Create a colorful photo manipulation in Photoshop

In this lesson, I will show you how to create a fantastic, heavenly scene with a beautiful girl who dreams. You will learn how to work with colors, applying adjustment layers, coloring, texturing, learn how to work with light effects and much more.

What will you create?

We will begin this lesson by creating a beautiful scene with a lake using a stock image with the sky. Then we add a foggy texture, thus enhancing the fantastic effect for the scene. Later we will add clouds, a paper boat, a model, a lock, we will apply a composition to the composition and apply adjustment layers, masks and coloring to them. Then we apply color and light and a few images with hazy textures. At the end, apply a correction layer to give the composition a final look.

Press Ctrl + J to duplicate this layer. Go to menu Edit-> Transform-> Flip Vertical (Edit-> Transform-> Flip Vertically). Shift the duplicate down, placing it under the original layer.

Go to menu Filter-> Blur-> Motion Blur (Filter-> Blur-> Blur in motion) and specify the following settings.

Name this layer “Lake”.

Step 4

To add blue and red hues to the scene, add an adjustment layer. Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance (Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Color Balance).

Step 5

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to add a beautiful blue hue.

Step 6

To change the contrast of the picture, add a correction layer. Levels (Levels).

Take a soft black brush with Opacity (Opacity) 20-25% and on the mask of the adjustment layer Levels (Levels) process the right and center of the image. Below you can see the result of the mask processing.

Step 7

To create more light in the sky, take a soft brush with color #f9e398, and paint over the right side of the horizon. Then change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with Opacity (Opacity) 100%.

At the bottom of the layers palette, click on the second icon Add layer mask (Add layer mask), thus creating a mask for the active layer. Then, using a soft black brush, process the surface of the mask, thus reducing the light effect, as shown in the image below.

Step 8

Place Nebula 1 on your work canvas and change the blending mode to HardLight (Hard light).

Add a mask to this layer. Using a soft brush, process the selected area in the image below, thus reducing the nebula effect on the lake and in the sky.

Step 9

Duplicate this layer, flip the duplicate vertically and move it down to create the reflection effect of the nebula:

Apply to this layer Motion blur (Motion blur).

Step 10

Select the Nebula 1 layer and its reflection on the layers palette. Then merge them into one group Ctrl + G. Set the blending mode for this group. HardLight (Hard light) with Opacity (Opacity) 100%. Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) on top of all layers in this group to change the colors of the nebula:

Step 11

Add adjustment layer Color balance (Color balance) to make this effect even more saturated.

Step 12

Create a new layer above the Nebula 1 group. Choose one of the cloud brushes (1252). Set color #fcf5db, and draw a cloud in the middle of the lake.

Step 13

Duplicate this layer, move the duplicate down, and flip it vertically, creating a reflection of the cloud. Decrease Opacity (Opacity) layer with reflection up to 50%.

Create a mask and hide the upper part of the reflection. Then apply Motion blur (Motion blur).

Step 14

Add another cloud using brush 1369, placing it to the right of the previous one.

Create a reflection of this cloud in the same way as for the first cloud.

Step 15

Draw two more clouds to the left of the first one and create their reflection.

Step 16

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask to slightly darken the surface of the clouds.

On the correction layer mask Curves (Curves) Using a soft brush, erase the top of the cloud to make the top of the cloud a little darker than the bottom.

Step 17

Merge all layers with clouds and their reflections into one group. Set the blending mode for this group. Normal (Normal) with Opacity (Opacity) 100%. Add adjustment layer Selective color (Selective color correction) to give the clouds a bit of yellow.

On the mask of this layer, use a soft brush to reduce the yellowish effect on the cloud from the left edge of the scene.

Step 18

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken and change the color of the clouds.

Mask part of the effect of the correction curves, denoting the highlighted areas on the surface of the clouds. The following shows the state of the mask and the result on the image itself.

Step 19

Open the “Paper ship” stock image and separate it from the background.

Create a new layer, take the tool Clone stamp (Stamp). Use this tool to remove the remaining area of water.

Step 20

Hide the background layer. Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E to merge the ship layer and the layer processed Clone stamp ( Stamp). Take the tool Lasso Tool (Lasso) and select the bottom of the boat. Then click on the selected area with the right mouse button and select the item in the opened context menu Layer via Cut (Cut to a new layer).

Use Free Transform (Ctrl + T) to adjust the bottom of the boat to fit the top, as shown in the image below:

Merge all visible layers.

Step 21

Place the merged ship layer in your working paper, and place it in the cloud region on the right side of the scene. Place this layer under the cloud group.

Create a reflection of this boat, just like for other elements.

Step 22

Combine the layer with the ship and its reflection into one group. Add adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to slightly reduce the saturation of the boat.

Step 23

Add some bright colors to the ship using the correction layer. Color balance (Color balance).

Step 24

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to make the boat a little brighter.

On the mask of the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) erase the bottom of the boat, as it should remain slightly darker than the top.

Step 25

Open stock image with model. Separate it from the background in any way you know.

Create a new layer and using Clone stamp (Stamp) remove the tattoo and branches on her legs.

Step 26

Create a new layer. Choose a tool Brush (Brush) and set the color #989079. Press (F5) to open the brush palette and adjust the brush as follows.

Combine the layers with the stamped model and the layers on which hair was added into one layer.

Step 27

Place the model on the largest cloud (in the center).

Using a layer mask and cloud brushes, blur the transition between the model’s legs and the cloud.

Step 28

Create a reflection of the model, as is done for other elements.

Step 29

Group the layer with the model and its reflection. Apply a correction layer to this group. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), reducing the available reddish hues.

Step 30

Create an adjustment layer Color balance (Color Balance) to add models a little yellow hues.

Step 31

Add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken the front of the model, then erase the rest of the area, leaving it lit:

Step 32

To add a little light reflected from the model, create a new layer and use a soft brush with color #ecc886 paint her right side. Then set the blending mode for this layer. Overlay (Overlap).

Step 33

Separate the castle from the background and position it on the left cloud. Select cloud brush 1369 and blur the transition between the castle and the cloud.

Step 34

Create a reflection of this castle, as they did with other elements.

Step 35

Now back to the cloud group. Highlight the mask mentioned in the previous cloud reflection step. Then select the cloud brush used in the previous step to mask the lock, open the brush palette (F5) and reflect its position.

Paint over the top of the reflection to create a similarity between this cloud and its reflection on the water surface.

Step 35

Combine the layer with the lock and its reflection into a separate group. Apply adjustment layer Color balance (Color Balance) to add some warm colors here.

Step 36

Apply adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken the castle and its reflection a little.

Step 37

To change the contrast of the entire scene, create a new layer on top of all layers. Choose a tool Gradient tool (Gradient), specify a radial gradient type with default colors (black and white). Change the blending mode to Soft light (Soft light) with Opacity (Opacity) 100%.

Create a mask for this layer and adjust the contrast in some areas.

Step 38

Choose a soft brush with color #ecc886 and paint with it the surface of the model and its reflection, thus creating a kind of glow. Set blending mode for this layer. Overlay (Overlap) with Opacity (Opacity) 70%.

Step 39

Choose a soft brush with Opacity (Opacity) is about 20-25%, and reduce the redness at the top of the image with it.

Step 40

Add adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to turn the color of some glowing dots to blue.

Erase the upper area of the image so that the glow in it remains the same color as before applying the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 41

Duplicate this layer and move the duplicate down a bit. Create a mask for it and blur the visible border between the two layers.

Step 42

Duplicate this layer again, move the duplicate to the upper right corner of the canvas and then erase it carefully.

Add a correction layer Levels (Levels) to reduce the saturation of this part.

On the layer mask, wipe off some glowing points with a soft brush.

Step 43

Add the same texture near the paper boat.

Add a correction layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to convert the color to bright yellow.

Step 44

Place the image “Nebula 2” as shown in the image below. Go to menu Edit-> Transform-> Warp (Edit-> Transform-> Warp), and give this image the following shape.

Change the blending mode Screen (Screen), and with a mask, blur the sharp edges.
