (Adjustment Layer \ Channel Mixer) and select a style: black and white with a blue filter (RGB) (Black White with Blue Filter (RGB)). To apply this effect only to the “horizon” layer, create a clipping mask. To do this, press the key Alt and hover the mouse between the adjustment layer and the horizon layer, as soon as two circles (black and white) appear in place of the cursor, click, or right-click on the adjustment layer on the layers palette and select Create Clipping Mask from the context list. Next for the layer “horizon” change the blending mode to “Overlap (Overlay).
Step 5. Apply a horizon layer. Layer \ Mask Layer \ Show All (Layer Mask \ Reveal all) and using a large black soft brush smooth out the edges of the image. A grunge brush (the author especially likes tassels 250 and 181) makes the edges irregular.
Step 6. Using the “Text” (Type Tool) font “Scriptina” write “Magic”, apply layer styles: External glow\ Outer Glow – color: (#9EB6D0) and Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay (# 70ABF6, #FFFFFF, # B4CBE7, to #FFFFFF). Select all the layers related to the background and put in the group (Ctrl +G), name “background”, put the text layer in the “Logo” group.
Step 7. Now we add stars to our project, you can use any brushes, the author used these Star field brushes. Select brush 550 from the set and paint the stars in white on the new “star1” layer in the “stars” group, apply the layer style Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay using colors (# 3A8FEF, #FFFFFF, and # 66C9FC).
Step 8. Then, using the 615 brush from the set, add more stars to the sky on the new layer “star2”, using the “Eraser” (Eraser Tool) with soft edges remove stars from buildings, apply layer style External glow\ Outer Glow (# 8AB2FF) to the “star2” layer.
Step 9. Add more stars on the “star2” layer, use the eraser to remove the excess and apply the layer style Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay using colors # 6AB1D1, #FFFFFF, # 94CFED, and #FFFFFF.
Step 10. Now load these Star Brushes, choose brush 148, size 65 px, color white and on the new star layer draw a star above the letter “i”, apply a layer style External glow\ Outer Glow (# 00BCF9).
Step 11. Duplicate the “Magic” text layer (Ctrl +J) and write the word “Night”, apply layer styles External glow\ Outer Glow and Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay (# F9DA5B, # FEAE00, and # FFD403).
Step 12. Add clouds. Download redheadstock’s Clouds II tassels, select brush number 2464, size 960px, set the foreground color #234B7F and draw one cloud on the new layer “cloud1”, place in the “background” group, transform the cloud a bit (Ctrl +T)
Step 13. Using the tools “Brightener (Dodge Tool) andDimmer” (Burn Tool) brighten the area around the letters and darken the base of the cloud, change opacity (Opacity) for layer “cloud1” on 50%.
Step 14. Add one more cloud to the new layer “cloud2”, you can draw any cloud, use color5F83A5, brighten the lower edge of the cloud.
Step 15. Repeat the previous step, but this time use another brush and color #36638C, resize and work with the tools “Brightener (Dodge Tool) andDimmer ” (Burn Tool).
Step 16. Tool “Eraser” (Eraser Tool) with large soft edges, remove the bottom of the “cloud1” layer to create a fading effect.
Step 17. Add a background for the content using the “Rectangle” (Rectangle tool) in shape mode, draw a rectangle color (#0A1D37) on the new layer below the “cloud” group (the rectangle lies within the guides). Next, apply the mask. Layer \ Mask Layer \ Show All (Layer \ Layer Mask \ Reveal all), fill with a black and white linear gradient, pull out the guides.
Step 18. Add another rectangle color #091525 on the right side, apply a mask and add a gradient.
Step 19. In this step, we complete the design of the header, add some details. Paste the moon on the new “moon-rss” layer, transform and add a yellow tint (Ctrl +U) apply layer styles External glow\ Outer Glow and Internal glow\ Inner Glow.
Step 20. Add a small cloud, color #7997B3 on the new layer, on the layers palette, place above the layer with the moon, instrument “Eraser” (Eraser Tool) with soft edges erase the edges of the cloud.
Step 21. Add a classic RSS button (#DCA30B) between the layer with the moon and the cloud (you can see the principle of creating the RSS button here), apply layer styles Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay, External glow\ Outer Glow, Shadow\Drop Shadow. Add a star (step 10).
Step 22. Insert an image with a scroll on a new layer, we will use it as a background for the navigation bar. Transform and apply a Flag Warp.
Step 23. Tool “Dimmer” (Burn Tool) darken areas of the scroll.
Step 24. To improve the scroll structure, apply a layer style. Gradient overlay\ Gradient Overlay (# 045F96 and # FBF4BD) and Overlapping pattern\ Pattern Overlay.
Step 25. Add a shadow to the scroll. You can apply a layer style. Shadow\ Drop Shadow or apply the following method: duplicate the scroll layer (Ctrl +J), on the layers palette, place it under the original, then (Ctrl +U) and slider Brightness (Lightening) on -100, apply Filter \ Blur \ Gauss Blur (Filter \ Blur \Gaussian Blur) with a small radius, apply the distortion deformation.
Step 26. Add a cloud on top of the scroll on the new layer, transform, lighten, darken (step 15). Tool “Text” (Type Tool) font Georgia – italic, color # 0B1827 – for standard links and color #211808 for links that change color when you hover the mouse. Add stars and lines opacity for star layer lower to 40%.
Step 27. Create a new layer above the scroll layer, select “Brush” (Brush Tool) from the standard set and make watercolor strokes in different colors.
Step 28. Add text to RSS, font Aria, 10 px, yellow color (#F2C90D) and white (#Ffffff), do not forget to use text with anti-aliasing or None anti-aliasing parameters (the “Symbol” palette), browsers do not support text anti-aliasing.
Step 29. As an extra detail, add a balloon, apply a layer style. Color overlay\ Color Overlay (#1F416E – blending mode (Blending Mode): overlap (Overlay)), slightly darken the left side of the balloon.
Step 30. Then using a brush 615 from the Star field brushes set (see Step 8), add more stars above the balloon and the scroll, draw a line 3 px tool “Line” (Line Tool and eraser remove extra stars.
Step 31. We write the name and date on the new layer “Post”, add a star near the date.
Step 32. Add information. Add an image from the left side of 200 px to 200 px, apply the style Stroke\ Stroke size 1px and a short description on the right side, also add comments to the right view. For the comments area, create a new group called “Comments” and add a small background with a small cloud and stars. Draw tool “Line” (Line Tool) color line (#1D324F). Duplicate the group “Post”, add content. Increase the height of the document, as in step 1., increase the height of the background layer and the layer that we created in step 2.
Step 33 Create a form to search on the right side. Create a new group, create a new layer in it, draw a new cloud, as shown below. Using the tool “Rectangle with rounded corners” (Rounded Rectangle Tool), draw a shape as shown below, apply the Stroke \ Stroke layer style, size 1px, Colour (#697372), install Fill (Fill) 50%.
Step 34. Add stars above the cloud layer, remove the extra stars. Duplicate the balloon layer, then go to the menu Editing \ Transforming \ Flip Horizontal (Edit \Transform\ Flip horizontal), place this layer in the “search” group. Add text, font Georgia Italic color is yellow (D5A934). Add a button “Go!“and the bright star behind the text.
Step 35. Add text, titles, links, and place each section in a separate group, do not forget about the stars and guides.
Step 36. Remove part of the background using the layer mask in the lower part to the right, add clouds and stars, duplicate the balloon again.
Step 37. Create a basement, make the edges softer – create a layer mask and walk with a soft brush. Add clouds, dark cloud (#0B1C38) and a small cloud (#223E63). Clouds will be a background image, so try to avoid intersection with the top guide, put all the layers in the “basement” group
Step 38. Dim the clouds, draw the stars, erase the excess
That’s all! The author hopes that you will find many useful things in this lesson.
