Create a dramatic sunset in Photoshop

In this lesson of medium difficulty, we will create a manipulation with several interesting lighting effects and color them to create a beautiful dramatic sunset, which I hope you will enjoy.

So let’s start!

Step 1

Open the image with the background where the highlands are located (Ctrl +O) or just transfer this image to Adobe Photoshop. Layer with this image name field 1. Then, open the background with the image of the terrain with the house and place it above the mountainous image in our document. Make sure both horizons are at the same distance. Layer with this image name field 2. With the tool Free Transform (Free transform) (Ctrl + T) stretch it over the entire document, flip horizontally and position it like in the screenshot:

Step 2

Add a layer mask for the layer field 2. With the tool Gradient tool (Gradient) (G) black and white, in the middle of the document, from top to bottom, drag the gradient on the layer mask and position it as in the screenshot.

Step 3

Next, let’s add another image with a sunset in the background to our document. Place it at the bottom of the layers palette and with the tool Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl +T) stretch the entire document. Call it sky. Move both layers field 1and field 2 in one group (Ctrl +G) and apply to it Layer mask (Layer mask).

Step 4

Proceed to color correction. We need to reduce the saturation of the layer. field1. Create a new adjustment layer. Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) above the layer field 1 asClipping mask (Clipping mask) and slide the slider Saturation (Saturation) to -60 So we will color-match the future background of the image.

Step 5

Now let’s apply the layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient overlap) for layer field 2. This is necessary due to the fact that the sky to the right is dark, and beneath it bright mountains. Not good! Apply the same settings as in the screenshot.

Result:

The order of the layers is shown in the screenshot:

Step 6

Create a copy of the merged layers (Alt +Shift +Ctrl +E) and translate it into Smart object (right click on the layer and Convert to Smart Object). Name this layer Bg. Now go to Filter – Blur Gallery – Iris blur (Filter – Gallery blur – Blur aperture) and apply the same settings as in the screenshot. Also, it is recommended to put a tick next to High quality (High quality).

Author’s Note: in addition to the filter Iris blur, You can use another blur filter. More information about Iris blur, can be read here.

Result:

Step 7

Let’s add rhino to our document. First you need to separate it from the background. You can use tools like Magic wand tool (Magic Wand) (W), Quick selection tool (Quick selection) (W), and you can also use the tool Pen tool (Feather) (P). After the selection is done, add Layer mask (Layer mask) for this layer. Then, right-click on the layer mask, select Refine edge (Clarify edge) and apply the same settings as in the screenshot:

Transfer the rhino image to our document and name this layer. rhino Translate this layer into Smart object (by right-clicking on the layer and selecting Convert to Smart Object (Translate to Smart Object)).

Next, with the tool Free Transform (Free transform) (Ctrl + T) slightly reduce it and place it almost in the center of our document, as in the screenshot:

Step 8

Place the rhino layer in the group (Ctrl +G) and give it the same name as the layer – rhino. In the same group, create a new adjustment layer. Vibrance (Vibration) and apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask) to layer rhino. This is necessary to reduce the saturation of the rhino and bring it to the general atmosphere of the image. The results with the settings on the screenshot:

Result:

Step 9

Again, in the same group, create a new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) (to give a contrast to the rhino) and also apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask) with the same settings as in the screenshot:

Result:

Step 10

Now, add to the layer rhino – Layer mask (Layer mask) and using the tool Brush (Brush) (B), draw the grass, on the layer mask, next to the rhino paws. To add grass, use the black brush number 134 from a standard set of brushes. The only thing that needs to be changed in this tool is to remove the check mark next to Color Dynamics (Color dynamics) in Window – Brush (Window – Brush).

The result is visible in the screenshot. Do not forget about the hind legs of the rhinoceros and its face.

Step 11

Now we will create a shadow from the light source.

Duplicate layer rhino (Ctrl +J) and place a copy under the original. Remove Layer mask (Layer mask) and rasterize this layer by right-clicking with the mouse and selecting Rasterize layer (Rasterize the layer).

With the tool Free transform (Free transform) (Ctrl + T) mirror the copy vertically Flip to Vertikal (Flip vertically) and place below the image with the rhinoceros.

Then, using the adjustment layer Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) let’s make it black. To do this, move the slider Lightness (Brightness) to value -100.

Then using the tool Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) right click on the transformable area and select Distort (Distortion). Shift the distortion as you think the light will fall and form a shadow. Do not forget the perspective.

Then, for the copy layer rhino, add white again Layer mask (Layer mask) and with black and white Gradient (Gradient) (G) Stretch over the shadow from top to bottom to make a scattered shadow, as in the screenshot:

Let’s edit the shadow and make it more natural by blurring the border. To do this, go to Filter – Blur Gallery – Field blur (Filter – Gallery Blur – Blur on the surface) and apply the blur radius to 20 px.

Modify the shadow by removing the extra areas where there is a mismatch with the legs. Do this with a tool. Brush (Brush) (B) black on the white mask layer. And also, reduce Opacity (Opacity) copy layer rhinobefore 75%.Layer with Layer mask (Masked layer), on which you worked with the shadow, name rhinoshadow.

Step 14

Next, above the layer rhinoshadow create a new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N) and name it softshadow. Use the tool Brush (Brush) (B) with round diameter and low stiffness. But first, let’s edit its settings a bit. Go to Window – Brush (Window – Brush). Uncheck with Shape dynamics (The dynamics of the form) and put next to Transfer (Broadcast). In the topmost drop-down list Control (Control) put Pen pressure (Pen pressure). And also, in the upper section Brush tip shape (Brush print form), reduce Spacing (Interval) to eight%. Meanings Opacity (Opacity) and Flow (Push) put on thirty%.After all the settings have been set, brush in the area under the rhino to create another faint shadow from it. It should be barely noticeable, as in the screenshot:

Step 15

Now we will create (strengthen) the shadows on the rhino. Above the rhino layer, create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) and apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask) (so that the brush does not climb out of the rhinoceros). Name the new layer bodyshadows.

Result:

The order of the layers is shown in the screenshot:

Step 16

Now we will add a girl to our document. Transfer it to Photoshop, or just open it (Ctrl +O).

After the girl is selected, transfer it to our document and position it at the very top of the layers palette. Name this layer girl and put in the same group (Ctrl +G).Immediately translate the layer with the girl in Smart object (Smart object) (right click on the + Convert to Smart Object layer). Now, with the tool Free transform (Free Transform) (Ctrl + T) reduce the girl in relation to the rhinoceros and position sitting on it. The main thing is that it should not be too small and not too big.

Step 17

Create a new layer under the layer with the girl (Shift +Ctrl +N) and name it girlshadows. Use the tool Brush (Brush) (B) with low stiffness, and also set the values Opacity (Opacity) and Flow (Push) by 20-30%.Change the blending mode of this layer to Multiply (Multiplication) and draw an adjacent and cast shadows under the girl on the right and left, approximately as in the screenshot:

Step 18

Above the layer girl create a new adjustment layer Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask). Click on the icon with the palm and arrows in different directions. Then hover the mouse over the image (the Eye dropper tool should appear) and click on the girl’s left leg, right on the dress. Value Master (Major) should change to Reds (Red). Then, just change the value Saturation (Saturation) to -9. Thus, we will make the girl not so red, that is, a little paler.

Here’s what we got:

Next, create a new adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) and also apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask). Set the same values as in the screenshot:

Result:

Step 19

Create a new layer at the very top of the group. girl and apply it as Clipping Mask (clipping mask). Name this layer bodyshadows. Use the tool Brush (Brush) (B) with the same values that were set a little earlier and draw dark areas on the model, mainly on the right side of the girl.

Then for the layer girl, create Layer mask (Layer mask) and using the tool Brush (Brush) (B), low stiffness, black color, all with the same settings as previously set on the white mask of the layer, slightly soften the coarse contour of the model’s hair if it remains coarse and you did not use the tools at hand to soften it.

When finished with the outline, we need to finish the hair. How to create a brush to paint the hair, described in detail in this lesson in step 3.

After creating the brush, create a new layer. (Shift +Ctrl +N) under the layer girl and name it hair. With the selected tool Brush (Brush) (b) clamp left Alt (a pipette should appear) and click the pipette in the hair area to sample color.

Translator’s Note: because the model has different hair, take color samples from different places to make the hair look more realistic. After that, draw the hair along the contour of the head. By the way, this is quite an exciting experience. I think that girls will like it and in the future they will practice in their photos.

Approximate result which should turn out:

Step 20

Let’s give the skin of the model the effect of softness. To do this, create a new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N) at the very top of the layers palette, and apply it as Clipping mask (Clipping mask) and name softskin.

Use the tool Mixer brush (Mixing brush) (B) and give it the same settings as in the screenshot (click on image to enlarge):

Walk through this tool on all parts of the model’s skin, slightly softening them. It is necessary that the skin does not have spots and some “dirty” areas.

Result:

Step 21

Create a new layer again (Shift +Ctrl +N) at the very top of the group girl and name it makeup. Change its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap). Use the tool Brush (Brush) (B) medium hard, Opacity (Opacity) and Flow (Push) put on 100%. Brush a small diameter of blue, paint over the iris. Then, with a pink brush, paint the lips of our model. Approximately, as in the screenshot:

The order of the layers, mainly in this group girl, shown in the screenshot:

Step 22

Create a new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N) and right there, in the layer creation window, name it dodgeburn Change blending mode to Soft light (Soft light) and tick next to Fill with Soft-Light-neutral color (50% gray) (Fill with 50% gray). Use the tool Burn tool (Dimmer) with stiffness 0% and Exposure (Exposure) ten%. Darken all the dark areas on the model’s body and the rhinoceros. Then use the tool Dodge tool (Settler) with Exposure (Exposure) thirty%and lighten up all the bright areas on the model and rhinoceros. Opacity (Opacity) of this layer reduce to 60%.

And here is the result:

Step 23

And now we’ll apply something like a vignette to the document. Create a new adjustment layer. Gradient fill (Gradient fill) and apply the following settings for it:

Change the blending mode of this adjustment layer to Multiply (Multiplication).

Result:

Step 24

Create a new adjustment layer. Color look up (Color search) and dropdown list 3Dlutfile select DropBlues 3Dl.

Result:

Step 25

Create another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and apply the same settings as in the screenshot:

Result:

Step 25

It does not hurt to create a correction layer Gradient map (Gradient map). Clicking on the black and white image of the gradient, and then on the small settings icon, select in the drop-down listPhotographic toning (Photographic toning) and in the list of gradients, select Gold-Copper. Change the blending mode of this adjustment layer to SoftLight (Soft light) and reduce it Opacity (Opacity) to 15%.

Step 26

Also, we need the use of a correction layer.Channel mixer (Mixing channels). The settings that are needed are shown in the screenshot:

Result:

Step 27

Another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) – does not hurt. Apply the following settings for it and change it. Opacity (Opacity) on 40-50%.

Result:

Step 28

Create another adjustment layer Color look up (Color search) and dropdown list 3Dlutfile select DropBlues 3Dl. Change Opacity (Opacity) of this layer on 50%.

With color correction, we are finished! Move all layers to a pre-created group (Ctrl +G) and name her adjustments.

Step 29

And now we will create light from the sun behind the back of the girl. Above the layer Bg create a new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N) call him Sunlight 1 and change its blending mode to Color dodge (Lightening the basics). With the tool Brush (Brush) (B), with a large radius and with color #foura250d click once at the place where the sunset is located.

Then create another new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N)call him Sunlight2 and change its blending mode to Screen (Screen). Use the tool again Brush (Brush) (B), just take a different coloreightd3800and in the same place, with a radius slightly smaller, we will make one click.

Take another color #bf6710 and with the same tool, only with a slightly smaller radius, we will make one click on the layer Sunlight2.

And finally, add another color. #f29942 and with an even smaller radius, put 1-2 clicks:

Step 30

Create a new layer (Shift +Ctrl +N) at the very top of the layers palette and call it glow. Change its blending mode to Screen (Screen) and, with the help of a fixed tool Brush (Brush) (B) create something like a spatial perspective by clicking once on the left and right shoulder, and also in the palm area of the girl with the color #foure3a27.If you need to lighten or darken this operation a little, you can use the tool Hue /Saturation (Hue / Saturation) immediately pressing Ctrl +U and moving the slider Lightness (Brightness) as long as you see fit.

Step 31

Make a combined copy of all layers. (Alt +Shift +Ctrl +E) and translate this layer into Smart object (Smart object) (right click on the layer and select ConverttoSmart-Object in the list). After that, go to Filter – Camera raw (Filter – Camera Raw) and apply the following settings:

Then, the author chooses the tool. Adjustment Brush (Corrective brush) (K) and clicks it on the face of our model, exposing a kind of “pin” and applies the following settings to increase the light on the model:

As well as other settings:

Result:

The lesson turned out to be quite long and, like most lessons, uncomplicated. I hope that those who have reached the end of the lesson have gained a lot of knowledge during its implementation and you have liked the lesson.
