Create a fabulous collage in the medieval style

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fabulous composition with a medieval woman and a pigeon in Adobe Photoshop using various collage techniques.

First we add the sky and the background landscape, then we insert the bridge, the model and the castle and combine it all into one composition using adjustment layers, masks and brushes. After that we will work with flowers, dove, rose and scroll, applying the techniques we have already studied. We will also add flying petals and create fabulous lighting with the help of brushes and blending modes. At the end we will add some adjustment layers.

1. Add sky and landscape

Step 1

Create a new document of 2000 x 1333 pixels with the following parameters:

Step 2

Open the picture with the sky. Via Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) (Rectangular selection) select the part of the image with the sky and using Move Tool (V) (Move) drag the selection to the working canvas. Place the sky at the top of the document.

Step 3

Move on Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Color Balance (Layer – New adjustment layer – Color balance). Note that we will transform all adjustment layers in this lesson into a clipping mask for the working layer. To do this, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + G or click at the bottom of the settings panel of the adjustment layer on the special button with the down arrow. We apply the following values for Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Photo Filter (Photo Filter) and select the color # 00ecd3. Activate Brush Tool (B) (Brush), select a soft round brush of black color with 40-45% opacity and edit the upper part of the mask of the adjustment layer in order to reduce the effect effect in this area.

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to slightly brighten the sky. With a soft black brush (B) with low opacity (30-35%), edit the mask of the adjustment layer to reduce the effect of the effect on the sides of the picture.

Step 6

We open a photo with a landscape and with the help Move Tool (V) (Move) drag it onto the canvas.

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the button. Add layer mask (Add a layer mask) and hide the sky over the mountains with a soft black brush.

Step 7

Next, apply Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) and set Radius (Radius) 14 pixels:

Step 8

Add an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) and customize Midtones (Middle tones) so that the color of the mountains matches the color of the sky.

Step 9

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) slightly brightens the landscape:

2. Import the bridge

Step 1

In any convenient way we cut the bridge and insert it in the lower part of the working canvas.

Step 2

Add a correction layer over the bridge Color Balance (Color balance) and customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 3

Above we add an adjustment layer. Photo Filter (Photo Filter) and select the color # fb5757 for it. This will add a soft pinkish reflection from the sky to the surface of the bridge.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and increase the brightness of the bridge. Edit the mask of the adjustment layer to remove the effect of the effect at the bottom of the bridge, which does not receive light from the sky.

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the contrast and sharpness of the bridge so that it matches the mood and atmosphere of the fairy sky.

Step 6

We use Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso) to add shadow under the right parapet. Select the desired area and fill it with black.

Decrease Opacity (Opacity) of this layer to 60% and apply the filter Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a blur radius of 6 pixels.

Step 7

Add a mask and remove a sharp transition in the lower part of the shadow.

3. Add a model

Step 1

Cut the model and place it above the bridge.

Step 2

Using the mask, we remove the bottom of the dress so that it looks standing on the bridge.

Step 3

Above we create a new layer and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G). Activate Clone Stamp Tool (S) (Stamp) and remove the tattoo on the back and arm of the model.

Step 4

Above we add an adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color balance) and customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 5

Also in clipping mask mode, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) to lighten the model, as it is now too dark compared to our composition.

Step 6

Create a new layer in blend mode. Overlay (Overlap) with 100% opacity and fill it with 50% gray.

Activate Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer), set Range (Range) on Midtones (Mid Tones) and Exposure (Impact) – by 15-20%. Using these tools, we modify the light and shade on the model. Below you can see the result in blending mode. Normal (Normal) (left) and Overlay (Overlap) (right):

4. Add a lock

Step 1

Cut the lock and paste it into the left side of the working canvas. Place the layer with the lock under the layer with the bridge.

Step 2

Apply a filter to the lock Gaussian Blur (Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 12 pixels, as it is out of focus.

Step 3

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and adjust the parameters Master (Everything):

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) and adjust the settings Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to change the colors of the lock.

Step 6

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the brightness of the lock. Edit the mask of the adjustment layer and use a soft black brush (B) to hide the effect in the shaded areas (to brighten them).

Step 7

Create a new layer, change its blend mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100% and fill with 50% gray. Using tools Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer) we modify the light and shade on the castle, especially we lighten the shadow areas and reduce the contrast.

5. Add branches with flowers

Step 1

From the Image Flowers 1 we cut a branch and insert it in the upper right corner of the working document.

Step 2

Apply filter to colors Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 4 pixels.

Step 3

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to change the shade of colors.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the brightness of the colors.

Step 5

In the lower left corner we place the branch Flowers 2 and apply a filter to it. Gaussian Blur (Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 14 pixels. Place this layer above the layer with the model.

Step 6

Using the adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) discolor flowers.

Step 7

The flowers are too dark, so we will make them brighter using an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves).

Step 8

Increase the brightness of the colors using the adjustment layer Levels (Levels), do not forget to transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G). Edit the mask of the adjustment layer to remove the effect of the effect in too bright places.

Step 9

In the lower right corner we add Flower 3 and apply a filter to it. Gaussian Blur (Blur according to Gauss) with a radius of 14 pixels.

Step 10

Perform color correction of the branch using the correction layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 11

Create an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the brightness of the branch. Our task is to add the correct shadows on these colors. Soft black brush remove the effect on those petals that are illuminated by a light source on the stage.

6. Add a pigeon, a rose and a scroll

Step 1

Cut the pigeon and paste it into the working paper. Place the bird in front of the model at the level of its eyes.

Step 2

For the pigeon layer, create a correction layer. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and decrease the parameter Saturation (Saturation) almost to a minimum.

Step 3

Using the adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) add a pink tint to the dove.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to reduce the brightness on the dove. Using the mask, we hide the effect of color correction on the upper part of the wing.

Step 5

Take the tools Dodge (Clarifier) and Burn Tool (O) (Dimmer) and on the new layer adjust the light and shade of the pigeon.

Step 6

Cut a rose and insert it near the pigeon. Using the mask, we remove the extra leaves and details so that the stem of the flower is sufficiently free, and we place birds on the beak.

Step 7

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to change the hues of the flower. Customize Reds (Red) and Yellows (Yellow):

Step 8

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to lighten the stem of the rose.

Step 9

We cut out the scroll and place it under the pigeon’s paws.

Step 10

Using the adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) change the color of the scroll:

Step 11

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to lighten the scroll a bit. Edit the mask of the adjustment layer to remove the effect on the bottom of the scroll, as it is hidden from the main light source.

Step 12

Create another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to enhance the shadows on the bottom of the scroll. At the top of the mask we hide the effect effect.

7. Add flying petals

Step 1

Open the image with pink flowers. Via Quick Selection Tool (W) (Fast selection) select one central lobe and add it in the lower right corner of the main working document. Next, activate the transformation Layer – Transform – warp (Layer – Transformation – Deformation) and distort the petal, as shown below:

Step 2

Apply filter to petal Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 8 pixels:

Step 3

Many times we duplicate (Ctrl + J) a layer with a leaf and distribute copies over the working canvas. In the foreground, the petals should be slightly larger. We adjust their size, and also apply a filter to them. Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with different radius values to create a depth and defocus effect.

Step 4

Select all the layers with petals and press Ctrl + G to add them to a separate group. Blend mode of group change to Normal (Normal) with opacity 100%. Then we add a correction layer over the group. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) in clipping mask mode (Ctrl + Alt + G) to change the color of the petals.

Step 5

For the same group apply the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to shade the petals. On some petals of the foreground we delete the effect effect using the mask.

Step 6

Add another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the brightness of the petals. In the second screenshot below, black color shows where we hid the effect of the correction.

8. Create a fabulous lighting.

Step 1

Create a new layer at the very top of the layers panel and use a soft dark-colored brush (# 2a011d) to paint the upper part of the sky where the light source is located, as well as the right side of the model, the lock and the parapet of the bridge. Change the blending mode of this layer to Linear Dodge (Linear clarifier) with 100% opacity. Using the mask slightly adjust the lighting on the castle.

Step 2

In another color (# eba498) we add warm colors on the model, the castle, the light source and other places where it is needed. Change the blending mode of this layer to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%. Using a mask, you can control the effect of the effect and hide it in certain places.

9. Add the final touches

Step 1

Above all previous layers add adjustment layer Photo Filter (Photo Filter) and choose the color # fff373 for it. We do not transform this and the following adjustment layers into a clipping mask, since they are necessary for the general color correction of the entire composition, and not of individual details.

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Color Fill (Color) and select color # 280404. Set the blending mode of this layer to Exclusion (Exception) with opacity 100%.

Step 3

Add an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance), then customize Midtones (Mid Tones) and Highlights (Bright tones):

Step 4

And to get the final result, add a correction layer. Vibrance (Vibration). Use a soft black brush to edit the mask to remove the color correction effect on the model’s back.
