Weddings are a magical time of love and romance – celebrate a new chapter of your life with the creation of creative photo manipulation!
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create beautiful wedding photo manipulation in Adobe Photoshop. To begin with, we will put together something like a scene map, using mostly free stock images, and then we will tweak the clothes to fit the topic better.
Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative font for the lesson.
Wedding inspiration and themes
We will create this cool photo manipulation from the free images shown below. You can use your own pictures if you want to make a cute project or make this work as a gift.
Since the wedding is a special event in the life of everyone, I wanted to portray this theme as ideal as in the pictures. For this, I just change the colors of the dress to the traditional wedding and create a fabulous mountain landscape for a spectacular effect.
Many creative couples prefer to celebrate this event, adding something new and unique to it. You can search for inspiration for this topic on Pinterest or Google by searching for “creative engagement photos” or “unique wedding photo ideas” (“original ideas for a wedding photo shoot”).
1. How to create a mountain landscape
Create a new document. The size of my work is 1424 x 1920 pixels.
Copy and paste the image of the mountain landscape on a new layer. Adjust the size with the command FreeTransform (Free Transform) (Control-T) so that the image is slightly smaller. This will help us create additional depth.
Place the image in the document as shown below.
Continue to create a landscape!
Now we need the lower part. Copy and paste another part of the mountain landscape onto the second new layer below the first one. For this step you can use tools for quick selection, like Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L).
Select the lower left, as we will create a small path leading to the pair.
Select another area on the original photo, namely the lower sand part – it will help us to create a path leading to the center.
Copy and paste it on a new layer under the layer with the mountain.
Now add a layer mask to the layers with the mountain and the path, if needed. Hide the hard edges on each layer, painting with black on the mask with a soft round brush (Hardness (hardness) 0%, Opacity (opacity) 100%).
See the horses in the background? They make the image a bit overloaded, so let’s remove them!
To hide the horses, we will use fragments of the landscape, located nearby, and hide them under the grass and earth. To do this, first you need to select an area using the tool Lasso (Lasso) (L), and then copy and paste it on a new layer above the layer with the mountain.
Place the grass on top of the horse to hide it. Use layer masks to fix all hard edges.
Hide all the horses. The result should be approximately the same as in the image below.
Bye, bye, horses!
When done, select all the layers with the landscape, right-click and merge them.
Let’s enhance the effect of depth of field. By doing this, we will draw more attention to the pair when we add it.
Select a layer with a mountain. Highlight an area with the sky using tools. Magnetic (Magnetic) and Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L).
Next, click Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur), change the parameter Radius (Radius) by 5 pixels to create blur.
Enhance the blur.
Add blur Tilt shift (Tilt-offset). Being on a layer with a mountain, click Filter> Blur Gallery> Tilt-Shift (Filter> Blur Gallery> Tilt-Offset). Create an effect like the image below.
Change the parameter Blur (Blur) by 15 pixels and click OK.
2. How to create wedding dresses
Before we change the landscape even more, you should add a couple and wedding details!
Select the area around the pair with the tool. Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L). Don’t worry about the edges – we will correct them in the next step.
Copy and paste the pair on a new layer above the layer with the blurred mountain. Adjust their size with the function Free transform (Free Transform) (Control-T) and place them in the center of the composition.
Add a layer mask to the layer with a pair.
With a hard round brush (Hardness (hardness) 100%, Opacity (opacity) 100%) draw black on the layer mask to hide the extra areas left from the original image.
Do not forget to also remove the gaps between their hands and feet!
Continue to work on the edges until you achieve a result, something like the image below.
Let’s go to outfits! I love being a stylist!
Of course, wedding colors vary in different countries and cultures, but to make it obvious that the traditional wedding is depicted on the manipulation, we will create a black suit and a white bridal dress.
- With the tool Polygonal lasso (Polygonal lasso) (L) Highlight the area around the dress. Then, hold down the Shift key to add another area to this area – around purple roses. We will repaint them too!
- Now click Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue and Saturation (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue / Saturation). Change the parameter values to the following to make the dress white. Then click on the layer with the right mouse button to cut the adjustment layer on the previous one.
Parameter values Hue (Color tone) and Saturation (Saturation):
- Hue (Color tone): -19
- Saturation (Saturation): -61
- Lightness (Brightness): +18
Do the same with the young man’s suit to make it black.
Create a second adjustment layer. Hue and saturation (Hue / Saturation) and also trim it over the layer with a pair using a clipping mask. Be sure to select the costume before adding a correction layer to change the colors you want.
Change parameter values Hue (Color tone) and Saturation (Saturation) to the following:
- Hue (Color tone): 0
- Saturation (Saturation): -100
- Lightness (Brightness): -27
This is the result at this stage! What a lovely couple!
You can edit layer masks even more. Important areas such as skin or hair should not be repainted, so you should hide the effect in these places.
Let’s change the color of the pair even more, because now they look a bit gray.
Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and trim it over the layer with a pair using a clipping mask.
Adjust the curves in the channels Rgb and Blue (Blue) as shown below to improve contrast and color.
Then, change the layer blending mode to Hard light (Hard light) and lower it Opacity (opacity) up to 50%.
Next, we will repaint a couple a little to match it with the landscape. Create an adjustment layer Color lookup (Search for color) and trim it over the layer with a pair using a clipping mask.
Change the 3DLUT file to FallColors.look.
Before we get to the veil, let’s enhance the colors of the portrait.
Create an adjustment layer Color lookup (Search color) on top of all other layers.
Change the 3DLUT file to Filmstock_50.3dl, and then change the blending mode to Lighter color (Lighter) and lower Opacity (opacity) up to 68%.
To create such a veil, we need two pictures – Veil 1 and Veil 2.
1. Select the first veil with the tool. Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L). Copy and paste it on a new layer, above the adjustment layer. Color lookup (Search color). Reflect the veil by clicking Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal (Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontally).
2. Adjust the size relative to the bride using the command Free transform (Free Transform) (Control-T) and then add a layer mask to correct the edges of the veil.
To achieve the soaring effect, let’s add a second veil!
Using the same methods as before, separate the veil from the photo, put it into a working document, then reflect it and adjust the size to fit the bride.
Place the second veil over the first one, and then create an adjustment layer. Hue and saturation (Hue / Saturation) and cut it over the veil layer using a clipping mask to change its color to white.
Change parameter values Hue (Color tone) and Saturation (Saturation) to the following:
- Hue (Color tone): 0
- Saturation (Saturation): -97
- Lightness (Brightness): -0
Let’s increase the contrast of the veil.
Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and cut it over the layer with the veil using a clipping mask. Change the position of the channel curve Rgb, as shown below to enhance the contrast.
This is how our wonderful couple looks like now!
3. How to adjust colors
Almost all the main components of our manipulation on the spot!
So now we will need to add a couple of adjustment layers in order to improve the color scheme of the image.
Let’s start with the mountain.
Create a new layer and cut it over the mountain layer with a clipping mask.
Using a soft round brush (stiffness 0%, opacity 70-90%), paint in green # 184d0e at the bottom of the grass patch.
Change the blending mode to Multiply (Multiply) and lower the opacity to 10%.
Create another new layer above it and trim it over the mountain layer with a clipping mask.
I try to separate the grass in the foreground and background, playing with the light.
Now using a rigid round brush (stiffness 100%, opacity 100%) draw a light green color # b9b522 on the background grass. Then change the blending mode of the layer to Soft light (Soft light).
Create two new adjustment layers and cut them around the mountain with a clipping mask.
Select a mountain with the tool Polygonal lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L). Next, click Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Gradient Map).
Create a gradient from green # 22847e to light green # 82b5a6. Then change the blending mode of the layer to Multiply (Multiplication), and Opacity (opacity) – 70%.
Now create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color Balance) and trim it over the layer with the mountain using a clipping mask.
Change the values in Midtones (Mid Tones) and Highlights (Light) on the following:
- Midtones(Mid Tones): +2, 0, -55
- Highlights(Light): + 13, -16, -77
Scatter the sky by adding a bit of white.
Create a new layer and cut it over the layer with the mountain using a clipping mask, and then, using a soft round brush (hardness 0%, opacity 10-20%), draw a soft white color on the sky. If necessary, change the opacity of the layer.
Make sure the brush touches the edges of the cliff, creating a slight fading effect.
Create a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) above the layer with the mountain. It should not be cut on the previous layer.
Change the position of the RGB channel curve as shown below. The effect is very light, but extremely necessary in order to soften the saturation of colors.
4. How to complete the manipulation
Almost all! Get ready to catch a bouquet!
The last steps will contain mostly adjustment layers and small details. Let’s try to finish quickly.
Create a new adjustment layer. Color balance (Color balance) on top of all other layers.
- Midtones(Mid Tones): +14, -3, +6
- Highlights(Sveta): -1, -19, -10
And then lower the layer opacity to 60%.
Now add a new adjustment layer. Color lookup (Search color).
Change the 3DLUT file to 3Strip.look.
Add another adjustment layer. Color balance (Color balance).
Change parameters in Shadows (Shadows) at -50, 0 +1.
With the tool Paint bucket (Fill) (G) Fill a new layer created on top of all other layers in pink color # f2adaf.
Change the layer’s overlay mode to Hue (Color tone) and lower it Opacity (opacity) up to 25%.
Time to make the landscape shine!
Create a new layer on top of all the others and change its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap).
Using a hard round brush (hardness 100%, opacity 10-30%), paint highlights on the grass against the background leading to the foreground.
Follow the direction of the light, it falls to the left. Also draw light and on the dress, bouquet and suit of the groom.
We continue to strengthen the parity of the image.
Create two new layers for light and correction. Use a soft round brush to paint in white at the top to further diffuse the light.
Then, using a stiff round brush, paint the bride’s dress in pure white, creating clear edges around the skirt and veils.
Adjust the opacity of the layers if necessary. Below you see before and after:
Add a little green!
Copy and paste a pair of photos on top of your composition. Add a layer mask and hide everything except the lower parts with grass, as rolled in the image below.
Then create a new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) and trim it over the layer with a pair using a clipping mask to improve the contrast.
You may need to draw more grass so that the landscape is balanced. Do this with a hard round brush and yellow color # f9f9da. Short curved lines are fine.
Continue to work on the grass, adding color layers if necessary. Draw directly on these areas with a round rigid brush with very low opacity (5-15%), and with the tool Eyedropper (Eyedropper) (E) Choose the closest color for an example.
Do not forget to add a faint shadow under the bride and groom! Draw a soft dark green under the pair, following the direction of light.
Now enhance clarity with a new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) on top of all others.
Finish by creating a new adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient map). Change the gradient to inline Pink, Yellow and Green (Pink, yellow, green).
Then change the blending mode to Color (Chroma) and lower Opacity (opacity) up to 17%.
5. How to add Text and Special Effects
To make this manipulation even more special, just add text!
Here, to create text for our couple at the bottom of the image, I used the font Salbatora Script.
The inscription on the photo: Wedding tale Bao and Lynn
Alternatively, you can apply to the work of “radiant” action (for a fee). First, save the finished manipulation, and then you can play with the action, enjoying the beautiful bokeh effect.
Below you can see the final result!
All is ready! Great Job!
Here comes the bride …
I hear wedding bells! I congratulate you on creating a beautiful wedding manipulation inspired by love and romance. Take your time and enjoy the creation of this beautiful work.
