Cartoon from photos in photoshop

In this tutorial you will learn how to retouch images in order to get a caricature portrait from a photo. Photoshop includes many powerful tools to help you work with photos.

In the process, you will learn how to use Adobe Camera RAW to make changes to snapshot settings, and we will actively use the tools. Transformations (Transform tool) and filter Plastics (Liquify) to change the character’s outline.

Let’s start!

Video to the lesson:

To complete this lesson, you will need a photo in good quality:

Step 1. Original image

Below you see an image that I haven’t changed yet.

Open the DNG file in Photoshop Camera Raw. Click on the button-line (highlighted in blue) of the working data of the photograph (workflow options) in the lower part of the window.

Check the box next to the function “Open in Photoshop as smart objects” (Open in Photoshop as Smart Objects).

Step 2. Raw conversion

Open the photo in Photoshop. Right-click on the original layer with the guy and in the appeared submenu use the item “Create Smart Object Via Copy” (New Smart Object via Copy).

Translator’s Note: To open a photo from Camera Raw in Photoshop, click the Open Object button in the bottom right of the Camera Raw panel. To go back from the copy of the smart object to the Camera Raw settings, double-click the left mouse button on the mini-icon of the smart object on the copy layer.

Let’s start with the basics. We need a good foundation for our comic image, so use my settings for this image.

Now sharpen the photo a little

Next, let’s work on the contrast. To make the T-shirt more expressive, move the slider with yellow color to the right to +30.

Stay on this tab and adjust other colors.

Step 3. The size of the workspace

In the process of work, our character will change – we will increase the head, we will make hands and legs thinner in order to add a cartoon look to the guy.
For such manipulations, we need more workspace than we see at this stage. Activate the tool Frame (Сrop Tool).

Using this tool, we increase the working field. To do this, pull the corners of the frame in the direction “from the center.”

Step 4. Increase the face and head

Activate the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool).

Using this tool, create a selection around the character’s head. Then copy the selected area to a new layer using the key combination Ctrl + J.

Activate the tool Move (Move Tool).

Change anchor point. Move it from the center of the transformation frame to the character’s neck area. Now drag one of the top nodes of the frame toward the top edge of the canvas. That way you can enlarge the guy’s head.

You have noticed that an unnecessary halo has formed around the character’s head. To remove it we will use layer mask . To add a layer mask, click on the appropriate icon “Add layer mask “(” Add Layer Mask “) at the bottom of the layers panel.

Then activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). For quick access to this tool, press the Latin key “on the keyboard”AT“.

With the Brush tool active, right-click on the canvas, this allows you to quickly go to the tool settings. In the window that appears, set the necessary parameters for the brush and hide a halo area around the head on the layer mask.

Step 5. Work on character forms

Press combination CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E, to create a new (merged) layer. Then go to Filter – Convert for smart filters (Filter – Convert for Smart Filters).

Go back to the menu Filter, but this time select the filter Plastics (Liquify).

From the proposed filter tools, select Deformation (Forward Warp Tool).

On the right side of the Plastic filter panel, you can adjust the size of the working brush. You see in the image below that I use quite a lot of value, but remember that you can change the size at any time.

In order to deform an object, move the cursor to the desired area, hold down the left mouse button and, without releasing it, move the cursor in the desired direction. In the picture below, the arrows show areas of the body that I have made thinner.

If there are areas in the photo that you want to keep from the effects of deformation (for example, in my case I want to keep the shape of an appetizing pineapple), then activate the “To freeze(Freeze Mask Tool) and process the desired area.

Activate the tool again Deformation (Forward Warp Tool) and modify the areas lying close to the “frozen”. As you can see in the example, I deformed my armpit, but the shape of the pineapple was not affected.

It’s time to pay a little attention to the organization of the working space. We select all the layers with the main character and form one group of them.

Step 6. Delete the background

A good background removal tool is Pen (Pen Tool.). Activate this tool in the toolbar. Create an outline around the main character.
Of course, this is a rather painstaking and lengthy work, but as popular wisdom says: “Without labor, you can’t even pull a fish out of a pond”!

When the contour is closed, make it active and add a layer mask to the group with the character by clicking on the “Add layer mask“(” Add Layer Mask “)

Step 7. Create a new background.

Switch to Layer – New Fill Layer – Color (Layer> New Fill Layer> Solid Color).

In the window that appears, you can choose the color with which the new layer will be filled. I will use gray – # 494949, but you can of course choose any other.

Please note that a new layer with a colored background must be placed under the character group with layers. Also, for the convenience of further work, I immediately added the Background group, in which I placed a new gray layer.

Step 8. Retouching

Activate the tool Lasso (Lasso Tool).
Stand on a layer with a character (to which you previously applied a plastic filter).

Create a selection of the hat section as shown below. And then press the key combination CTRL + J, in order to copy it to a new layer.

Always give the names of the working layers, it will greatly speed up your work. I called the layer with the hat piece “Retouching”.

Activate the tool Move (Move Tool). Mirror the copied patch of the headdress and place it as shown in the example below.

In order for the new section of the hat to merge with the entire headdress, make it softer. This tool will help you Eraser (Eraser Tool).

We haven’t finished yet! Let’s fix some skin imperfections using the tool Recovering cysts s (Healing Brush Tool).

Working with this tool is very simple. Hold key Alt and select the area of clean skin that you want to replace the defect. And then just draw the place you want to “mask”.

Step 9. Frequency decomposition

Now, I’ll show you some great Natalia Taffarel retouching techniques. Many people use them for high-quality retouching. The basic principle is that the image is decomposed into two parts: color and details. Thus, you can make significant adjustments without losing quality! Let’s start!

Step 9.1

Press combination CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E, to create a new (merged) layer. Then create a copy of the resulting layer (CTRL + J). As a result, you get two copies of the merged layer.
Create from these two layers a separate group called “Frequency Separation”. Rename the first copy layer to “Color”.

Step 9.2

Make the “Color” layer active and apply to it Blur – Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur).

In the filter settings, set the radius to 10 pixels. (this is a very important point!).

Step 9.3

Now rename another layer copy to “Details”. Switch to Image – Correction – Brightness \ Contrast (Image – Adjustments – Brightness / Contrast).

Now be careful! First check the box next to the function Use former (Use legacy), and then set the contrast value to “-50”.

Step 9.4

For the “Details” layer, we apply a filter Colour contrast (High Pass). You will find this filter by going to Filter – Other – Color Contrast (Filter – Other —High Pass). In the filter settings, again set the radius to 10 pixels.

Set the blending mode for the “Details” layer to Linear light (Linear Light)

Step 9.5

In this step, we will remove the print on the T-shirt. Stand on the “Details” layer. Activate the tool Stamp (Clone Stamp Tool).

Make sure that you have set the stamp sample (sample) in the tool settings.Active layer“(” Current Layer “).

Step 9.6

Now carefully draw the inscription on the T-shirt with the selected sample.

The result looks blurry, but it should be.

Add a new layer above the “Color” layer. Give a name to the new layer “Magic”.

Step 9.7

Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Set the brush opacity in the tool settings to around 20%.
With the Brush Tool active, hold down the Alt and click on the shirt to choose a yellow color. Now, paint the inscription on the T-shirt (standing on the “Magic” layer).
You can also remove some dark areas on the face or on the pineapple using the brush method described above.

Step 10.1 Color Correction

Activate the tool Polygonal Lasso(Polygonal Lasso Tool). Create a selection around the contour of the T-shirt.

Add adjustment layer Color tone \ Saturation (Sat / saturation). In the color palette, select “Yellow”. Then activate the eyedropper tool and click on the character’s t-shirt.

Now we quickly change the color of the shirt to blue. To do this, simply drag the “Color tone” slider to the right to the value “+155”.

Zoom in and you will notice that there are yellow areas in the picture. In order to remove them, you can use the small arrows on the color scale. If this is not enough – adjust the layer mask layer Hue \ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 10.2

Activate the mode Quick mask (Quick mask mode). Using the brush tool, select the area of the character’s teeth. Click the Quick mask mode icon again to load the selected area.

Using the resulting selection, we change the color of the teeth. To do this, use the adjustment layer. Color tone \ Saturation (Sat / saturation). The settings are shown in the picture below.

Step 10.3
Retouch your eyes the same way.
Create a selection of the eye area and use the adjustment layer. Selective color correction (Selective color). In the settings, select a color – neutral. You can see my settings below.

Blend Mode for the Adjustment Layer Set the selective color correction (Selective Color) to Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge) and lower the opacity to 20% -30%.

Step 10.4

We work on a hat.
Create a selection of a hat, in any way convenient for you. Add an adjustment layer Vibration (Vibrance). You can use my settings, which are shown below.

Blend Mode Vibration (Vibrance) change to Soft light (Soft Light), and lower the opacity to 40%.

Step 11.1 We draw a smile on a t-shirt

Switch to File – Create (File – New) and create a new document with the settings below.

Change the foreground color to yellow, I use the color – # f1b500. Activate the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Too).

Draw a large yellow circle. Press the key combination Ctrl + R in order to add a ruler to the workbench. Add two horizontal guides to draw the eyes.

Step 11.2

Activate the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Too) again, in order to draw the eyes. Hold key Alt (this will allow you to subtract the shape you are drawing from the already finished area) and draw an oval. Use the tool Outline selection (Direct Selection Tool) to adjust the position of the “empty” oval.

Draw the mouth in exactly the same way.

Choose a tool Pen – Delete anchor point (Delete Anchor Point Tool) and delete the point at the top of the oval-mouth.

Turn the oval into a smile. Move the anchor point guides towards the center. When you’re satisfied with the shape of a smile, activate the tool. Move (Move tool) and drag the entire smile into the main working document.

Step 11.3

Place the emoticon layer as shown below. Create a group and name the layer and group “Smilie”.

Right-click on the “Smilie” layer and in the appeared submenu select the item “Rasterize layer “ (“Rasterize Layer”).

Activate the tool Move (Move tool) and place the smile on the guy’s shirt. Use tools if necessary. Transformations (Тtransform tool) and correct the perspective. Set the blending mode of the “Smilie” layer to Chromaticity (Color)

Step 11.4

Let’s make it so that the smile would look more realistic. Activate the tool Finger (Smudge Too). Using this tool we will create folds on the fabric.

Now add a layer mask to the “Smilie” layer and edit the petal area (open the petals).

Step 12. Change the background color.

The color I use for the new background is # bf8213.

Use the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) and draw a small round selection as shown below:

The next step, we will change the outline of the round selection, to do this, go to Selection – Modification – Feather (Select – Modify – Feather). Enter a value for a radius of 400 pixels.

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the small “Create a new adjustment layer“And select from the list Levels (Levels).
Move the mid-tones slider to the left or enter the value “2.57” in the “Input Values” field.

Now you need to repeat the previous steps, but use other values:

  1. the initial selection is oval;
  2. leave the Feather radius value the same or choose according to your own taste;
  3. add adjustment layer Levels 2 (Levels 2);
  4. invert layer layer mask Layers 2 (Ctrl + I );
  5. set the value of the middle tones of the second layer Levels 2 (Levels 2) to “0.65”

Step 13. Adjust layer mask

If you look at the image with the character, you will notice “dirty” edges. For this reason, we will additionally correct the layer mask of the group with the main character. Click once on the layer mask of the Person group.

Switch to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter Blur Gaussian Blur). Set the blur radius to 1.5 pixels.

For the next mask correction go to Filter – Other – Minimum (Filter Other> Minimum). The radius value for this filter is 2.5 pixels.

Step 14. Light and shadow

Create a new group and name it “Dodge and Burn”. In this group create a new layer (Layer – New – Layer (Layer New Layer)). Call it “Dodge and Burn Hard”, in the layer settings set: blending mode – Overlap (Overlay), fill – 50% gray (50% gray).

Activate the tool Brush (B rush Tool). In the settings of the brush set the opacity (opacity) – 2%, the type of brush – round, hardness – 0%. Draw shadows and light on the “Dodge and Burn Hard” layer. To do this, use the brush color black (for the shadow) and white (for the light areas) / To quickly switch between colors, use the “X” (X) key.

Repeat the previous step again on the new layer, but use the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light) instead of Overlapping (Overlay).

Step 15

Create a new group called “Color and Light Front”, and then click, on the already familiar, icon “Create a new adjustment layer“. In the list of layers, select “Colour“(Solid Color). In the settings window, enter the color – # bf8213.

Position the layer “Colour“(Solid Color) as shown below. Set the opacity value to about 5%.

Click on the icon “Create New Layer“(At the bottom of the layers panel). Name the new layer “Light” (“Light on the neck”).

Activate the tool Brush (B rush Tool). In the settings, set: opacity (opacity) about 3%, brush type – round, rigidity – 0%, color – white. The size of the brush should be small, since we will use this brush to paint the light rays on the character’s neck.

Step 16. Picture Effect

Create a new group called “Final” (“Final”). In this group create a layer-copy of all layers by pressing the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E.

Rename the resulting layer to “Paint Look” and convert it into a smart object (right-click on the layer and select “in the submenu”Convert to smart object“).

Then go to Filter – Oil Painting (Filter – Oil Paint). Settings are listed below.

Add a layer mask to the image effect layer. Then we invert the layer mask by pressing the key combination Ctrl + I.

Activate the tool Brush (B rush Tool). The color of the brush is white, the type of brush is standard round.

Using the specified brush, go over the layer mask, revealing those parts of the image where the created effect looks most appropriate.

Step 17

Our cartoon is almost ready. There are final touches left!
Create a merged copy of all layers (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E) and convert it by going to Filter – Convert for smart filters (Filter – Convert for Smart Filter). Name the last layer “Camera Raw Filter”.

Now go back to the menu Filter – Camera raw filters (Filter> Convert for Smart Filter).

All that remains to be done is to make the settings (my settings are listed below).

Congratulations! You did this lesson!

You can open the original photo and view the work you have done. Cartoon ready!

I hope you learned something new from this tutorial and will be able to cheer up many people!
