Create a fantastic collage with fluttering jellyfish in Photoshop

?

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fantastic composition with a girl watching jellyfish flying.

In the beginning we will create a base using a few stock pictures. After that, we will add a stone arch, retouch the model and combine it all together using corrective layers, masks and brushes. Then we insert jellyfish, draw lighting and sparks. In the end, we will adjust the saturation using the adjustment layer. Vibrance (Juiciness).

Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative version of the images to perform the lesson.

1. Create a composition base

Step 1

Create a new document of 2000 x 1333 pixels (Ctrl + N) with the following settings:

Step 2

Move on Layer – New Fill Layer – Solid Color (Layer – New fill layer – Color) and select the color # b2bfc2.

Step 3

Select the mask of the adjustment layer and activate the Brush Tool. (B) (Brush). Choose a soft round brush in black and remove the upper half of the filled layer.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves) to darken the bottom of the color fill. With a soft black brush (B), edit the mask of the adjustment layer and remove the blackout on the left side of the fill.

Step 5

We open a photo with mountains and with the help Move Tool (V) (Move) move it to the working paper. Place the mountains in the upper half of the document.

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the second button on the left to add a mask to the layer. With a soft black brush (B), remove the hard edges on the top and bottom borders of the mountains to combine them with the background fill.

Step 6

Again, insert the picture with the mountains on the document and reflect it horizontally Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal (Editing – Transforming – Flip Horizontally). Add a mask and use a soft black brush to remove the top and right borders of the photo. We leave only the left part of the picture.

Step 7

At the top of the document we place a photo with the sky and with the help of a mask we remove the lower border, leaving only the clouds.

Step 8

Above all layers add adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the brightness of the picture. Edit the layer mask and remove the effect on the left and in the center. Our task is to create soft lighting in the center of the composition.

Step 9

Create an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) and add a bluish tint. Customize Midtones (Mid Tones):

2. Add an arch

Step 1

Cut a stone arch and place it in the bottom of the canvas. Using the free transformation (Ctrl + T), slightly rotate it.

Step 2

Move on Edit – puppet Warp (Editing – Puppet Warp). Put the key points on the grid and with their help raise the lower part of the arch above to increase the width of the passage.

Step 3

Add a mask on the layer with the arch and the hard brush (B) of black color; we remove small details on the bottom part so that the stone looks more neat.

Step 4

After deformation, some of the details stretched a bit. To fix this, we take Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso), select the part of the mountain on the original photo and move the selection to the working document. Place the layer with the fragment immediately above the layer with the arch and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Add a mask to this layer and use a soft black brush (B) to merge the fragment with the arch, blocking the problem areas.

Step 5

Cut more pieces of rock from the original photo and overlap with them all the stretched parts on the arch. Do not forget to transform all layers with fragments into clipping masks (Ctrl + Alt + G).

Step 6

To discolor the arch, apply a correction layer to it in the clipping mask mode. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Decrease Saturation (Saturation) to -67:

Step 7

Next, add an adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color balance) and adjust the settings Midtones (Mid Tones):

Step 8

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) slightly lighten stone arch.

Step 9

Create another layer Curves (Curves) and brighten the arch more. Use a soft black brush to edit the mask of the last adjustment layer and remove the effect in the shaded areas so that they are not too bright. Below you can see a separate screenshot of the mask and the finished result.

Step 10

Create a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), switch its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100% and fill it with 50% gray color (for this, we put a special tick in the layer creation window):

Activate Dodge/ Burn Tool (O) (Clarifier / Dimmer), set on the top panel Range (Range) on Midtones (Mid Tones) and Exposure (Impact) – by 10-20%. Using these tools, we modify the light and shade on the gray fill to add more details to the arch. The result is shown in the overlay mode. Normal (Normal) and Overlay (Overlap):

3. Retouch model

Step 1

Open the photo with the model and cut it. Between the original layer and the cut, add a new layer and fill it with any light shade (I chose # d1ac92).

Step 2

The girl’s left leg is circumcised, and this needs to be corrected. We open a photo with the woman from additional materials. Cut the right foot and move it to the photo with the model. After that, we reflect the foot horizontally.

Add a mask on a layer with a foot and a soft brush (B) in black color. We modify the edges to combine the foot with the model’s foot.

Step 3

Add a correction layer above the layer with the foot Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (transform it into a clipping mask) and slightly discolor the leg.

Step 4

Above we add a new layer and use a soft brush (color # d1ac92 and opacity 25-30%) to darken the foot in the area of the fingers.

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to darken slightly the shaded area of the foot. We edit the mask of the adjustment layer and delete the effect at the end of the foot in order to preserve brightness in this place.

Step 6

Add another layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the brightness of the forefoot. At the bottom of the foot we remove the effect effect.

Step 7

Create a new layer and use a small brush (colors # 30272c and # 151013) to finish the hair.

Step 8

Hide the original layer with the model and the color fill layer. Press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E to merge the visible layers with the model, foot and hair. Move the resulting layer to the working document and place it in the center above the arch.

Step 9

Under the model, create a new layer and use a soft brush (B) (color # 0b0c0d and opacity 30-40%) draw a shadow under the girl’s body.

Step 10

Apply to model Puppet Warp (Puppet deformation) and slightly stretch the bottom of the dress down.

Step 11

Add a mask on the model layer and remove small details on the back of the dress.

Step 12

Create an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance) and add a light bluish tint to the model.

Step 13

Create an adjustment layer Photo Filter (Photo filter) and select the color # 1cc1bf for it. Use a soft black brush (B) to edit the mask of the adjustment layer to restore the red / yellow spots on the skin of the model.

Step 14

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) we lighten the model, especially the contour of the body, as the background lighting falls on it.

Use a soft black brush to edit the mask of the adjustment layer and remove the effect in the shaded areas.

Step 15

Add a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), switch its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) and fill with 50% gray. Via Dodge/ Burn Tool(O) (Brightener / Dimmer) we modify the model’s light and shade and detail the dress.

4. Basic color correction

Step 1

At the very top of the layers panel, add an adjustment layer. Channel Mixer (Channel mixing) and tune the channel Red (Red). Decrease Opacity (opacity) of this layer to 50%:

Step 2

Add an adjustment layer Photo Filter (Photo filter) and choose the color # 08a9b3 for it.

Step 3

Add another layer Photo Filter (Photo filter) and choose the color # 6f95b0 for it.

Step 4

Create a new fill. Layer – New Fill Layer – Solid Color (Layer – Fill New Layer – Color) and select color # 2b1503 for it. Switch the blending mode of this layer to Exclusion (Exception) with opacity 100%.

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Color Lookup (Color search) and in the settings we set 3DLUT File (3DLUT file) on FoggyNight.3DL. Decrease Opacity (opacity) of this layer is up to 50% and with a soft black brush (B) we remove the effect in the left and central areas of the document.

Step 6

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and reduce the brightness and contrast. Remove the effect effect on the central and left parts of the arch.

Step 7

Add another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and also reduce the brightness and contrast. Soft black brush with low opacity (about 10%) remove the effect around the model to restore brightness in this place.

Step 8

Create a new layer Solid Color (Color) and choose the color # 062635 for it. Soft black brush to remove the effect around the model. With this action, we will reduce the visibility of the background to give the work a darker and more mysterious atmosphere.

Step 9

Using the adjustment layer Vibrance (Juiciness) add saturation. On the skin of the model, especially the lips, hands and feet, remove the effect of the effect, so that they are not too blue.

5. Add jellyfish

Step 1

Open the file with the jellyfish. We select the appropriate angles and download images. We place jellyfish throughout the composition. Below you can see the angles that I chose for this work.

Step 2

Select the layer with the smallest jellyfish and apply a filter to it Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) with a blur radius of 2 pixels.

Step 3

On the layers panel with the Ctrl key pressed, select all the layers with jellyfish and press Ctrl + G to group them. Switch the group’s blending mode to Normal (Normal) with opacity 100%. Apply adjustment layer to group Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Install Hue (Color tone) by +25:

Step 4

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) dim jellyfish. Edit the layer mask and remove the effect on the jellyfish tails at the top of the document.

Step 5

Create another layer Curves (Curves) and darken the jellyfish tails at the bottom of the document. On the remaining jellyfish remove the effect of the adjustment layer.

Step 6

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to add bluish tint to jellyfish tails. In the upper part of the body of jellyfish, remove the effect to maintain a dark yellow shade.

6. Add light effects and sparks

Step 1

We add a new layer above all the previous layers and use the soft brush with the color # f89869 to put spots on large jellyfish. Switch the blending mode of this layer to Linear Dodge (Linear clarifier) with an opacity of 10%.

Step 2

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) this layer and switch its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100%.

Step 3

Above we add an adjustment layer. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (in clipping mask mode (Ctrl + Alt + G)) and customize Hue (Color tone) so that the yellow color becomes orange-red.

Step 4

Create a new layer with the same brush and paint the glow inside the jellyfish. Switch the layer blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100%, then duplicate (Ctrl + J) it to make the effect brighter.

Step 5

Next we draw a reddish reflection of the jellyfish on the arch. Under the group with jellyfish create a new layer. Use a small soft brush and color # ffcb88 with short strokes to draw highlights in the area of jellyfish flying near the arch. We also add highlights at the bottom of the model. After that, switch the blending mode to Color (Chromaticity) with opacity 100%.

Step 6

Over the group with jellyfish, add a new layer and use a small brush with the color # f1805e to draw hairs on the model’s hair.

Step 7

With a soft brush, color # f8b369 draw more highlights along the contour of the model, on the legs, arms and dress. Switch the layer blending mode to Hard Light (Hard light) with 100% opacity.

Step 8

Add a new layer, switch its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) and fill with 50% gray. Via Dodge Tool (O) (Clarifier) Increase the brightness of the red glow on the arch and model.

Step 9

Create a new layer and set the foreground color to # f8b369. Hit the F5 key and customize the brush as shown below:

With this brush we draw sparks under the jellyfish hats and on the model’s dress. Group (Ctrl + G) layers with sparks and switch the group’s blending mode to Color Dodge (Brightening base) with 100% opacity.

To adjust the intensity of the sparks, you can use the mask.

7. Final Correction

Step 1

Add a new layer and soft brush (color # 054c5f and opacity 25-30%) reduce the appearance of jellyfish in the sky to emphasize the soft and mysterious atmosphere of the place.

Step 2

As a final touch, we add an adjustment layer. Vibrance (Juiciness). Using a mask, we remove the effect on the skin of the model and the tails of the jellyfish that are in the sky.

Congratulations, we are done!
