Site layout in Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to make a beautiful layout. The lesson is very detailed and is unlikely to be interesting to advanced users. In this lesson I have not missed a single detail; I will explain each of my actions. Good luck!

Here is a preview of what we will do today. Click here to view the preview in better quality.

Materials for the lesson:

960 Grid

Set of icons Aquaticus social

Creating a new document

We will use the system 960 Grid. Download, open the file 960_grid_12_col.psd.

Work on the background

Let’s get started with the background. We press G, in the opened gradient editor we set the colors – with #dcdcdc before #ffffff:

Now draw a gradient line from bottom to top, as shown in the figure:

You should have something like this:

Work on the cap

Before we start working on the background, we need to define the upper border of our layout. We press View> New Guide (View> New Guide) and set the settings as shown below:

We now turn to the logo; we need to create a selection 280 by 40 pixels, as shown below. I used Polygonal Lasso Tool (Polygonal Lasso).

Now we press Shift+Backspace, to fill the selection with white.

We apply a gradient overlay to our rectangle. Set the colors as shown below:

Now write your name with the following settings:
Font: Rockwell
Size: 46px
Type: Normal
Colour: # 1e1e1c

Create another selection 270 to 40, should be something like this:

Fill the selection, apply the same gradient on top, and create a shadow using the following settings:

Using the same text settings, just by changing the size to 33 pixels create a subtitle:

Before we move on to the next step, make sure that all the layers are divided into groups and well organized:

Work on navigation

We’ll start by creating a small rectangle — create it using Rounded rectangle tool (Rectangle with rounded corners) radius 5 pixels. The rectangle should be sized 65 by 30 pixels.

Next, set the layer to Stroke, Overlay Gradient, Inner Shadow:

Do not forget to add the most important thing – the text. I used colors #ffffff and # 1e1e1c.

Select the text layer and the rectangle layer in the layer list.

And before moving on, group them (Ctrl + G).

Adding text

Create two new tickers in the distance 50 pixels, as it shown on the picture:

For the text we use the following settings:
Font: Rockwell
Size: 30px
Type: Normal
Colour: # e8204e – # 676666

Add another line:

Adding pictures

Create a selection 250 by 150 pixels and place as shown in the figure, focusing on the vertical and horizontal markings:

Fill the selection with any color, name the new layer with a convenient name for you and apply the Stroke style to the new layer:

Let’s add an image. To do this, use File> Place (File> Post).

Make sure that the layer with the image you added is on top of the layer with the frame in the list of layers.

Now click on the layer with the right mouse button and click Create Clipping Mask (Create layer mask).

It’s time to create a shadow! Via Elliptical Marquee Tool (Oval region) create a selection of the oval, as shown below, and fill the selection with the color # 1e1e1c.

Now apply the filter Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with radius 2 pixels.

Copy the layers and create the same illustration on the right side of the layout.

The central image will do more – 340 by 200 pixels, and place it like this:

Repeat the previous steps. It should get something like this:

Do not forget to group the layers!

Adding arrows to the slider

Using Custom shape tool (Arbitrary shape), create an arrow color # e8204e.

Set styles Inner shadow, Stroke:

Placed exactly as shown:

Duplicate the arrow and place a duplicate on the right side of the layout:

Add content

Add a couple of rulers again, retreating by 50 pixels:

Add the desired text using the settings shown below:

Add two more lines:

Add text:

And another line, focusing on the picture below:

Using RoundedRectangleTool (Rectangle with rounded corners), create a shape with a radius 5 pixels and size 100 to 30 Apply Styles Inner Shadow, Emboss / Bevel, Gloss, Gradient Overlay:

Inside the circle with an arrow:

By color # 3e3e3e write the necessary text inside and apply the Shadow style to it:

Draw a separator – two strips, as shown below:

We place it like this:

We write the title.

Via Ellipse tool (Ellipse) create a circle 20 to 20 and apply the Inner Shadow style to it, Stroke:

Via CustomShapeTool(Arbitrary figure) we place a tick inside:

Add a shadow! Create an oval selection below, fill it with black and use Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with radius 2 pixels.

Add text:

And copy our items a couple of times:

We organize all layers into groups – layers of each item into a separate one:

Work on the bottom of the content

We start, as always, with a new line, retreating 50 pixels:

Create another header, and again the tickers:

Another line, as shown below:

We write the following text with the following settings:

Create a separator – 2 horizontal bars:

I think the best way to properly place a separator is to make it visible. For this, I have my own way. Create a bright rectangle, and moving the separator, move the rectangle, focusing on it.

See how it works! :)

Repeat the previous steps to get something like this:

Adding Icons

Now add icons of social networks and captions to them. You can download the icon set. Aquaticus social, made Junwei.

Place the icon and text relative to the markup as shown below:

Work on the footer

Create the last line in the markup:

Do the separator again:

Place the separator as shown below:

Add text using the following settings:

And the final touch is copyright:

And you’re done!

You can download .PSDhere.
