In this tutorial I will explain how to create an illustration with twisted light ribbons.
Materials for this lesson:
Step 1. Create a new document sized 3200 x 2100 pixels, with a resolution of 300.
Go to creating the background: create a new layer and select the tool. Gradient (gradient tool (G)). Enter the gradient editor and create a gradient from black to dark gray: from # 000000 to # 202020.
Click the gradient at the bottom left of the background and drag it to the top right of the background.
In order to get rid of the emerging line of transition between the colors in the gradient, you can add noise using the Add Noise filter: Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter> Noise> Add noise), noise radius 1.45%, distribution: Uniform, Monochrome.
Open image Starry sky and transfer it to the background. Reduce the image of the starry sky so that the size matches the size of the background.
Change the blending mode for the starry sky layer to Light replacement (Lighten), then apply the command to it. Levels (Levels) ((Ctrl + L)) with the values shown in the figure:
Step 2. Open the image Man with a scarf and transfer it to our document with a background:
With the tool Pen (pen tool (P)) separate the man from the background. The path with the Pen tool along the contour needs to be drawn as accurately as possible.
After the outline around the man is created, right-click on it and select the item To form a selected area, feathering: 0.
Here is the image of a man after you have separated him from the background:
Now you need to fix the lighting layer with a man. Enter the menu: Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast (Image> Adjustments> Brightness and Contrast) and set those values that are shown:
Step 3. Open the image Blurred light lines, transfer it to our document and place under the layer with the man.
Enter the menu: Image – Correction – Brightness / Contrast (Image> Adjustments> Brightness and Contrast) and apply the values (apply the correction twice):
I want to add more red and pink shades to the layer with blurred light lines. For this, I will use the Hue / Saturation command: Image – Correction – Colortone / saturation (Image> Adjustments> Hue and Saturation).
To get detailed blurred lines, apply the Blur in motion filter to the layer with them: Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Blur> Motion Blur). Options:
Offset: 710 pixels
Activate the tool Rectangular Selection(Rectangular Marquee tool (M)), highlighting highlighting 10 pixels. Select part of the light strip and copy it to a new layer ().
Step 4. Activate the tool Move (move tool (V)). It is necessary to distort the part of the bands copied to a new layer and give it a magnificent shape. For this we will use the deformation: Editing – Transform – Warp (Edit> Transform> Warp).
Change the blending mode for the deformed layer with lines to Light replacement (Lighten) and duplicate it twice. Move one duplicate slightly above the original layer with the breaks, and the other slightly below the original layer. Reduce the opacity of the upper layer to 60%, lower to 30%.
Duplicate the main layer with lines and place these copies over the entire image. With the tool Eraser (Eraser (E) tool) erase those parts of the lines that you consider superfluous.
Step 5. Again duplicate the original layer with the lines and place it above the layer with the man. Deform the layer with the lines again and erase the excess parts. For a duplicate layer with lines, change the blending mode to Lightening (Screen).
Step 6. Create a new layer and select the tool. Area (horizontal line) (Single Row Marquee tool (M)) – it is located in the same group with the tool Oval selection area . Draw a horizontal line and, without changing the tool, right-click on the selection and select the item: Fill. Choose to fill yellow:
To the layer with the line, apply the Wave filter: Filter – Distortion – Wave (Filter> Distort> Wave). Set the values shown in the figure to make the line wave-like.
Change the wave pattern overlay to Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge) and place it over the original layer with the light line. Eraser wipe off excess wave parts.
Duplicate the wavelet layer as many times as you like and place them on the image:
Step 7. Create a new layer on top of all layers – we will add light details to the image. Choose a round brush with a hardness of 100% and with a size of 3 pixels. Then open the palette Brushes (F5), and go to the tab Form Dynamics. In the Manage item, select the type: pen pressure. Now select the tool Pen (pen tool (P)) and draw a line. Then, with the Pen tool active, right-click on the drawn outline and select Contour Stroke. In the window that opens, select the Brush tool to stroke the outline. Now the line will be outlined with the brush with the setting you made in the Brushes palette.
Repeat this step several times, or simply duplicate the already drawn line several times and place duplicates in different parts of the image:
Create a new layer, select the tool. Rectangular Selection (Rectangular Marquee tool) and on the new layer draw a rectangular selection. Set the foreground color to white and select the tool Brush (Brush tool). Use a brush approximately 70 pixels in size, with a stiffness of 0%, and draw a white line along the bottom of the rectangular selection.
With the tool Deformation, distort the drawn line, duplicate this layer several times and place it in different parts of the image.
Your image should look like this:
Step 8. Create a new layer, open the layer style. External glow (outer Glow) and set the following parameters:
With the tool Rectangular Selection(Rectangular Marquee tool) draw small selections and fill them with white. These rectangles will automatically add that layer style to the Outer Glow:
If desired, the glowing rectangles can be deformed:
Duplicate the layer with glowing rectangles several times and place these copies on the image. If you wish, you can add the exact same layer style to other layers with lines.
Step 9. Create a new layer, choose a round soft brush with a size of 65 pixels with a hardness of 0% and opacity of 35%, and set the foreground color to white. Use this brush to draw a few light spots on the image of a man.
Step 10. So we got to the final touch: add a correction layer Photo filter on top of all other layers. Enter the menu Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Photo Filter (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter) and select cool filter, which will add a blue tint to the image:
Now add the Curves adjustment layer: Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Curves):
And you can enjoy the final result:
Wish you luck!
