Create a fantastic portrait of Flower Girl in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a fantastic portrait of a woman in Photoshop. With the help of images with cobwebs, pink branches and spiders, we will create a background. Also we will retouch the model, we will decorate it with a hat from a rose, a dress from a sepal and a cobweb in dew drops. As final touches, we will add several adjustment layers.

1. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new document of 2000 x 1933 pixels with the following settings:

Step 2

Open the background in Photoshop and using Move Tool (V) (Move) drag it to the main document.

Step 3

Move on Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) and set Radius (Radius) by 19 pixels. Blur will help us to separate the background from the model and add a depth effect.

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer – New adjustment layer – Curves) and increase the brightness of the background.

Select the mask of the adjustment layer by clicking on it with the left mouse button, take Brush Tool (B) (Brush) and choose a soft round brush in black. Brush along the edges of the canvas so that the effect of the adjustment layer remains only in the center of the background.

Step 5

Add another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the contrast of shadows along the edges of the document. Soft black brush (B) edit the layer mask to remove the effect in the center of the background, as there will be a source of light.

Step 6

Add an adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and bleach the background.

Step 7

Change the background color using the adjustment layer. Color Balance (Color balance). In the settings, select Midtones (Midtones) and increase Blue (Blue) to maximum (+100).

2. Retouch model

Step 1

Remove the background on the image with the model and place it in the center of the working paper.

Step 2

Above we add an adjustment layer. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) and transform it into a clipping mask (Ctrl + Alt + G). This will discolor the model. With a soft black brush (B) with an opacity of 30-35%, edit the mask of the adjustment layer to restore the warm tones on the model’s skin.

Step 3

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) reduce the brightness of the model. We edit the layer mask and remove the effect in the shaded areas so that they do not become even darker.

Step 4

Because of the original light source, the outline of the model turned out to be dark. Let’s add another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to increase the brightness along the contour of the model and the light source corresponded to our composition. On the front of the illuminated part of the model, remove the effect of the curves.

Step 5

Create a new layer. Activate Brush Tool (B) (Brush), choose a small brush, color # eeebe8 and opacity 50%. We spend on the contour of the model to modify its coverage.

Step 6

Above all previous layers, add a new one and a small stiff brush (B) (color # cec8c8) draw light strands on the model’s hair.

3. Add a background web

Step 1

Paste the image with the web and fill the document with it completely (Ctrl + T), switch the blending mode of the web layer to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%.

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the second button on the right. Add layer mask (Add layer mask) to add a mask to this layer. Black brush edit the mask and delete most of the web to the right.

Step 2

Slightly blur the web with a filter Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 2 pixels.

Step 3

Several times we duplicate (Ctrl + J) the web layer and distribute copies to the corners of the document. With the help of free transformation (Ctrl + T) we rotate them, adjust the scale and modify the masks so that all copies do not look the same.

Step 4

In the same way, we insert the image of web 2 and edit it (apply a mask, duplicate it and blur it with Gaussian Blur (Blur according to Gauss) with exactly the same radius).

Step 5

With the Ctrl key pressed on the layers panel, select all layers with cobwebs and press Ctrl + G to group them. Switch the blending mode of this group to Screen (Lightening) with opacity 100%, above we add an adjustment layer Levels (Levels) and transform it into a clipping mask for the group (Ctrl + Alt + G). Customize levels to get rid of hard edges.

4. Add spiders

Step 1

Open the image with spiders. We cut two lower spiders, place one on the left side of the composition, and the second on the model’s neck. Increase the scale (Ctrl + T) of the spider on the left.

Step 2

Apply filter to background spider Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 6 pixels.

Step 3

Under the spider layer on the neck, add a new layer. With a small soft brush (B) (color # 0c0b0b and opacity 20%) draw a shadow.

Step 4

Grouping (Ctrl + G) the spiders and in the clipping mask mode apply the adjustment layer to the group Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to discolor them.

Step 5

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) increase the brightness of the spiders. Use a soft black brush (B) to edit the mask to remove the effect on the shaded areas on the left side.

Step 6

Next we work with the background spider. Inside the group above the spider add a new layer, fill it with 50% gray Edit – Fill (Edit – Fill) (in the window that opens in the drop-down menu Contents (Content) choose 50% Gray (50% gray)) and switch the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100%.

Activate Dodge Tool (O) (Clarifier), switch on the top panel Range (Range) on Highlights (Backlight) and decrease Exposure (Exposure) up to 20-25%. We spend on the spider to add highlights. Below in the screenshot you can see the result with the blend mode Normal (Regular) (left) and Overlay (Overlap) (right).

5. Add roses

Step 1

Open the image of rose 1 and cut out the flowers. Insert a bouquet in the upper right corner of the canvas, duplicate it (Ctrl + J) and move the copy to the lower left corner. Turn the duplicate (Ctrl + T) and select the appropriate angle.

Step 2

For each layer with roses apply a filter Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 8 pixels to shift the roses to the background.

Step 3

Group (Ctrl + G) all layers with roses and apply an adjustment layer to the group. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Adjust the color of roses and leaves. Customize Reds (Red) and Yellows (Yellow) as below:

Step 4

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) dim roses. We edit the layer mask and remove the effect on the areas with highlights to restore their brightness.

Step 5

For each layer with a rose above, create a new layer, switch its blending mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100% and fill with 50% gray. Using tools Dodge/ Burn Tool (O) (Dodge / Dimmer) we refine the light and shade of roses.

Step 6

Open the image of a rose 4 and cut out the flowers. Paste them in the lower right corner and apply Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur) with a radius of 6 pixels.

Step 7

Double click on this layer and apply the layer style. Inner Shadow (Inner shadow). In the window that opens, select the color #fefafa. This will make the details on the roses more contrast.

Step 8

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) dim roses, in particular, to increase the contrast of shadows. Selected areas show areas where we remove the effect effect.

Step 9

Using the adjustment layer Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) bleach roses. Decrease Saturation (Saturation) to -54.

Step 10

Cut out a rose 2 and place it on the model’s head. As you can see, the upper part of the rose does not match the inclination of the head of the model. Add a black mask and a hard brush (B) of black color to the layer and remove the top and bottom of the bud, leaving only the central part.

Step 11

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the layer with the rose and rotate it so that the slope of the top coincides with the inclination of the head. Using a hard brush, remove the bottom and center of the copy of the rose, leaving only the top.

Step 12

Now the rose looks a bit blurred. Let’s increase its sharpness by applying a filter. Filter – Sharpen – unsharp Mask (Filter – Sharpening – Contour Sharpness) to each layer with a rose.

Press Ctrl + F to reapply the filter.

Step 13

Some petals are still blurred more than others. To fix this, above each layer with a rose, we add a new one; we take Clone Stamp Tool (S) (Stamp), hold Alt and take a sample suitable for cloning the area and transfer it to the blurred area, as shown below.

Step 14

Group (Ctrl + G) layers with a rose and bleach the whole group with Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 15

Via Curves (Curves) increase the contrast of the edges of some petals.

Step 16

Add another layer Curves (Curves) to increase the contrast of the shaded areas of the rose. On light details, remove the effect of the adjustment layer.

Step 17

Over the top layer with a rose add a new overlay Overlay (Overlap) with 100% opacity and fill it with 50% gray. Via Dodge/ Burn Tool(O) (Clarifier / Dimmer) we modify light and shade.

Step 18

Under the group with a rose 2 create a new layer. With a soft brush (B) (color # 0c0b0b and opacity 30%) draw a shadow falling from a rose.

6. Create a dress from sepals

Step 1

Open the image rose 3. With Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso) select the sepal on the left, cut it out and move it onto the model’s chest. Rotate (Ctrl + T) detail, as shown below:

Step 2

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the sepal and reduce the copy (Ctrl + T). Move it over the shoulder of the model and reflect horizontally Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal (Editing – Transforming – Flip Horizontally). Using a mask, remove the part that overlaps the shoulder.

Step 3

On the original photo, select the two sepals on the right, cut them out and paste them on the other side of the model’s chest. Using a mask, shorten the long leaf and remove the part of the leaf that overlaps the armpit.

Step 4

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) this layer and move the copy to the shoulder. Remove the lower part with a black brush of medium hardness to leave only the top visible and place this sepal next to the first one on the model’s shoulder.

Step 5

Group all layers with sepals together and apply an adjustment layer to the group. Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation) to discolor and change leaf color.

Step 6

Using the adjustment layer Curves (Curves) darken sepals. We edit the mask and remove the effect on the front of the leaves in order to preserve their brightness.

Step 7

Add another adjustment layer Curves (Curves) to lighten the front of the sepals. On the rest of the plots we delete the effect effect.

Step 8

Above each layer with sepal we add a new one, switch its mode to Overlay (Overlap) with opacity 100% and fill with 50% gray. Via Dodge/ Burn Tool(O) (Clarifier / Dimmer) we modify light and shade.

Step 9

Under the group with sepals add a new layer. Using a soft brush (color # 0c0b0b and opacity 10%) draw light shadows under the leaves on the model’s chest.

7. Add a web on the model

Step 1

Move the image of the web 3 on the model’s head and switch the blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%. Activate the transformation (Ctrl + T), right-click on the transformation frame and select Warp (Deformation). We warp the web as shown below.

Use the mask to remove the sharp edges.

Step 2

Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the layer with the web and reduce it (Ctrl + T). Add a mask and remove the top.

Step 3

We group all the web layers on the model’s body and switch the group’s blending mode to Screen (Brightening) with opacity 100%. Apply adjustment layer to group Levels (Levels) to remove the translucent white background.

8. Final Correction

Step 1

Above all previous layers add adjustment layer Gradient Map (Gradient Map) and choose colors for the gradient as # e10019 and # 00601b. Reduce the layer opacity to 20%.

Add another layer Gradient Map (Gradient Map) and choose the colors # d06868 and # 136672. Switch the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light (Soft light) with opacity of 90%.

Step 2

Add Fill Layer – New Fill Layer – Solid Color (Layer – Fill New Layer – Color) and select color # 00051e for it. Switch the blending mode of this layer to Exclusion (Exception) with opacity 100%.

Step 3

Create an adjustment layer Color Balance (Color balance). Customize Midtones (Mid Tones) and Highlights (Sveta):

Step 4

Add an adjustment layer Curves (Curves) and slightly lighten the central part (the area where the model is located). Edit the mask and remove the effect at the edges of the canvas.

Step 5

Add an adjustment layer Photo Filter (Photo filter) and in its settings select the color # 7caaf7.

Step 6

And the last adjustment layer is Vibrance (Juiciness).
