In this tutorial, we will create an amazing collage in Photoshop with many magical details. You will learn how to create a fire leopard and various interesting effects.
We will begin work with creating the background. First we will do a perspective correction and replace the floor. Next we move on to working with the model and basic details. After that we will create a fire leopard and transfer it to the main document. Finish the work with many details and special effects. The lesson uses version CC 2014, but you can use any other.
Before we start the lesson, download all the resources in one folder.
Create a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl + N) with such parameters:
Let’s start with the background. Through the menu File> Place (File> Place) Insert a photo of the stairs in the castle. In mode Free transform (Ctrl + T) resize and position so that there is symmetry.
Let’s fix the perspective. This tutorial uses Photoshop CC, but if you have an earlier version, then a combination of modes will do. Perspective (Perspective) and Distortion (Distort). We will use the mode Perspective Deformation (Editing> Perspective Deformation) (Edit> Transform Warp).
For users of Perspective Deformation (Transform Warp)
Go to Perspective Deformation. (Editing> Perspective Deformation) (Edit> Transform Warp). Increase the warp mesh slightly so that it extends beyond the canvas. Then on the top panel, click on the button Deformation (Warp). Slide the upper left point slightly up and to the left. Move the right upper point slightly to the left to raise the right side of the image. Lift the lower right point slightly and move it to the left. Try to position the railing, steps and blocks of the building so that they stand exactly.
For users of Perspective modes (Perspective) and Distortion (Distort)
Activate mode Free transform (Ctrl + T), right click on the canvas and select Perspective (Perspective). Slide the upper left point up slightly to align the left side with the right. Move the lower right point down a bit. Do not move points that are in the middle of the sides, otherwise you will ruin everything. For more accurate changes, use the mode Distortion (Distort).
The image is now slightly convex. To fix this, apply the filter Correction distortion (Filter> Correction distortion) (Filter> Lenses Correction). In the tab Custom (Custom) find a section Geometric Distortion. Set the parameter Remove distortion (Remove Distortion) at +7. The filter will increase the depth of the image and align the blocks.
Now we will remove the lower part, where the steps are half visible. Add a mask and select a tool. Brush (Brush Too) (B) and configure it as shown in the screenshot.
On the mask in black paint over the bottom.
Create a copy of the ladder layer. (Ctrl + J) and convert it to a smart object via the context menu. Apply filter Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with a value of 5 pixels. It is very important to create a depth of field. The image will become more realistic if the background is a bit blurred. The main characters of the picture will be a girl and a leopard. Therefore, the lack of separation between the background and the foreground will be incorrect. The viewer’s attention should be directed to the main elements of the scene.
On the filter mask you need to hide the blur in some places. Choose a soft brush of 350 pixels with 100% opacity and paint over the bottom half of the stairs and railings. Then reduce the opacity of the brush to 50% and paint over the middle of the stairs.
Now let’s do the floor. Insert a checkered pattern, zoom it in and rotate 60 degrees.
In mode Distortion (Distort) change the pattern so that it is gender. It is very important to set the perspective correctly so that the floor is not tilted, otherwise realism will be lost. For more interest, the author decided to make the floor diamond-shaped.
Create a copy of the smart blur filter (while Alt, transfer the filter icon to another layer). Double click on the filter name to open the settings. Change the radius to 1.8 pixels. All three layers are combined into one group “Interior” (Ctrl + G).
Next we will create the night. We darken the whole scene with adjustment layers and fill layers. All the following layers should be above the Interior group. Create an adjustment layer Selective color correction (Selective Color): adjust the yellow and blue colors.
Add a blue tone to the light. Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves). You need to configure the channels separately:
Green (Green): Input (Input) – 126, Output (Output) – 130.
Blue: 59/63; 124/132; 182/197.
Create a new fill layer Colour (Solid Color): # 495cbf. Set it to overlay mode. Soft Light and reduce the opacity to 30%.
Now we will highlight the central part of the canvas. Create a new fill layer Gradient (Gradient): mode Soft light (Soft Light), 50% opacity, gradient #ffffff – # 0e1406, style Radial (Radial).
At night, not everything should be blue. Therefore, for the balance, add a correction layer Curves (Curves):
Red (Red): 134/123.
Blue: 56/45, 136/120, 205/196.
Make a fill layer Colour (Solid Color): # 28337a. Set the blending mode Overlap (Overlay) and reduce the opacity to 30%.
Create an adjustment layer Brightness / Contrast (Brightness /Contrast): 3 / 1. This layer is needed to slightly enhance the glow.
Create a new fill layer Gradient (Gradient): mode Soft light (Soft Light), 50% opacity, gradient # b0d7ff – # 183099 – # 0a1026, style Radial (Radial).
Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves). There will be two points on the RGB channel: 146/131 and 255/224.
Create another adjustment layer Curves. Lower the top corner point to 146/113. The whole image will turn dark and you can selectively leave the darkness with a mask. Choose a soft brush of 400 pixels in size with 50% opacity, paint over the center of the canvas.
Create a new layer. (Ctrl + Shift + N): mode Overlap (Overlay), turn on 50% gray. Tool Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) and Clarifier (Dodge Tool) (O) paint over the canvas as shown below.
All adjustment layers put in one group «FX».
Insert the first photo of the model. Reduce the width and increase the height.
Tool Pen (Pen Tool) (P) draw a contour around the edges of the girl. Leave some background around the hair. Transform contour to selection (Ctrl + Enter). Open the panel Refine Edge (Refine Edge) (Ctrl + Alt + R). Select View (View) – On black (On Black), adjust the brush as shown in the screenshot, and remove the remnants of the background behind the hair. Also remove the gray color from the dress.
Add a mask to hide the background. Brush hide the right hand of the girl. We will replace it with a hand from another photo.
Insert another photo of the girl and tilt it. Both layers put in one group «Model». With a mask, leave only your hand.
Create a new layer for the girl, filled with 50% gray. Tools Clarifier (Dodge Tool) (O) and Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) add shadows and light to the girls. Use the same parameters as last time, just change the brush size (100-250 pixels). We make a lighter arm and dress at the back, as the leopard and the book will emit light. Don’t forget to create a clipping mask. (Ctrl + Alt + G).
Create a new layer under the girl group. Select a brush and adjust it as shown below. Draw a shadow under the girl and on her dress.
Insert a book into our document, resize and place it over your hand.
Open the photo of the leopard. Tool Pen (Pen Tool) (P) draw a contour around the edges of the animal. Do not try to accurately highlight its wool, it does not make sense. It will be enough to capture as little of the background as possible.
Open the panel Refine Edge (Refine Edge) (Ctrl + Alt + R). Turn on Smart radius (Smart Radius), set Radius (Radius) 4.2 pixels Move edge (Shift Edge) – 10% and brush on the inner edge of the leopard, not on the remnants of the background. After improving the edges of the selection, add a mask to hide the background. Then create a copy (Ctrl + J).
Turn off all layers except the top layer of the leopard. Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool) (B) and configure it:
Brush Print Form (Brush Tip Shape):
Brush “Dune Grass”
Size (Size): 40 pixels
Intervals (Spacing): 10%
Angle: Depends on the slope of the leopard’s fur
Dynamics of the form (Shape Dynamics):
Size Jitter: 55%
Angle Jitter: 10%
Turn off Color Dynamics (Color Dynamics) and Transfer (Transfer).
On the mask of the leopard layer, brush the grass along the edges.
Discolor leopard top coat (Ctrl + Shift + U). Then apply the correction Levels (Ctrl + L). If you create a fiery effect for another animal, you will have to select other values to increase the contrast. It is necessary to create a strong contrast between white and black. Also remember that the black areas will be the brightest when we add fire. Remove excess layers.
Invert image through adjustment layer Inversion (Invert). Combine the leopard layer with the color inversion layer (Ctrl + E). Go to the channel panel and highlight the RGB channel (while holding Ctrl, click on the layer thumbnail). All white areas will be highlighted. Copy them on a separate layer. (Ctrl + J). Go back to the layers panel and create a new layer, fill it with black color.
Now we paint the leopard. Block the transparency of the layer pixels (click on the chess icon on the layers panel). Choose a soft brush with a size of 150 pixels and add color # fff568 to the body, use the color # faae5d on the outline.
Apply a style to the leopard layer External glow (Outer Glow): Mode – Lightening, Method – Soft.
Enhance contrast and glow with an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels):
Open a photo of fire in Photoshop. Go to the channel panel and highlight the RGB channel. Tool Move (Move Tool) (V) drag the selection to the main document.
Reduce the size of the flame. Tool Move (Move Tool) (V) in combination with the key Alt make many copies of the fire layer. Change the direction, size and shape, fill the entire outline of the leopard. Then merge all the layers (Ctrl + E). Eraser wipe off excess flame.
Add a larger flame to the body of the leopard.
To make the effect more interesting, we add sparks behind the leopard. Insert the image of the sparks and set the blending mode Lighten (Screen). Reduce the size of the layer and create multiple copies for different areas. Use the mask to remove extra sparks. Flame color can be changed using adjustment layers. Color balance (Color Balance), Hue / Saturation (Hue /Saturation) etc.
Turn off the black background layer. All layers of leopard merge into one (Ctrl + E). Highlight the leopard (holding Ctrl, click on the layer thumbnail). Tool Move (Move Tool) (V) transfer the leopard to our main document.
Slightly increase the fire leopard and place it behind the girl’s legs. Set the blending mode Lighten (Screen). Place the leopard layer between the girl’s group and the shadow layer.
Now we will draw the glow and reflection of light on other objects. Create a new layer under the leopard, select a soft brush with a size of 600 pixels with 35% opacity and color # ad5b3d paint the light around the leopard and a little on the steps. Set the blending mode Chromaticity (Color).
From the archive “ryky ___ all_my_photoshop_brushes_by_ryky-d6lsedy” install the file “Aufgenommener Pinsel 2 10”. The size of the brush is 600 pixels, the opacity is 20%. Create a new layer over the leopard and white color draw smoke around it and the girls.
Now let’s work on the girl’s lighting. It is better to do it now, so that later it would be convenient to add other effects. You need to draw light on the girl on different layers, each of which will have its own blending mode.
Create a new layer for the girl group (Ctrl + Alt + G). Choose a soft brush of 250 pixels in size with color # e16640 and paint over the girl’s arm and leg, as shown in the screenshot. Set the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce the opacity to 80%.
Create another layer for the girl and use the color # ffff84 to draw light on the edge of the dress and hand. Set the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce the opacity to 57%.
Now we draw the brightest glow on the girl. Select a brush size of 35 pixels in color with # f1a73c and gently walk around the edges of the dress and legs. Set the blending mode Overlap (Overlay) and reduce the opacity to 36%.
Now draw the light from the book on your hand. Create a new layer and select a 100 pixel brush with the color # 64ccf4. Reduce the layer opacity to 68%. Brush over the edge of the face and arm. Create another layer and paint over the same edge, and additionally hair on the right side and face. Set the blending mode of this layer to Chromaticity (Color).
Let’s do the book itself. Create a new layer with a clipping mask, filled with 50% gray in mode Overlap (Overlay). Tools Clarifier (Dodge Tool) (O) and Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) with the same parameters as in step 12, just change the size to 150 pixels. Add light and shadow to the book. Reduce the layer opacity to 70%.
Create a new layer above the book without a clipping mask. Choose a soft brush of 700 pixels in color with # 4ccafe and draw a large spot on top of the book. Set the blending mode Chromaticity (Color). All further work depends only on you. You can add any effects. The author, for example, decided to add particles. Use the “NagelSeries37-Spots01”, “NagelSeries37-Spots02”, “The Fairy Dust Brush”, “Sampled Brush 1 6?” And “splatter 2” brushes. Brush opacity – 30-100%, colors # 4ccafe and # 97dffe.
For each brush stroke, create a separate layer. In this case, you can control the opacity. Layers can always be merged (Ctrl + E).
Let’s freeze the book. Create two new layers with clipping masks over the book’s shadow layer. Use the Sampled Brush 2 40 brush with a size of 80 pixels and a color # 95a2a8 to draw a pattern on the cover. Reduce the opacity to 40-70%. Blend mode of both layers – Basis lightening (Color Dodge).
Create a new layer under the blue glow layer. Choose a snowflake brush with a size of 30-40 pixels in color # 95a2a8. Color the book’s spine as shown in the screenshot. Set the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light).
Now add sheets of paper in the air. Insert an image with sheets of paper. Reduce their size. Layer with sheets of paper to be placed under the shadow layer of the girl. Create a new “sheets” group for the paper.
Make multiple copies of sheets of paper and scatter them around the scene. Erase the same fragments with a mask so that everything does not look the same.
Insert the image with the sheets of paper again and create multiple copies. Change them so that they fly in the air.
Merge the sheets on one layer and hide the repeating areas with a mask.
Flying sheets of paper convert into a smart object. Then apply the filter Motion blur (Motion Blur).
On the mask of the smart filter, remove the blur from the edges of the paper close to the girl. Use a 150 pixel brush with 40% opacity.
Create a new layer for the paper and fill it with black. Reduce the opacity to 56%.
Follow the previous steps to add large sheets of paper to the foreground. Add a shadow on the edges of this paper. Reduce the opacity of the shadow layer to 62%.
We added all the objects to the scene. In conclusion, we will do color correction. Create a new group “FX” under the group of the book “Book”. Inside, create a new layer and select a soft brush with the color # e8702d. Paint over the first steps and part of the floor on the left side. Change the color to # efec43 and paint over the right side. Set the blending mode Hard light (Hard Light) and reduce the opacity to 23%.
Now do the same for the leopard only. Set the blending mode Overlap (Overlay) and reduce the opacity to 57%.
Create a new layer and color # ce835b to paint over the leopard, a small area around it and sheets of paper. So we create a glow. Set the blending mode Overlap (Overlay).
Let’s go back to the book. Create a new layer and select the “Gras – kort” brush with a size of 175 pixels white. Draw the icicles on the book as shown below. Apply filter Motion blur (Motion Blur): 90 degrees, 40 pixels. Excess erase eraser.
With effects, everything looks much better. We did a good job with light and shadows. They create an atmosphere of mystery of the old castle.
It remains to create only a magic ball. Create a new “Magic ball” group under the paper layer. Inside create a new layer. Choose a tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M) and create a round selection. Fill it with color # 8d8987. Remove selection (Ctrl + D). Create a new layer with a clipping mask for the ball and paint the white dots with the “Sampled Brush 1 6” brush.
Create a new layer for the ball. Fill it with black. Apply filter Clouds (Filter> Rendering> Clouds) (Filter> Render> Clouds), and then Clouds with overlay (Difference Clouds). The texture will become more like a stone. Repeat the filter if you do not like the pattern. Set the blending mode Linear Dodge (Linear Dodge). Create a copy of the layer and add a mask filled with black color to it. Draw the energy lines with white color on the mask.
Make the ball colored. Choose a tool Gradient (Gradient Tool) (G): Radial style. Open up Gradient Editor (Gradient Editor), select From basic to transparent (Foreground to Transparent) and change it. To duplicate the slider, hold down Ctrl. You will have two pairs of colors # 9941c2 and # 691b8d. On a new layer, draw a gradient from the center of the ball. Set the blending mode Blackout base (Color Burn).
Create a gradient copy and change the blending mode to Spot light (Pin Light). Choose a 500px brush with the color # be5efa and create a glow on the new layer. Set the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce the opacity to 54%.
Create a gradient copy and change the blending mode to Spot light (Pin Light).
Special brushes draw the energy lines emanating from the ball. For each brush should be a separate layer. Reduce the opacity to make the effect more realistic.
Let’s go to the background of ghosts. Open the image in Photoshop and select one of them with the tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) (L). Transfer the silhouette to our document with the tool. Move (Move Tool) (V).
Insert more ghosts, resize them and place in different places. Merge the layers of ghosts (Ctrl + E). Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur) with a value of 5 pixels. This is necessary in order to bring the ghosts out of focus. Try blending mode Lighten (Screen), You might like the result.
Create two new layers: the first one over the ghosts, and the second one inside the FX group. Select the “Aufgenommener Pinsel 2 10” brush with a size of 1000 pixels and 45% opacity in black. Draw a fog over the ghosts and darken the top of the wall in the background. Reduce the opacity of the second layer to 35%.
We finished the job! The picture is ready and you can relax. I hope you have not been bored throughout the lesson, and you have learned a lot.
