Create a flying tree house in Photoshop

In this tutorial we will create a fantastic collage of a tree floating in the air. You will learn how to work with corrective layers, collect various images in one composition, and other interesting and useful techniques.

The final result.

Photoshop is a great, unique program with which you can create scenes that would not be possible in real life.

In this lesson the following materials were used:

Step 1.

Download an image with a sky size of 2240×1680 pixels and open it in Photoshop. Expand the canvas in the menu Image – Image rotation – 90 ° h / s (Image> Rotate Canvas> 90 ° CW).

Step 2.

Choose a tool Rectangular area(Rectangular Marquee Tool), in the top settings menu put Preset size (Fixed Size) where Width is 1104 pixels and Height 1428 pixels and create a selection, as in the screenshot below. Now go to the menu Image – Crop (Image> Crop), then your image is framed according to the specified size.

Step 3.

Duplicate the cloud layer and apply auto-correction to it in the menu. Image – Auto Contrast (Image> Auto Contrast). Apply blend mode to copy Multiplication (Multiply) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 75%. Now add a layer mask to this layer by clicking on the small icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Make the mask active and fill it with a linear black and white gradient.

Step 4.

Create a new adjustment layer by clicking on the small icon at the bottom of the layers palette, select Color balance (Color Balance) from the drop down menu. Apply the following settings.

Step 5.

Insert the image into the document with the ground (sphere). Remove white background with tool Magic wand(Magic Wand Tool). Turn the dark edge of the sphere to the left using the menu Editing – Transform – Rotate (Edit> Transform> Rotate). Remove the bottom area of the ground beyond the document.

Step 6.

Add a layer mask to the soil layer and, activating the mask, delete the selected areas with a small black brush. If you do not like the treated part of the soil, you can fix the erased contour with a white brush.

Step 7.

Create a new adjustment layer. Levels (Levels). In order to apply the correction only to the soil layer, right-click on the adjustment layer and select the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask). Use the level settings below on the screenshot, then erase the effect of the correction on the mask with a large soft brush as shown below.

Step 8.

Create another adjustment layer with clipping mask. Selective color correction (Selective Color), using the settings on the screenshots below. Then scroll through the mask with a soft black tassel to create a crumbly, spotted texture.

Step 9.

Create a new empty layer, enable it with a clipping mask, as you did with the previous adjustment layers. Draw a ragged contour at the bottom of the soil with a brush “Texture 3“from standard set Different brushes (Assorted Brushes).

Step 10.

Apply blend mode to the created layer. Multiplication (Multiply) set Fill (Fill) at 60% and in the styles of the layer adjust the effect Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).

Step 11.

Insert a tree image into your document. Remove the sky and clouds around using the tool. Magic wand(Magic Wand Tool) with settings as in the screenshot below. Just click the wand all over the sky and clouds and delete the selected area. Also with the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) delete the bottom of the image.

Step 12.

Now on the menu Editing – Transform – Warp (Edit> Transform> Warp) correct the shape of the tree, making it more spherical.

Step 13.

Add a layer mask to the tree layer and erase some of the bottom. Try to create a ragged, winding edge. To do this, you can use brushes from the standard set. Different brushes (Assorted Brushes).

Step 14

Add layer styles Shadow (Drop Shadow) and Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). Set the center of the gradient in the area marked in red in the screenshot below.

Step 15

Create two adjustment layers with clipping masks to the green tree layer – Color balance (Color Balance) and Brightness / Contrast (Brightness and Contrast). See settings below.

Step 16

Process the top contour of the green tree with a tool Blur(Blur Tool), choosing a small soft brush for this. In the tool settings option Intensity (Strength) put on 100%.

Step 17

Open the image with the branches and make it black and white in the menu Image – Correction – Black and White (Image> Adjustments> Black White), leaving the default settings.

Step 18

Adjust the photo with the branches with Levels (Levels), you need to make it more contrast. Play with black and white markers to make very dark branches and a white background. Do not pay attention to the lower part of this image, we will use only the upper branches.

Step 19

Now you need to load the selection of the white background. To do this, go to the menu Selection – Color Range (Select> Color Range). Install option Scatter (Fuzziness) about 100% and click Pipette (Eyedropper Tool) in the white background area and click OK. Clear the selection. As a result, you should have dark branches on a transparent background.

Step 20

Apply a transformation to the branch layer. in the menu Edit – Transform – Flip Vertically (Edit> Transform> Flip Vertical). Select the lower part of the branches and copy the selected area.

Step 21

Paste the copied portion of the branches above the soil layer and below the green sphere layer. Remove excess branch parts.

Step 22

Apply blend mode to the layer with branches. Multiplication (Multiply) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 65%. Add a layer style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) settings, see below.

Step 23

Insert an image with an old barn into your document. Remove the bottom area using a layer mask, as you did in the previous steps. This will allow you to adjust the remote area several times, if necessary. Use a black brush to erase areas and a white one to restore them. To gently process the bottom edge, erase it with a translucent texture brush.

Step 24

Create several adjustment layers: Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), Color balance (Color Balance) Levels (Levels) and Brightness / Contrast. Apply the settings of the parameters as in the screenshots below or play with the settings in search of the best combinations.

Step 25

Big soft Brush (Brush) Delete selected areas on adjustment layer masks Levels (Levels) and Brightness / Contrast.

Step 26

You should get something like this.

Step 27

Insert an image with roots into your document and erase the excess background with the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool). Transform the roots to the green sphere using the free transform options in the menu. Editing – Transform – Free Transform (Edit> Transform> Free Transformation) or Ctrl +T.

Step 28

Add a layer mask to the root layer, then activate a thumbnail of this layer and go to the menu Selection – Color Range (Select> Color Range). Click the pipette in the green area below and click OK. In your document, a selection will appear approximately like in the screenshot below.

Step 29

Without removing the selection, make an active mask of the layer with the roots and erase the selected green spots without affecting the roots. Then go to the menu again. Selection – Color Range (Select> Color Range) and this time click the pipette on the yellow, light brown background areas near the roots. Loading selection. Also on the mask, remove the selected areas of the background without affecting the roots. Now create a temporary white layer below the root layer to see the quality of the result of your actions.

Step 30

Repeat the previous steps several times. In the final, you can erase and correct the outline of the roots without the Color Range, simply using a textured brush, but note that the background does not have to be completely clean. Now on the menu Editing – Transform – Warp (Edit> Transform> Warp) correct the shape of the roots, making it more spherical.

Step 31

Now you can remove the temporary white layer.

Step 32

In order to correct the brightness and color of the shadow of the roots, we will create several adjustment layers. It will be – Selective color correction (Selective color), Color balance (Color Balance) and Levels (Levels). See settings in the screenshots below. After correction, erase the right and left parts on the mask of the layer layer with a large soft brush.

Step 33

Create a new empty layer above the layer with roots, load the selection of the green sphere and fill the selected area on the new layer with any color. Install Fill (Fill) the layer at 0% and in the styles of the layer, apply the style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay). The position of the gradient is the same as you set up for the green tree (sphere) in step 14.

Step 34

Open the tree image, unlock the background layer and load the background selection with Magic wand (Magic Wand Too), then clear selected areas. Erase the bottom of the image Eraser (Eraser Tool).

Step 35

Place a tree with a transparent background at the very top of the layers palette of your document. Set this layer Opacity (Opacity) by 94%. Now add a new adjustment layer with clipping mask. Selective color correction (Selective color) and then adjust the layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). See settings below.

Step 36

To create a shadow effect on the roof, create a new layer under the tree layer and draw a simple shape as in the screenshot below. Process the left edge with a tool. Blur (Blur Tool) and install Fill (Fill) layer at 0%. Now apply the style Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay) to this layer.

Step 37

Insert another image with the roots and delete the areas marked in red.

Step 38

Create several adjustment layers with clipping mask – Selective color correction (Selective color), Color balance (Color Balance) and Levels (Levels). Settings below in the screenshots. On the layer mask using a soft round brush, erase small areas marked in red.

Step 39

Go back to the layers with the sky. Group all layers with the sky and its adjustment layers. Duplicate the group and merge it. Place the merged layer above all created layers. Add a layer mask to this layer and fill it with black. Activate the tool Brush (Brush) white, soft round and with Opacity (Opacity) about 16-20%. Now on the layer mask, restore some areas of the upper branches of the tree and the edge of the green sphere, as marked in red in the screenshot below.

Step 40

Make a copy of the merged group again and place it over the layer you just created from the previous step. Open the palette Channels (Channels) and duplicate the red channel. Make a copy of the channel more contrast using Levels (Levels). Then with the key held downCtrl Click on the red channel thumbnail to load the selection of white areas or click the small icon at the bottom of the channel palette for the same action.

Step 41

Without removing the selection, return the visibility of the composite channel RGB and go to the layers palette. Invert the selection in the menu Selection – Inversion (Select> Inverse). After that, clear the selected area. You should have something like this.

Step 42

Add a layer mask to the layer with white clouds and erase the red areas on it. Just leave the clouds visible in the lower left and right side of the photo manipulation.

Step 43

Create a new white layer and go to the menu. Filter – Distortion Correction (Filter> Lens Correction) and tab Customized (Custom) Apply a vignette effect.

Step 44

Apply blend mode to the created layer. Multiplication (Multiply) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 70%. Add a layer mask to it and fill it with a linear black and white gradient.

Step 45

Merge all created layers.

Step 46

Now you need to retouch the combined layer. Hide the poor-quality connections of the edges of the composition objects with the tool Stamp(Stamp Tool). To make the edges smoother between the branching tree and the green leaves, take a texture brush for the stamp. Now place the cursor on the leaves and with the Alt key held down, click on them to determine the pattern for the stamp. Then add a few green spots above the branches. Repeat this action several times to hide all rough edges. You can use the same method to fix poor edges between the sky and the barn.

Step 47

To fix some errors, you can also use the tool. Patch (Patch tool). Create a selection at the borders between the various photo manipulation objects and the mouse, drag it to the appropriate area to mask the problem edges. When you release the mouse button, the patch tool will fix the previously selected area based on the selected pixels.

Step 48

Fix branches with the tool Finger(Smudge Tool).

Step 49

Duplicate the retouched layer and apply a correction in the menu. Image – Correction – Gradient Map (Image> Adjustment> Gradient map). See settings below.

Step 50

Duplicate the gradient map layer. Apply an overlay to the bottom layer. Multiplication (Multiply) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 14%, and leave the overlay mode on the top layer. Usual (Normal) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) to 18.

Step 51

Insert an image with stars into the document and apply to it Autoton (Auto Tone) and Auto Contrast (Auto Cotrast). Blend mode for this layer change to Screen (Screen). Now open Levels (Levels) and move the black marker slightly to the right until the background near the stars is completely transparent. You can remove some stars.

Step 52

Insert an image of old paper into your document and make it black and white in the menu Image – Correction – Black and White (Image> Adjustments> Black and White). Leave the default settings. Change this layer overlay mode to Soft light (Soft Light) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) to about 79%.

And here is the final result!
