Create a mysterious autumn collage with a girl in Photoshop

In this lesson, I will show you how to create an emotional scene with a girl on a swing in Photoshop. You will learn how to create beautiful lighting effects, how to create the effect of falling leaves, as well as how to focus the lighting and all the elements of the scene. You will learn about the technique of creating manipulations, which will help you to create your works effectively and quickly.

Stages of the lesson

This picture represents the concept of the seven deadly sins. The girl is represented by Eve and now she regrets about the committed misconduct. To create this picture, we first use the image of the forest as a background, then we will add an image of the model, as well as some details of bushes and trees to add depth of field to our scene, in addition, we will add falling leaves that add dynamics to the scene. In conclusion, we will apply the texture and make a color correction to create an emotional scene. To complete this tutorial, you will need Photoshop CS6 or CC. Having a tablet will help with this lesson.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop. Install the following sizes Width (Width): 3000 px, Height (Height): 3503 px. Open the image with the forest. Move this image to our working paper, which will be the main image.

Step 2

Next, we will add a dramatic atmosphere to the image with the forest. Create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Using a soft brush, brush color is light gray (# deded8), paint over the center of the image, and then use a dark gray brush (# 545563), paint over the edges of the image as shown in the screenshot below to the left. Add a slight blur to soften the effect, let’s go. Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur). Set the blur radius to 180 px.

Step 3

Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft shine(soft light). In the screenshot below, you can see that now, the lighting has become brighter in the center and darker around the edges.

Step 4

Next, add a model image to our working paper.

Step 5

Using tool Pen (pen tool), separate the image of the girl from the background. Choose a tool Pen (pen tool). Make sure that the option is selected in the settings of this tool. Contours (Path), not Layer layer (Shape). Create a contour around the image of the girl. Be patient to get the most accurate selection.

Once you have closed the contour, right-click on the created contour and in the window that appears, select the option To form a selected area (Make Selection). Next, click OK and you will receive an active selection around the image of the girl.

Step 6

Step 7

If the selected image has defects, you can correct them with a small diameter brush. To do this, you need to use a black brush on the layer layer mask.

Step 8

Next, go Filter – Plastic (Filter – Liquify). Using tool Deformation (Forward Warp Tool), warp the girl’s dress. Brush size 70, Pressure brushes(Pressure) can be set between 20 – 25.

Step 9

Next, we will reduce the saturation of the image of the girl using the adjustment layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Reduce value Saturation (Saturation) to -48.

Step 10

The clipping mask is very useful when exposed to only one element of the composition. Since we work with the image of the model, then creating a trim mask will help you to correct only the selected layer. To do this, right-click on the adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) that you created in the previous step and in the window that appears, select the option Create clipping mask(Create Clipping Mask). Further, the adjustment layer will look like in the screenshot below, this means that this adjustment layer will affect only the underlying layer.

Step 11

If you want to reduce the saturation of only the skin of the girl, then, being on the layer mask of the correction layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation), press the keys (Ctrl + I) to invert the selection to completely fill the layer mask with black. And then, using a white brush (50% opacity), paint over the areas where you want to reduce saturation. In this case, paint over the girl’s skin. You can use a large-diameter brush, and you do not need to worry that you paint over the edge of the image, because You use a clipping mask, therefore, when working with a brush, you will not touch the background at all.

Step 12

To change the color of the dress, we again apply the adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue and Saturation). Set the value Color tone (Hue) at -53, and the value Saturation (saturation) at -18. Do not forget to convert this adjustment layer to a clipping mask so that the correction affects only the image of the girl. Therefore, be careful not to touch the girl’s skin with a brush.

Step 13

Create a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Choose a brush a piece of chalk(chalk) Draw curls of hair. Using tool Pipette (color picker), you can select the same shade of hair. Using the tablet, it will be much easier for you to draw hair locks, if you do not have a tablet, use the already prepared Hair brush or use the mouse. Brush size 3 or 2, brush opacity 100%, in the brush settings select the option Pen pressure (pen pressure).

Step 14

Create another new layer. Choose a lighter shade for the brush to add more hair curls and add light highlights to the hair. Repeat the whole process as in the previous step.

Step 15

To make the girl’s dress more interesting, finish the flowering threads, using a pipette, select the color shade from the dress. Use the same brush that you used to create the curls of hair. You can choose a lighter shade to make the dress more expressive.

Step 16

Create a new layer. Using a soft brush, brush size 200px, brush opacity 20%, paint over the model, as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 17

Create a new layer. Using the Rays of Light brush, add rays of light to the top of the scene. Brush color # ffeb99, brush opacity 50%. Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).

Step 18

Next, go Layer – New Adjustment Layer (Layer – New adjustment layer) and select Curves (curves). Set the curve as shown in the screenshot below:

Next, go to the layer mask of the adjustment layer. Curves (curves) and using a soft black brush, paint over the areas where the contrast is too saturated to weaken the effect of the correction layer, and also reduce the layer opacity to 70%

Step 19

Add leaves to our scene to create a motion effect. Add leaves as shown in the screenshot below. Make sure the leaf layer is below the model layer.

Next, go Filter – Blur – Motion Blur (Filter – Blur – Motion Blur). Install Angle (angle) at 53, and Bias (distance) at 40.

Step 20

To the leaf layer, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (hue / saturation). Reduce value Saturation (saturation) to -45. Remember to convert this adjustment layer to a clipping mask for the layer with leaves.

Step 21

To the layer with leaves, add a layer mask and using a black brush, hide the individual leaves. In addition, if necessary, you can reduce the opacity of the layer with leaves.

Step 22

To add leaves to the ground, you need to change the perspective of the image with the leaves. Add an image with leaves to our working paper. Activate the tool Free Transformation (Free Transform (Ctrl + T). Position the image with the leaves, as shown in the screenshot below, then right-click on the transformation area and in the window that appears, select the option Perspective (Perspective).

Select the top right anchor point, then hold down the (shift) key to avoid distortion and drag the anchor point to the center of the image.

Next, select the lower anchor point, pull this anchor point in the opposite direction from the center of the image. Press the (enter) key to save the changes.

Step 23

You can experiment with perspective until you are satisfied with the result. Arrange the image correctly, add a layer mask and using a black brush, hide the extra areas with leaves. Also reduce the opacity of the layer to 60%.

Step 24

Next, let’s add a shrub to the fore. As soon as you add a bush, let’s go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (filter – blur – Gaussian blur). Set the blur radius to 5 px.

Step 25

Duplicate the bush layer twice (Ctrl + J). You can change the size of the bushes using transformation (ctrl + T). Group layers with bushes in one group. To do this, select all 3 layers with bushes, and then press the keys (Ctrl + G) to merge the selected layers into a group. On top of the layer with the new group, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (hue / Saturation) to decrease the value Saturation (saturation) to -70. Transform this adjustment layer into a clipping mask to the layer with the group so that the correction affects only the image of the bushes. You can also decrease the value. Brightness (lightness) to -25.

Step 26

Repeat the whole process, only this time, add the branches of the apple tree. Apply filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian blur), blur radius 5px.

Step 27

Add an image of clouds to our scene. To the layer with clouds, add a layer mask and using a soft black brush, paint over the bottom edge of the image to match the entire scene.

Change the blending mode for the cloud layer to Soft light (soft light), and also reduce the opacity of the layer to 50%

Step 28

Create a new layer. Using a chalk brush, the brush color is light gray, the brush opacity is 20%, add a slight mist effect.

Step 29

Create a new adjustment layer. Curves (curves). Set the curve as shown in the screenshot below. This will help to highlight the image of the girl, because we’ll darken the background.

Next, go to the layer mask of this adjustment layer. Curves (curves) and using a soft black brush, hide the effect of correcting the curves in the center of the image, leaving dark areas along the edge of the scene.

Step 30

Add a texture to our working paper, placing this texture on top of all other layers. Reduce texture saturation to -50. Change the blending mode for the texture layer to Soft light (soft light), and also reduce the opacity of the layer to 50%

Step 31

In conclusion, we will make a color correction to add dramatic hues to our picture. Add adjustment layer Color search (Color Lookup), then select the Late Sunset option.

Next, go Image – External Channel (Image – Apply Image).

Now, reduce the layer opacity to 50% and we have completed the lesson.

Thank you for being with me. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that it will help you to improve your technique of work in the program Photoshop.
