Create a little alien in Photoshop

In this lesson you will learn how to create a little alien in a bank. You will also learn how to create interesting images using various photos and Photoshop.

To achieve your goal, you will use the following tools and filters:

Selection tools (Selection Tools).
Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn).
Instruments transformation (Transform Tool).
Layer styles.
Layer blending modes.
Correction layer.

Let’s start.

Materials for the lesson:

Archive

Note: comments on screenshots are translated.

Step 1. This is the final image. At the end of this lesson you can create something like this.

Step 2. Open a new document 1500 X 1250 pixels.
Resolution: 125.
Background color: white (FFFFFF).
Leave a name for this layer – “Background”, we will not work on this layer for long.

Step 3. This image of the mushroom was provided by ?? Pxleyes for the contest.
You can download the image from the archive.
Save image as.
File name “Mushroom”.
Save this file where you can quickly get it.

Step 4. Open the file “Mushroom” in Photoshop.
Leave a name for this layer – “Mushroom”.
Use the tool Oval area (CircularMarquee Tool), (M) to make an oval selection marked in red.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) selection on a new layer. Name the new layer “Head”.

Step 5. We will use this form to make the head of our little monster.
Duplicate the “Head” layer and name the new layer “Body”. Soon we will work with this layer.

Step 6. Filter – Plastic – Deformation (Filter – Liquify – Warp).
Using a 125 pixel brush, try to get the look shown in the image.
This is the beginning of the formation of the head of the alien.

Step 7. Make a copy of the modified layer “Head”. Do not rename this layer.
Edit – Transformation – Flip Vertically (Edit-Transform-FlipVertical).
Place it below the original head layer.
Reuse Filter – Plastic – Deformation (Filter – Liquify – Warp), just like before.
Add a shadow with the tool Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O).

Step 8. Let’s start creating eyes.
Using the selection tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M), make a round selection, marked in red.

Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection.
Name this layer “Eye 1”.
Use layer styles Stamping and relief (Bevel / Emboss) and Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). Leave the automatic parameters. If the shadows do not look like mine, then you should move the small slider to the left to darken it more.
Make a copy of the layer “Eye 1”. Name the new layer “Eye 2”.

Step 9. Formation of the eyeball.
(See Fig. 1) Use the tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M) to create a circular selection. Fill the selection with white (Ffffff).
Use a soft brush of 30 – 40 pixels to add colors around. Opacity – 50%, color # B7CEDE (Blue colour).

(See Fig. 2) Create another circular selection above the white circle layer. This time apply a gradient of two colors. # 403228 Brown (in the foreground) and # EABB23 Yellow (background).
Add a small circle above the gradient layer. Fill the selection with black. Create another small selection and using a small soft brush, paint it with white.

Step 10. We merge the three layers of our future eyes.
New layer name – “Eyeball 1”.
Duplicate this layer and name the duplicate Eyeball 2.
Place these layers above the “Head” and “Eye” layers.
Merge the layers “Eye 1, Eye 2, Eyeball 1, Eyeball 2” and “Head”, as well as a layer with a copy of the head, which we did earlier. Name this layer “Head”.

Step 11. Filter – Plastic – Deformation(Filter – Liquify – Warp).
Warp your eyes on the “Head” layer, as shown in the image.
Activate the “Body” layer and place it below the “Head” layer.

Step 12. Deform the “Body” layer
Filter – Plastic – Deformation (Filter – Liquify – Warp).
Use a 125 size brush with a pressure of 50.
Try to get the view shown in the image. The form should not necessarily be the same, but should be close to the shape of the body. You can make changes later.

Step 13. Place the “Head” at the top of the “Body”.
Use the tool Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) to add a shadow on the left side of the body.
Do not overdo it. Use a soft brush to make a tan.

Step 14. At this stage we will make the arms and legs of the little guy.
Use the tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool) (L) to highlight the area marked in white. In shape, it should resemble the shape of the leg. (Fig. 1)

Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection. Name this layer “Leg 1”.

Use the tool Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) to darken the area a bit on the right and left side. Use a 5px hard brush and draw dashes, fingers. (Fig. 2)
Use Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) to erase some parts on a given area, as if it were feet.

Step 15. Place the “Leg 1” layer on top of the “Body” layer.
Make a copy of the “Leg 1” layer by dragging the layer onto the icon Create a new layer at the bottom of the layers window.
Change the name of this layer to “Leg 2” and place it below the “Body” layer.
Use the tool Transformations (Transform Tool) (Ctrl + T) to position this layer as shown in the image.

Step 16. For the formation of hands, use the layer “Leg 1” or “Leg 2”. The name of the new layer is “Hand 1”. (Fig. 1.)
Filter – Plastic – Deformation (Filter – Liquify – Warp). You should get the form as shown in rice 2 Place this layer behind the “Body” layer.
Duplicate the “Hand 1” layer, name it “Hand 2” Fig. 3 Place this layer above the “Body” layer.
Use the tool Transformations (Transform Tool) (Ctrl + T) to position the arm as shown in the image Fig. four.

Step 17. Making a tail.
Choose a tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso) (L) and select the part of the body. Figure 1.
Try to get a form like mine. Do not give a name to the layer.
Use the tool Dimmer (Burn Tool) (O) to add a tail to dark areas. Fig. 2
Place this layer under the “Body” layer. Figure 3.
Combine all the layers that we used to create an alien. Let’s name the new layer “Alien”.

Step 18. You should have something like this.
Use a small 3 pixel hard brush and white color to draw the dash – teeth. Draw them not on a new layer. Draw them on top of the layer.

Step 19. This cracked image is taken from the Pxleyes drain. It is in the archive.

You can also upload images posted in the following steps by following these steps:
Right-click on the wall image.
Save image as.
Give the file the name “Wall”.
Save it in a convenient place for you.

Step 20. You can download this image with cracks.

Step 21 Open the file “Wall” in Photoshop and place it in the main document.

Step 22 Name the new layer “Wall”.
Image – Correction – Curves (Image – Adjustments – Curves).
entrance: 100
Output: 20
So the wall will become darker. You can darken the walls later, almost at the end of this lesson.

Step 23 Use the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) to make a rectangular selection of the part indicated in white.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection.
Name the new layer “Earth”.

Step 24. Edit – Transform – Flip Horizontal(Edit- Transform- FlipHorizontal).
Use the tool Transformations (Transform Tool) (Ctrl + T) to place this layer on the right, as shown in the image. The idea is to make the layer not look like the “Wall” layer.
Image – Correction – Curves (Image – Adjustments – Curves).
entrance: 70
Output: 40

Step 25. Blur the top of the layer “Earth” using the tool Blur (Blur) (R).

Step 26. Using the selection tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M), make a rectangular selection, as shown in the image. Fill the selection with a two-color gradient.
Foreground color # 2ABDC4
Background color: # DA7379
Add a layer style: Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).
Opacity (Opacity): 75%.
Angle (Angle): 160
Bias (Distance): 60.
Pull off (Choke): 25.
The size (Size): 80%.
Name this layer “Bank”.

Step 27. Now using the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee) Tool (M), make a thinner rectangular selection. Fill the selection with a two-color gradient.
Foreground color # 4FC4CB
Background color # Ffffff
Blend mode: Lightening (Screen).
Opacity: 55%
Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Radius 4.0
Name this layer “Blick”.

Step 28. Change the layer blending mode on the “Bank” layer to Hard light (Hard Light).

Step 29. Take the image of rusty metal. You can find it on Pxleyes stock, from Mqtrf, I was allowed to use it for this lesson. Or, you can download the image by following these steps:
Right-click on the image.
Save image as.
Name the file “Rust”.
Save it in the right place.

Step 30. Now you can save your image.

Step 31 Open the file “Rust” in Photoshop and name the layer “Rust”.

Step 32 Using tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M), create an oval selection from the area marked in white.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection.
You can choose any area for rust for your work.

Step 33 Name the new layer “Cover”.
Add a layer style Embossing and Relief (Bevel / Emboss).
External bevel (OuterBevel).
Depth (Depth) 400%.
The size (Size) 10.
Angle (Angle) 45.
Use tools Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn) (O) to add flare and shadow to the lid.

Step 34 Make another 3 copies of the “Cover” layer. Merge these layers so that they form one layer and name it “Lid”.

Note translator– before merging, move each layer with a lid just above the bottom so that the lid looks like the image below.

Place the merged layer above the “Bank” layer. Use Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) to erase the areas shown in the image.

Step 35 Make a copy of the “Cover” layer. Put this layer after the “Bank” layer and lower it below, as you can see, it can be seen due to the transparency of the “Cover” layer. Name this layer “bottom cover”.
There is a little blue color left on the top of the bottom cover layer. We will erase it in the next step.

Step 36 Erasing blue will give the bank a roundness. To do this, use Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E).

Step 37. She already looks just great!
Make two more copies of the “Cover” layer. Use the tool Transformations (Transform Tool) (Ctrl + T) to make them smaller.
Place one layer on top of another, as shown in the image. Merge these layers and name the new layer “Little Cover”.
Place it above the “Cover” layer, as shown in the image.

Step 38 Use Rectangle selection (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) to make a selection on the Rust layer.
You can choose any part of the image from which it will be good to make rusty pipes. I selected the right side of the document, from the area from which we made the top part of the cover of the right side of the document.

Step 39. Use tools Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn) (O) to add several light and dark sections on the pipe, as shown in the image.
Name this layer Rusty Pipes.

Step 40. Make a copy of the “Rusty Pipes” layer and place it to the left of the main layer. Make this layer smaller with the tool. Transformation (Transform) (Ctrl + T).
Name this layer “Rusty Tubes 2”. Place it above the “Cover” layer.
Use Eraser (Erase Tool) (E) to erase a small part of the pipe and make its base rounded.

Step 41 Use the tool Rectangle selection (Rectangular MarqueeTool) (M) to make a selection on the “Rust” layer.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection. Name the layer “Rusted pipes 3”.
Use tools Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn) (O), to also give highlights and shadows, similar to the actions with other pipes.
Place this layer below the “Bank” layer.

Step 42 Make a copy of the layer “Rusty pipes 3”. Layer name “Rusted pipes 4”.
Use the tool Transformation (Transform Too) l (Ctrl + T) to make the pipe thinner. Place this layer below the “Rusted pipes 3” layer.

Step 43 Now we make the connection pipe. Use the tool Rectangular area (RectangularMarqueeTool) (M) to make a small selection from the “Rusty Tube 2” layer. Use Transformation (TransformTool) (Ctrl + T) to expand the selection.
Use layer style Embossing and Relief (Bevel / Emboss). Leave the parameters as they are, changing only the hatching to 130.

Use Eraser(Eraser Tool) (E) to remove the top and bottom parts of the layer to make it appear rounded.
Name the new layer “Connection”.

Step 44. Make a copy of the “Connection” layer, name this new layer “Connection 2”. Place this layer to the right of the first connection.
Use Eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) to erase part of the left side and make it rounded, as you used to do with the first connection. Leave the right side unchanged.

Step 45. Now back to the “Bank” layer. Make a copy of this layer, name the new layer “Bank 2”. This layer should be placed above the “Bank” layer.
Add a two-color gradient to this layer.
Foreground color # 745F2D.
Background color # 3B4735.
Make a gradient from the left side of the can to the right, this will add a can of green-brown tint. Since the blending mode is set to Hard light (Hard Light), brightness and transparency will be clearly visible.
Activate the “Blick” layer. Use on it Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur), 2 more times, but already with a radius of 5. Make a copy of this layer and name it “Glare 2”. Place it on the left side of the jar.

Step 46 Use the tool Rectangular area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) (M) to make a small copy of the “Rusty Pipe” layer. The name of the layer is “Rusty Pipes 5”, this layer should be placed below and behind the “Bank” layer.
It should look as if the pipes are inside the jar.

Step 47. Using tool Oval area (Elliptical Marquee Tool) (M) make an oval selection. This will be the waterline.
Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selection.
Name the new layer “Waterline”.
Use a two-color gradient.
Foreground color # 514C40.
Background color # 745F2D.
Draw a gradient from top to bottom. Opacity 50%. Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur), radius 4.0.

Step 48 Use a brush with a spray size of 18 pixels. Opacity 50%.
Draw any lines or spots on the top of the Waterline layer (the spots should not be on another layer). Use color # BAB7AB for them.
Use Finger(Smudge Tool) (R) to smudge lines or stains in a circle, giving the shape of water.

Step 49 Merge the layers “Rusty pipes 1 and 2” and the layers “Connection 1 and 2”. The name of the new layer will be “Rusted pipes 1”.
Now let’s make a shadow for these pipes. Make a copy of the layer “Rusty pipes 1”.
Select the layer and fill the selection with black.
Change the layer blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply). Opacity is 70%. Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur) radius 4.0.
Place this layer below the “Rusty Tubes 1” layer and the “Bank” layer. Name the new layer “Shadow 1”. Move this layer slightly to the right of the jar.

Step 50. Combine the layers “Rusty pipes 3 and 4”. Name the new layer “Rusted pipes 2”.
Make a copy of this layer, name the new layer “Shadow 2”.
To make a shadow, repeat the steps from the previous step, fill the selected layer with black color, changing the layer’s blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), Opacity (Opacity) 70% and applying Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur), radius 4.0.
Move this layer down a bit.

Step 51 You should have something like this.

Step 52 We will correct a little bit the image of the Alien.
Place the “Alien” layer below the “Bank” layer.
It turns out as if someone else is inside the jar.
Use a hard brush with a diameter of 5 pixels and white color to draw bubbles in the water. Add layer style to bubbles Embossing and Relief (Bevel / Emboss). Leave the default settings.

Step 53 Create a new layer for the bubbles and name this layer Bubbles.
Combine all the layers used in the creation of banks: Lid, Bank, Glare 1 and 2, Waterline, Bubbles, Bank 1 and 2, Bottom cover, Rusty pipes 5.
Name the new layer “Alien in a jar”.

Step 54 Glare and shadows.
In this image, the light falls on the left side, therefore, using Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn) (O), add highlights and shadows, as shown in the image.

Step 55 Make a copy of the “Alien in the bank” layer. Name the new layer “Alien in Shadow Bank”. (You can name the layer as you like).
Fill the selection layer with black just like you did with the other shadows.
Change the layer blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), Opacity (Opacity) 70%, Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter- Blur-Gaussian Blur), radius 4.0.
Place the layer with the shadow below the “Alien in the bank” layer and move it slightly to the right.

Step 56 Use a hard brush with a size of 9 pixels to draw the wires. I used red and black colors, you can use your own. Add a layer style Embossing and Relief (Bevel / Emboss) with default parameters.
Name the layer “Wires”. Place them as shown in the image. Make wire shadows just like you did before.

Step 57 Darken the “Wall” and “Earth” layers a bit more.
Image – Correction – Curves (Image – Adjustments – Curves).
For walls: entrance: 75 and Conclusion: 50.
For the land: entrance: 70 and Conclusion: 45.

Step 58 To finish our work, we add highlights to the walls and the ground, as well as to the rest of the image.
To do this, look at the image, and using Clarifier (Dodge Tool) (O), a soft brush of 300 pixels, Exposition (Exposure) 60%, start looking for areas to be highlighted. These areas are marked in yellow.

Step 59 We have reached the end of the lesson. I hope I was able to teach you new techniques to improve the work in Photoshop. I know that it can be difficult for those who are just beginning to explore the wonders of working with programs like Photoshop. But it’s nice to see people willing to spend time reading and achieving their goals, ready to learn something new every day.

I also wish you the best in life, and thank you for your patience. If there are any questions regarding some of the steps in this lesson, I will be happy to give you a hand. Here at Pxleyes, the artists community, and we are waiting for you to come in and look at the work we are doing. We love to learn and teach others. Have a good journey through the world of art. Good luck.
