In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a battle scene with a warrior in Photoshop. This is a lesson of medium difficulty, and some steps may be difficult, but why not try it!
The creation of this lesson was inspired by the video game “Destiny”.
This lesson is done in Photoshop CS6 – so some screenshots may differ slightly from previous versions of the program. Some brushes are only available in Photoshop CS6.
The final result:
Step 1
Create a new document with the following dimensions 1440 px x 867 px, the background color is black. Open the original texture of stone 1 in Photoshop. Select only part of the stone texture, which is shown in the screenshot below. We use this piece of stone to create land for our scene:
Step 2
Copy / paste (Copy / Paste) selected fragment of stone texture on our working paper. Using a soft eraser, create a shading on the edges to match the texture of the stone with the background:
To the stone texture fragment layer, add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask.
Black-white (Black and White)
Levels (Levels)
The result of the current lesson:
Using the Clouds brush or the Clouds filter, add a cloud effect to the entire scene, in particular where the warrior will be located, as well as at the location of the building:
Step 3
Open the original image of the warrior in Photoshop. Cut out the image of the warrior, and then add to our working paper, placing the warrior as shown in the screenshot below.
Add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask to the warrior layer.
Black-white (Black and White)
Switch to the adjustment layer mask Black and white (Black and White) and with the help of a soft black brush hide the effect of correction on the image of the warrior in the areas that are highlighted in the screenshot below. Thus, we will prepare the image of the warrior before adding the effects of fire in further steps:
Levels (Levels)
Switch to the adjustment layer mask Levels (Levels) and with the help of a soft black brush hide the effect of the levels on the areas that are highlighted in the screenshot below.
Using a soft round brush and tool Deformation (Warp tool) create a curved flare over the ax image:
The result of the current lesson:
Step 4
Next, we will add an image of the building to our scene. Open the original building image in Photoshop. Highlight the following fragment of the building, which is shown in the screenshot below:
Copy / paste the selection of the building into our working paper. Place the building to the left of the warrior, as shown in the screenshot below.
Using the Crack brush, add a crack / crack effect to the wall of the building:
Add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask to the building fragment layer.
Black-white (Black and White)
Levels (Levels)
Curves (Curves)
The result of the current lesson:
Group all the layers related to the building into one group. Duplicate the layer with this group, and then press the keys (Ctrl + T) to activate the transformation, then right-click on the transformation area and in the appeared window select the option Flip horizontally (Flip Horizontal) to reflect the duplicate of the building horizontally:
Move the duplicate image of the building to the right side of the scene, as shown in the screenshot below:
Using a soft eraser, hide a fragment of the building, which is located on the right, so that it is different from the building on the left:
Step 5
Open the original texture of stone 2 in Photoshop. Select only the upper part of the stone texture, which is shown in the screenshot below:
Add the selection of the stone texture to our working paper. Using tool Free transformation (free transform tool), rotate a piece of stone, and then use a soft eraser to create a shading on the edges of the stone to combine it with the ground and the building:
To the stone fragment layer, add the following adjustment layers as a clipping mask.
Black-white (Black and White)
Levels (Levels)
Switch to the adjustment layer mask Levels (Levels) and with the help of a soft black brush hide the effect of the levels on the part of the image that is highlighted in the screenshot below.
Group all the layers related to the stone fragment, duplicate the new group. Flip horizontally duplicate the group layer. Move the duplicate group with a stone to the right side of the scene:
Step 6
Next, we will add to the partner warrior. Open the original wolf image in Photoshop. Highlight the wolf image and then copy / paste (copy / paste) selected image of the wolf on our working paper, located on the stone to the left.
To the wolf layer, add the next adjustment layer as a clipping mask.
Black-white (Black and White)
Levels (Levels)
The result of the current lesson:
Step 7
In this step, we will add a fire effect to our scene. Select the following piece of fire:
Add fire effects to the image of the warrior and the ax, and then use the tool Free transformation (free transform tool) adjust the shape of the fire.
Repeat the process of adding the effect of fire, add the effects of fire on the image of the building, which is located on the right. Create a feeling as if a flame of fire burst from a window.
Step 8
I decided to add the effect of small fragments flying throughout the scene. Using the Particle brush, add the particle effect as shown in the screenshot below:
For particles drawn, apply a filter Motion blur (Motion blur filter). Set the following filter settings, which are shown in the screenshot below:
The result that you should get:
Repeat the whole process, add more particles to the whole scene:
Step 9
In this last step, I decided to give the whole picture a “faded” effect. Create a merged layer from all visible layers (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E), then duplicate the merged layer. To duplicate the merged layer, apply a filter Edge emphasis (Accented Edges):
Now add a layer mask to the duplicate of the merged layer to hide the effect of the Accented Edges filter on the areas that are highlighted in the screenshot below:
Result at the moment lesson.
Next, I applied several adjustment layers to add colors to our picture. You can see the final result in the screenshot below:
So, we have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. See you, have a nice day!
