Cheshire Cat in Photoshop

Filter palette Plastics (Liquify) provides all types of image deformation: you can twist and shift certain areas with the tool Deformation (Warp) with the tool Bloating (Bloat) expand them as if they were inflated, or flatten these areas using a tool Shrinkage (Pucker).

Like other Photoshop program filters, filter tools Plastics (Liquify) better to use in small quantities. However, in this tutorial, Sasso (Sasso) covers all settings and focuses on creating destructive and distorting filter effects. Plastics (Liquify).

Step 1. Create a new A4-size document in Photoshop, then place a suitable photo of a cat in it – it is very important that it be in a pose similar to that presented, so that its face is clearly visible, you also need to remove the background. The image that was used for this tutorial was bought on Shutterstock.

Note translator: To create an A4 document, it is necessary in the Create New Document window in the Settings parameter (Preset) select International Paper Size (International paper), and then in the Size drop-down menu (Size) select A4 format. You can also simply enter the Width in the parameters (Width) and Height (Height) enter the values 21cm and 29.7cm respectively (this is the size of the format A4 in centimeters).

Step 2. Now let’s deform the cat to make it cartoonish. To do this, go to the menu Filter – Plastic (Filter – Liquify). In this palette, take the tool Bloat (Bloat)B) to widen eyes, then instrument Deformation (Forward Warp) (W) to move the areas around: lower your ears lower and stretch your mouth, thus preparing it for large teeth, which we insert later. Play with the sizes brushes (brush),density (density) and by pushing (pressure) these tools for better results.

Note translator: More illustrative examples of the operation of the tools of the Plastic filter (Liquify) can be found in the video lesson of Evgeny Kartashov “The secrets of the Plastic filter (Liquify)”, it is located in The secret section of the site.

Step 3. Go to menu Layer (Layer) – New Adjustment Layer (New Adjustment Layer) – Hue / Saturation. Place this layer above the cat layer in the layers palette. Select Layer (Layer) – Create clipping mask (Create clipping mask). When you create a clipping mask, it sees only the layer below, in this case the layer with the cat. So tick the option Toning (Colorize), and then install Hue at 235 Saturation at 23 and Brightness (Lightness) at -15.

Step 4. Select again Layer (Layer) – New Adjustment Layer (New Adjustment Layer) – Hue / Saturation, then go to menu Layer (Layer) – Create clipping mask (Create clipping mask). Place this adjustment layer above the previous one. Change value Color tone (Hue) at 85, Saturation (Saturation) by 60 and Brightness (Lightness) at -35. This will give the plots a green color.

Step 5. Using the tool Fill (Paint Bucket) (G), select layer mask Hue / Saturation in the layers palette. It was white, so fill it with black to hide the green. Choose soft Brush (Brush) white and paint her eyes, and create green stripes on the cat’s fur.

Step 6. Now go to menu Layer (Layer) – New Adjustment Layer (New Adjustment Layer) – Gradient map (Gradient map). This layer should be placed above all adjustment layers, create again Create clipping mask. Install Blending mode (blending mode) on Soft light.

Note translator: Unfortunately, the author did not indicate which Gradient map he used, but you can experiment here. Your task is to make the cat’s colors more vivid and deep. I liked the effect after applying the Gradient Map (Gradient map) with colors from #172236 to #ffffff.

Step 7. Now add some teeth. To get a suitable threatening look, I used the image of a crocodile, again from the Shutterstock site. Then, using the tool Lasso (Lasso), select the crocodile’s mouth and copy it.

Note translator: To copy the selected area to a new layer, simply use the keyboard shortcutCmd /Ctrl +J.

Step 8. Insert your teeth in a document with a cat and place them in the appropriate place. To correct the shape of the teeth in the shape of the cat’s mouth, use the tool again. Deformation (Forward Warp) (W) filter Plastic (Liquify). After that, duplicate the layer and flush your teeth horizontally to create a mouth.

Note translator: To insert a necessary object from another document, you must first select it, then press the key combination Cmd /Ctrl +C to copy the selected area, then open the main document and press the key combination Cmd /Ctrl +V to insert the selection into this document.

Step 9. Add a new layer above the layers with the teeth and with the tool. Brush (Brush) (B) with soft black edges, paint over the edges of your mouth to create shade and imaginary depth. Use Blending mode (Multiply).

Step 10. Now add the trunk on which the cat lies. The image I used is taken from Shutterstock. Expand it and try to position the branch at a more suitable angle. Also use the tool Twist Colockwise (C) filter Liquify, to deform some branches of the tree and create some spirals.

Step 11. Add more sprigs to the background and apply Gaussian Blur with a radius of 15px, then insert a photo of the sky. The one I used is taken from Shutterstock.

Step 12. Select the image with the sky and place it under all layers in the layers palette. Layer (Layer) must still be selected. Now go to menu Image (Image) – Correction (Adjustments) – Brightness (Brightness) / Contrast (Contrast). Decrease Brightness to -135 and increase Contrast up to 100. After that go to menu Image (Image) – Correction (Adjustments) – Hue / Saturation. Activate the parameter Toning (Colorize), then increase Hue to a value of 262, change Saturation by 43 and Brightness (Lightness) at -15. This will give the background a purple color.

Step 13. Select all layers and duplicate them. While all copies of the layers are highlighted, go to the menu Layer (Layer) – Merge layers (Merge Layers) (Cmd / Ctrl + Opt / Alt + Shift + E). Select the merged layer and go to the menu Filter – Blur (Blur) – Gaussian Blur. Set the parameter value Radius 20 pixels. and change Blending mode (blending mode) on Lightening / Shielding (Screen). The whole image will begin to shine. Then take the tool Eraser (Eraser) (E) and erase everything except the brightly lit face of the cat.

Note translator: To select all layers, hold down Shift, then, without releasing it, click on the bottommost layer once and once on the layer that is at the top. Press the key combination Ctrl +J to duplicate selected layers and Ctrl +E to merge them into one layer.

Step 14.Add another layer and using the tool Brush (Brush) (B) add a vignette to complete the work. You can also brighten the eyes by duplicating the blurred layer and changing it. Blending mode (blending mode) on Lightening / Shielding (Screen).

Note translator: Vignette can also be made using the Distortion Correction filter (Lenses Correction) by playing with the Vignette slider (Vignette).
