Create a cyborg in the style of Sci-Fi

Cyborgs by their nature impress the viewer more than any other robots and synthetic humanoids. The combination of metal and flesh in films such as Terminator or Star Trek creates more awesome images than replicants from Blade Runner. In this tutorial, Fabio Sasso will show you how to create a cyborg in Photoshop from multiple photos.

Final result:

Step 1

Create a new A4 document in portrait orientation in Photoshop. Insert a photo of the model from which to make a cyborg. Name the layer “HeadShoulders”. Best of all for our lesson fit model photo with bright light and strong shadows. The photo used in the lesson can be downloaded here.

Step 2

Choose a tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) (L) and highlight the face. Cut the selected area on a separate layer through the menu Layer> New> Cut to New Layer (Layer> New> Layer via Cut). Name the new layer “Face” and move it aside. This layer can be turned off, as long as we do not need it.

Step 3

Apply a style to the “HeadShoulders” layer. Casting a shadow (Drop Shadow) via the fx icon at the bottom of the layers panel. Select blend mode Multiplication (Multiply), the remaining settings are shown in the screenshot.

Step 4

In the same window, select the style Stamping (Bevel Emboss) and configure it like this:

Style (Style): Inner Bevel (Inner Bevel)
Method (Technique): Smooth (Smooth)
Depth: 241%
Size (Size): 10 pixels
Smooth: 16 pixels
Angle: 90 degrees
Altitude: 21 degrees
Highlight Mode (Highlight Mode): Lighter (Lighter Color), white color
Shadow mode (Shadow Mode): Linear dimmer (Linear Burn), 60% opacity, black color

Step 5

Insert an image of a metal skull and name the layer “Skull”. Drop its layer under the face layer. Then create a new layer and fill it with black. Set the blending mode of this layer to Lightening (Screen). Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool) (B) and brush over your teeth to make them white.

Step 6

On the skull layer, go to Level correction (Ctrl + L). A bright spot will appear on the forehead. To remove it, create a new layer “Gray” and work with a gray brush (define it on the skull).

Step 7

In place of the nose, insert the grille with a fan that can be taken from a photo of the computer’s power supply. Name the layer “Fan” and tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) (L) hide part of the grid. To the “Fan” layer apply the Levels correction (Ctrl + L): 25 / 0.95 / 176. If necessary, darken the grid more with a black brush.

Step 8

In place of the eye, put part of the webcam. Her image can be downloaded here.

Step 9

Create a new layer and fill it with black. Set the blending mode Lightening (Screen). Choose a soft brush and paint red spots on the eyes.

Step 10

Turn on the Face layer and apply a style to it. Casting a shadow (Drop Shadow): brown color. Then apply the style Stamping (Bevel Emboss). The style settings are the same as last time.

Step 11

Create an adjustment layer Photo filter (Photo Filter).

Step 12

Create an adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to reduce color saturation. Then create an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map): black and white gradient. Set the blending mode of this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).

Step 13

Create a new layer at the top and fill it with color # 12497c. Reduce the opacity to 60% and set the blending mode Soft light (Soft Light). Then create another layer, fill it with color. # 257940 and set the same blending mode and opacity.

Step 14

Now we will create easy vignetting. Create a new layer and fill it with black. Set the blending mode Multiplication (Multiply), select a large soft brush and white paint over everything except the edges of the canvas.

Step 15

In conclusion, we will increase the Glow effect. Merge all layers into one separate (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E). Apply filter Gaussian blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with a value of 20 pixels. Set the blending mode Lightening (Screen) and reduce the opacity to 80%.
