Challenge gravity in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create conceptually surreal photo manipulation. You will learn the process of creating depth of field with a few tools, learn how to create chiaroscuro to make the background look organic. You will learn how to use textures and how to breathe life into your image, as well as how to impart shades of gloom and mystery to an image using several adjustment layers and lighting effects.

STEP 1 – Create New Document

Create a new document (Ctrl + N) 4500 px in width 4500 px in height and set the background color to white and the resolution value to 300 pixels / inch.

STEP 2

First, open the image with the sand dunes in Photoshop. We use the image with the desert in our composition, therefore, we need to move this image to our document.

Click on the image with the desert, then press the P key to activate the tool. Pen (pen tool), and then create a selection around the desert. Press V to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Holding the highlighted image of the desert with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer “desert”.

STEP 3

Choose a tool Transformation (transform tool) (Ctrl + T), see screenshot below:

STEP 4

Next, open the sky image in Photoshop. We use the image of the sky with clouds in our composition, therefore, we will need to move this image to our document:

Click on the image with the sky, then press the M key to activate the tool. Rectangular area (Rectungular marquee tool), with this tool, create a selection around the sky. Next, press the V key to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Holding the selected sky image with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Sky’:

STEP five

Choose a tool Transformation (transform tool) (Ctrl + T) and turn the square in the circle in the direction of the red arrow.

STEP 6

Next, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

Hold Alt + click between two layers (between the desert layer and the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to create a clipping mask.

STEP 7

Next, select the tool Blur (blur tool (R):

Go through the blur tool on the selected area.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

STEP eight

Create a new layer, fill the new layer with white #ffffff.

Next, go Filter – distortion – Correction Distortion(Filer> Distort> lens correction):

When the window opens Correction of Distortion (Lens Correction), apply the following values:

Vignette (Vignette)

Effect (amount): -100

Mid point (Midpoint): +30

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, change the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), 100% layer opacity:

STEP 9

Create a new layer, name this layer “Light Source”.

Make sure that the brush is active, then click the right mouse button on the document and select the brush shown in the screenshot below:

Apply the brush in the specified area:

Reduce the layer opacity to 65%

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

STEP 10

Next, add an adjustment layer. Colour (solid color), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

Reduce the opacity of the adjustment layer. Colour (solid color) up to 40% and change the blending mode to An exception (exclusion):

Next, add an adjustment layer. Photo Filter (photo filter), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, select the tool Brush (brush tool (B) and paint over the specified area.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Add a new adjustment layer Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Add another adjustment layer. Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

Add a new adjustment layer Color Balance (Color Balance), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following settings:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Add a new adjustment layer Gradient Map (gradient map), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

Apply the following type of gradient:

Change the blending mode for this adjustment layer to Glow (luminosity), 100% layer opacity:

STEP eleven

Next, open the image of Origami Kusudama Starfish in Photoshop. We use the image with origami in our composition, therefore, we will need to move this image to our document:

Click on the image with origami, then press the P key to activate the tool. Pen (pen tool), and then create a selection around the origami. Press V to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Clamping the selected origami image with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Origami’:

STEP 12

Next, activate the tool Transformation (Transform tool (Ctrl + T), next, make sure that the layer with the origami is active, apply scaling, as shown in the screenshot below:

STEP 13

Next, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette.

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), apply the following settings:

Hold Alt + click between two layers (between the origami layer and the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to create a clipping mask.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette.

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Curves (Curves), apply the following settings:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Go to the origami layer and add a new adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color Balance), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Color Balance (Color Balance), apply the following settings:

Next, on the origami layer, apply Overlay options (Blending Options) option External glow(outer glow). You can activate this function in the lower settings palette, the button Add layer style (Add layer style):

When the option settings window appears External glow (outer glow), apply the following values:

STEP 14

Next, open the image with the Steel Ball in Photoshop. We use the image with a steel ball in our composition, therefore, we will need to move this image to our document:

Click on the image with a steel ball, then press the P key to activate the tool. Pen (pen tool), and then create a selection around the steel ball. Press V to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Holding the highlighted image of the steel ball with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Steel Ball’:

STEP 15

Next, activate the tool Transformation (Transform tool (Ctrl + T), make sure that the ‘steel ball’ layer is active, apply scaling as shown in the screenshot below:

STEP sixteen

Choose a tool Eraser (Erase tool (E), set the settings as shown below:

Opacity(Opacity): 100px
Rigidity(Hardness): 0%
Opacity(Opacity): 40%
Pressure(Flow): 100%

Next, go around the specified area with an eraser.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

STEP 17

Next, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Curves (Curves), apply the following settings:

Hold Alt + click between two layers (between the steel ball layer and the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to create a clipping mask.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette.

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), apply the following settings. And then hold down the Alt + key and click between two layers (between the layer with the steel ball and the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to create a clipping mask.

STEP 18

Next, let’s create shadows to our steel ball. Create a new layer, name this layer ‘Shadow from the steel ball’.

Choose a tool Brush (Brush tool (B) with the following settings:

The size brushes(Brush size): 100px
Rigidity(Hardness): 0%
Opacity(Opacity): 40%
Pressure(Flow): 100%
Colour (Color): # 000000

Using a brush, paint over the specified area.

STEP 19

Open the door handle image in Photoshop. We use the image with the door handle in our composition, therefore, we will need to move this image to our document:

Click on the door handle image, then press the P key to activate the tool. Pen (pen tool), and then create a selection around the door handle. Press V to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Clamping the selected image of the door handle with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Mount’:

STEP 20

Next, select the tool Transformation (Transform tool (Ctrl + T), make sure that the ‘Mounting’ layer is active, apply scaling as shown in the screenshot below:

STEP 21

Choose a tool Eraser (Erase tool (E) with the following settings:

The size brushes(Brush size): 100px
Rigidity(Hardness): 0%
Opacity(Opacity): 40%
Pressure(Flow): 100%

Apply the eraser in the specified area.

STEP 22

Go to the layer with the mount, and add a new adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color Balance), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Color Balance (Color Balance), apply the following settings. And then, holding the Alt + key, click between two layers (between the layer with the steel ball and the adjustment layer Color Balance (Color Balance) to create a clipping mask.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, add a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves), this correction can be activated through the lower settings panel in the layers palette:

When the adjustment layer settings window appears Curves (Curves), apply the following settings. And then, holding the Alt + key, click between two layers (between the layer with the steel ball and the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to create a clipping mask.

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Simply duplicate the mount layer (Ctrl + J) and rename it to ори origami mount ’. Apply the same settings that we applied to the mount for the steel ball.

STEP 23

Next, open the PNG image of the Iron Chain in Photoshop. We use an image with an iron chain in our composition, therefore, we will need to move this image to our document:

Click on the image with an iron chain, and then press the V key to activate the tool Moves (Move Tool). Clamping the selected image of the iron chain with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Chain’:

Next, select the tool Transformation (Transform tool (Ctrl + T), make sure the chain layer is active, apply scaling as shown in the screenshot below:

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Duplicate the chain layer several times (Ctrl + J) to create a long chain. See screenshot below.

STEP 24

Now, let’s work on origami. Create a new layer, name this layer “Light”.

Next, select the tool Pen (pen tool (p) and draw a line. See screenshot below:

Next, activate the tool Brush(Brush tool (B) with the following settings:

The size brushes(Brush size): 5px
Rigidity(Hardness): 0%
Opacity(Opacity): 100%
Pressure(Flow): 100%
Colour(Color): #ffffff

Then, select the tool again. Pen (pen tool (P) and right-click on the created line. When the dialog box appears, select the option Outline the contour (Stroke path).

When the window appears Outline the contour (Stroke path), apply the following settings:

Now, once again, right-click on the created contour and in the appeared window select the option Delete contour (Delete path).

The result should be as in the screenshot below:

Next, apply to the created contour Overlay options (Blending options) option External glow (Outer glow).

When the option settings window appears External glow (Outer glow), apply the following settings:

Draw more lines.

STEP 25

Open the image with the Wanderer in Photoshop. We use this image with a wanderer in our composition, therefore, we need to move this image to our document.

Click on the wanderer image, then press the P key to activate the tool. Pen (pen tool), and then create a selection around the man. Press V to activate the tool. Moves (Move Tool). Holding the selected image of the man with the left mouse button, move it to our document. Name this layer ‘Man’:

Next, go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter> Blur> Motion blur):

When the window appears Motion blur (Motion blur), apply the following settings:

Reduce the layer opacity to 65%:

Duplicate the image with a man several times, placing duplicates throughout the desert.
