Create a dramatic night scene in Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will use Adobe Photoshop to create a dramatic night scene. You will learn how to combine several stock images into one scene, increase the depth, add rain using a special rain brush, how to draw drops, as well as make a dramatic light and color and much more.

This is what we end up with:

1. How to create a basic environment

Step 1

Create a new document of 2000 x 1231 pixels in Photoshop with the specified settings:

Step 2

Open the street image 1. Drag this image into the main document using the tool Move Tool (Move) (V). Place it on the left half of the canvas.

Step 3

Go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) and set the blur radius to 7 pixels. This step should add some depth to our scene.

Step 4

Go to Layer > NewAdjustmentLayer > Curves (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Curves) and set it as ClippingMask(Clipping mask). Decrease the brightness, and then activate the tool on this layer mask. Brush tool (Brush) (B) and select a soft round brush of black color. Use this brush to erase the middle of the street, especially the ground and parts that also belong to the light.

Step 5

We need to reduce the light of the lamps, so create a new layer and use a soft brush with color # 625448 and an opacity of about 30-35%, and then dim the light around the lamps.

Step 6

Create a new layer, change the mode to Overlay(Overlap) 100% and tick the box with 50% gray:

Choose a tool Dodge tool (Lightening) (o) with range Midtones (Mid Tones) and Exposure (exposure) about 10-15%, and then lighten the details of the building under the lamps. You can see how the author did it in normal mode and the result with the blend mode Overlay(Overlap).

Step 7

Drag the image of street 2 into our document and set it below the image of street 1. Place the part with the light in the upper right corner of the canvas, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 8

Apply Gaussian blur(Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 4 pixels on the layer with this street to make it soft.

2. How to retouch a person in the foreground

Step 1

Drag the image of person 1 into our working paper and click on the second icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a mask to this layer. Use a medium soft black brush to remove a dark background and focus on the outside.

Step 2

Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) (set it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask)) to reduce the focus on the man, especially on the cheeks and shirt. On this layer mask, use a soft black brush to erase dark details.

Step 3

Create another adjustment layer. Curves(Curves) to give more light to human shadow areas. Draw on the selected areas carefully so that they are not affected by this adjustment layer.

Step 4

Create a new layer, change the mode to Overlay (Overlap), opacity 100%, and tick the box with 50% gray. Choose tools Dodge (Lightening) and Burn tool (Dimming) to improve the light and shadow on a man, especially for a clearer expression of his gaze.

Step 5

Create a new layer and use a small medium soft white brush to draw light on the lower part of the person’s eye (the one in the shadow). Lower Opacity (opacity) of this layer is up to 50% and use a layer mask so that the color is not too bright.

Step 6

Create a new layer and use a small hard brush with color # 9e9e9e to paint more beards for a person.

3. How to add a police officer

Step 1

Cut out the policeman from the image with man 2 and add him to the street. Set this layer below the human 1 layer and apply Gaussian blur(Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 7 pixels so that its blur corresponds to the softness of the street.

Step 2

To create a shadow for this person, create a new layer under the layer with the person. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the layer with Man 2 to load the selection.

Fill this layer with # 0f0f0f and rotate it vertically (Edit> Transform> Flip Vertical) (Editing> Transform> Display Vertically). Use the tool Free transform tool(Free Transform (Ctrl-T)) to enlarge the upper part of the shadow and slightly change the direction of the shadow to match the direction of the lamps.

Step 3

Apply Gaussian blur(Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 7 pixels for this layer and use a layer mask to reduce the visibility of the upper part of the shadow.

Step 4

Create a new layer above the cop layer, change the mode to Overlay(Overlap) with opacity 100% and tick the fill with 50% gray. Use the tool Dodge tool (Lightening) to draw more light for some details of a person’s outline, and use Burn tool (Blackout) to enhance the shadow on the gun and on one leg.

4. How to draw rain and raindrops

Step 1

Create a new layer on top of all layers. Change the foreground to white and the brush to Rain. Choose a brush with medium intensity and draw rain on the entire canvas. After that, convert this layer to a Smart Object. Here is my result:

Step 2

Apply Gaussian blur(Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 5 pixels on a layer with rain. On the mask, use a soft black brush to restore the rain on the man and a little outside, leaving a blurred rain in the background to match the softness of the place.

Step 3

Create a new layer and use a small, medium soft white brush to paint some raindrops on the man’s face. The light on the drops should follow the background light.

5. How to make final adjustments

Step 1

Create a new adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map) over the layers and select colors from # 1f1203 to # 2c85e9.

Step 2

Add adjustment layer Color balance (Color balance) and change settings Midtones and Highlights (Mid Tones and Lights):

Step 3

Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the contrast of the scene.

Step 4

To change the light and background color of the street, use the tool. Lasso Tool (Lasso) (L) to highlight this area, and set this value to 50:

Go to Layer > NewAdjustmentLayer > ChannelMixer(Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Channel Mixing) and change all values Red, Green and Blue(Red, Green, Blue):

Step 5

Load the layer mask with the channel mixing by holding Ctrl and pressing the mask thumbnail. Create an adjustment layer Color balance(Color balance) with this selection to enhance the golden light.

Step 6

Make another adjustment layer with ChannelMixer (channel mixing) and change the values Blue (Blue) to change the blue color to green.

Step 7

Create a new layer and use a soft brush with color # 140908 to darken the left edge of the scene. Lower Opacity (opacity) of this layer up to 50%, so that the effect is better.

Step 8

Add another adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) to darken and slightly change the color of the entire scene. On the layer mask, draw the area of person 1 so that this layer is not affected.

Congratulations, everything is ready!
