Filter Gallery – Part 3

We continue to study the filters of the program Photoshop. In this article we will look at filters from the package Sketch. So, go to the menu Filter – Filter Gallery.

Sketch Pack

In this package, the colors set in the palette – the main and background colors – play a big role.

1. Magic Pencil (Conte Crayon)

Simulates a drawing with colored chalk or a very soft pencil on a textural surface. Primary color is used for dark areas and background color for light areas. Parameter Foreground Level (Foreground Level) sets the level of usage of the base color in the range from 1 to 15. Background Level (Background Level) sets the level of background color usage in the range from 1 to 15. In the list Texture select the type of texture:

  • Brick
  • Burlap
  • Canvas
  • Limestone (Sandstone)

To the right of the option Texture button is located Load Texture, It is designed to use another image in the * .psd format as the basis for the texture. Scaling sets the zoom pattern of the texture in the range from 50 to 200%. Relief sets the level of relief in the range from 0 to 50. In the list Light The following directions of light rays are proposed:

  • Down (Bottom)
  • Down and left (Bott Left)
  • Left
  • Up and left (Top Left)
  • Up (Thor)
  • Up and right (Thor Right)
  • Right
  • Down and right (Bottom Right)

Function Invert (Invert) inverts the dark and light areas in the image.

2. Gypsum (Plaster)

Used to simulate flat reliefs made from plaster or plaster. The image is formed as a bulk plaster cast, and then the result is colored using the main and background colors. Dark areas become convex, and light areas are depressed. The color of the gypsum is taken from the base color. Parameter Tone Balance (Image Balance) designed to establish the proportions of light and dark terrain in the range from 0 to 50. Smoothness sets the image accuracy in the range from 1 to 15. In the list Light The following directions of light rays are proposed:

  • Down (Bottom)
  • Down and left (Bott Left)
  • Left
  • Up and left (Top Left)
  • Up (Thor)
  • Up and right (Thor Right)
  • Right
  • Down and right (Bottom Right)

3. Photocopy (Photocopy)

Simulates a copy on the copier. The color of the photocopy is selected as the main color. Parameter Detailing sets the order of accuracy of parts in the range from 1 to 24. Darkness sets the degree of darkening, or more precisely, toner, in the range from 1 to 50.

4. Linocut (Stamp)

Simulates images created with a rubber or wooden stamp. Parameter Tone Balance (Light / Dark Balance) Sets the threshold value for the distribution of white and black areas in the range from 0 to 50. Smoothness determines the degree of softening of the image in the range from 1 to 50. This filter is best used with black and white images.

5. Chalk and coal (ChalkCharcoal)

Uses three shades for the image. The primary color is used for drawing with charcoal, and the background color is used for drawing with chalk, therefore it is desirable to choose a light shade as the background color of the program, and a dark shade as the main color. The third color, a neutral gray tint, is set by default. Parameter Coal (Charcoal Area) sets the level of use of coal in the range from 0 to 20. Chalk (Chalk Area) sets the level of application of chalk in the range from 0 to 20. Stroke Pressure determines the level of pressure in the range from 0 to 5.

6. Wet paper (Water paper)

Designed to simulate the creation of a pattern on wet paper, preserves the colors of the original image, adding vertical strokes to the background. Parameter Fiber Length (Fiber Length) determines the maximum fiber length in the range from 3 to 50. Brightness sets the image brightness in the range from 0 to 100. Contrast (Contrast) sets the image contrast in the range from 0 to 100.

7. Halftone Pattern

Designed to simulate printing, using the main and background colors of the program. Parameter Size sets the size of the raster point in the range from 1 to 12. Contrast (Contrast) sets the contrast level in the range from 0 to 50. In the T listPattern Type select the type of raster point:

  • Circle
  • Dot (dot)
  • Line

8. Postage paper (Note Paper)

Simulates drawing on soft paper, uses the main and background colors of the program, as well as black to create shadows. Parameter Tone Balance (Image Balance) sets the ratio of light and dark levels in the range from 0 to 50. Graininess sets the amount of image grain in the range from 0 to 20. Relief sets the size of a single relief element in the range from 0 to 25.

9. Torn Edges

Rebuilds the image so that it seems to be composed of uneven, torn pieces of paper, and then color it using the main and background colors. Parameter Tone Balance (Image Balance) Sets the threshold for light and dark tones from 0 to 50. Smoothness sets the degree of blurring of the image contours in the range from 1 to 15. Contrast (Contrast) sets the contrast of the edges of the contours in the range from 1 to 25.

10. Relief (Bas Relief)

Transformation of the original image into something resembling a bas-relief, using the main and background colors of the program. If you carefully select the colors, the result may resemble copper foil, “forged” metal or an image embossed on the stone. Parameter Detailing sets the degree of accuracy of parts in the range from 1 to 15. Smoothness sets the degree of sharpness from 1 to 15. In the list Light Direction Directions of rays of illumination are suggested

  • Down (Bottom)
  • Down and left (Bott Left)
  • Left
  • Up and left (Top Left)
  • Up (Thor)
  • Up and right (Thor Right)
  • Right
  • Down and right (Bottom Right)

11. Reticulation

Simulates the photographic process of reticulation, which occurs when processing photographic and film in solution when the permissible temperature is exceeded. As a result, the image appears crumpled in dark areas and slightly grainy in light. Parameter Density sets the density of cracks in the range from 0 to 50. Foreground Level (Foreground Level) sets the number of primary colors in the range from 0 to 50. Background Level (Background Level) sets the number of background color in the range from 0 to 50.

12. Mascara (Graphic Pen)

Imitation drawing drawing pen. The color of the original image is replaced, the base color is used for ink, and the background color is used for paper. Parameter Stroke Length sets the largest size of the dashed line performed by the drawing pen in the range from 1 to 15. Tone Balance (Light / Dark Balance) sets the threshold level of brightness, which divides the image into dark and light areas in the range from 0 to 100. In the list Stroke Direction select the direction of hatching with a drawing pen:

  • Diagonally right (Right Diag)
  • Horizontal
  • Diagonally Left (Left Diag)
  • Vertical (Vertical)

13. Coal (Charcoal)

Simulates a charcoal drawing. The coal is drawn in the main color, and the paper – in the background. Parameter Intensity (Charcoal Thickness) sets the thickness of strokes in the range from 1 to 7. Detailing Sets the degree of image accuracy in the range from 0 to 5. Tone Balance (Light / Dark Balance) defines the threshold levels of white and black in the range from 0 to 100.

14. Chrome (Chrome)

Mimics shiny metallic surfaces such as chromium, nickel or mercury. Parameter Detailing sets the number of reflective surfaces in the range from 0 to 10. Smoothness determines the level of smoothness of reflective surfaces in the range from 0 to 10. After applying the filter, increase the image contrast in the “Levels” dialog box.
