Abstract portrait in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create an abstract portrait of a girl, using the texture of the bark of a tree, as well as grunge brushes. You will learn about working with layer-masks of adjustment layers to add unique effects to an image, as well as learn how to combine texture and use different elements to create a beautiful abstract effect.

This is a lesson of medium difficulty, therefore, some steps may seem complicated, but why not try it!

Video lesson

If you have any difficulties when performing Step 3, you can watch the video tutorial, where you will learn how to apply a wood texture over the model’s face image:

Video – http://youtu.be/oafmWPr_T3o

Step 1

Create a new document with dimensions 800px X 1136px, fill the background with a color shade of # cccec9. Next, we will add a texture to the background. Open the wood texture using the tool Rectangular area (rectangular marquee tool), select a part of the texture, as shown in the screenshot below:

Copy / paste the selected part of the texture on our working paper, apply scaling according to the size of the document. Add a correction to the texture layer:

Black-white(Black and White)

Levels (Levels)

Change the blending mode for the texture layer to Subtraction (Subtract). (for earlier versions of Photoshop, instead of this mode, you can use Overlap (overlay).

Using a soft white brush, add a glow in the center of the image:

Next, create a new layer. Use the Grunge brush on the new layer – I have the following effect.

Step 2

Open the model image. Cut out the model image, and then copy / paste the copied model image onto our working paper:

Next, add a filter to the model layer. Blur on the surface (surface blur), apply the settings that are shown in the screenshot below:

Using the Grunge brush set, use as an eraser to process the edges of the model’s image, as shown in the screenshot below: (try to vary the size of the brush while it is being painted).

Next, to the model layer, add 3 adjustment layers as clipping masks:

Black-white(Black and White)

Hide the effect of the adjustment layer Black and white (Black and White) on layer layer mask.

Levels (Levels)

Hide the effect of the adjustment layer Levels (Levels) on layer layer mask.

Curves (Curves)

Step 3

Next, we will add the texture of the bark of the tree around the model’s face, using the tool Fast selection (quick selection tool) to select individual fragments of the texture of the bark of the tree, and then copying / pasting the selected fragments of the bark onto our working paper, as shown in the screenshot below:

Activate the transformation, apply Distortion (Distort) to a fragment of the bark of a tree, as shown in the screenshot below:

On a layer with a fragment of tree bark, use the option Specify edge(Refine Edge). With this option, we will create rougher bark edges.

Next, on the layer with a fragment of the bark of the tree, apply 3 corrections:

Black-white(Black and White)

Levels(Levels)

Curves(Curves)

Next, you can duplicate a layer of tree bark fragments. Shift duplicate layers by placing them around the model’s face image, as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 4

We finished the work with the texture. Let’s skip and then duplicate the layer with the background. Choose a tool Stamp (clone stamp tool):

Install a soft tool brush. Stamp (clone stamp tool):

Select the following area as the source of the cloning, and then paint around the face of the model, as shown in the screenshot below:

Next, using the layer mask, hide separate cloning areas:

You can also apply a filter Plastics (liquify filter) to individual parts of the image:

Step 5

Next, we will make a small color correction, slightly adding color shades. Add the following adjustment layers.

Curves (Curves)

Hide the correction on the layer mask of the adjustment layer Curves (Curves):

Selective color correction (Selective color)

Color Balance (Color Balance)

Result.

We have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and it was useful for you. See you, have a nice day!
