Create a photo manipulation with a turtle in Photoshop

In this lesson we will learn to create a partial immersion in water from scratch.

Source materials:

We also need a brush of clouds and waterfalls.

Step 1. My choice was on this turtle due to the fact that it has a great hump, which will be useful to me in the future.
Duplicate the original image with the turtle (Ctrl + J) and hide the bottom (first) layer. Now erase the sky as shown in the image below. Leave only the turtle and sand.

You can do this in any convenient way for you: a layer mask, a feather, or a polygonal lasso.
You decide. For now, leave everything as in the picture.
Name the turtle layer – “Turtle”.

Step 2. Now open the image with the ocean, as in the picture below:

Now select the image with the ocean and place it on top of the layer with the turtle. This image is smaller than the image with the turtle, so we press Ctrl + T and holding down the Shift button, we make our image large as in the image below:

It is necessary to reduce the transparency of this layer and to measure the horizon line of the sea with the line on the layer with a turtle. I will show it in the image below:

Step 3. Now you need to select the Tool Rectangular Area (Rectangular MarqueeTool) and select the whole part of the sea. The selection area is shown in the image below:

After making a selection, click Ctrl+T and click with the Right Mouse Button – choose from the dropdown menu Distortion (Distort). This will help you distort the edges of the selection.

Distort the bottom edges as shown in the image below. I do this so that the perspective of the water looks good, according to the overall image.

Bring transparency to this layer.
Your image should look something like this:

Step 4. I just realized that I need for the future the original lighting of the sky and it is opposite to the lighting on the turtle. Thus, it is necessary to press Ctrl+T on the image of the sky and the ocean, press the Right Mouse Button and select Flip Horizontal (Flip Horizontal).

Step 5. The layer with the image of the ocean is renamed to “Ocean”.

Step 6. Fine. Preparation is over, go to the beginning of the lesson. Create Layer Mask(Clip Mask) on the layer “Ocean”.

Step 7. This step can be quite complicated, but very useful.
While on the mask of the layer with the turtle and holding down the Ctrl key, click on the thumbnail of the “Turtle” layer, which will allow us to create a selection of the entire turtle, as shown in the image below:

Now we erase with a black brush a piece of water and sky from a turtle, making it look like the screenshot below:

Step 8. Now I have chosen this image to work with the underwater part.

Take this image and paste it under the turtle layer. Now we will give it dimensions, as in the picture below:

Let’s call this layer “Underwater”.

Step 9. Now create Layer Mask (Clip Mask) on the “Turtle” layer and wipe off the sharp edges of the sand behind with a soft brush, as in the image below. This will give the prospect an underwater scene.

Step 10. Now open again the image with the underwater part, as in Step 08, and place it above the layer with the turtle, also adjusting the image size. If part of the water falls on the top of the turtle, which is above the water, simply wipe it off with the usual eraser . On this layer create Mask Layer (Clip Mask) and erase the turtle body with a soft brush with low transparency, as in the picture below:

Step 11. Now duplicate the layer (Ctrl + J) with the sky and the ocean and blur it as shown in the image below:

Now, lower the layer with the blurred ocean with just a few clicks of the keyboard button (down arrow), after selecting the Tool Move V (Move Tool). Now erase the top of this layer, leaving only blurred borders.

Step 12. I think the basics of how to create an underwater image have been explained.
Now I will be working one on one with lighting and colors, as it would be too difficult to explain step by step how to do this.

From the translator: butthe sec finished the lesson on the most interesting and important place, but he left PSD-the file I tried to figure out and briefly continue the image correction.

Editor’s Note: The following text was compiled by the translator itself based on the author’s psd file.

Next, take the source of the landscape, pre-cooked. We only need sky from it. Separating it from the ground in a convenient way for you, I did it using the Tool Rectangular Area (Rectangular Marquee Tool) and pasted into our document. Erased eraser excess on a turtle. Set the layer blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply).

Create a new adjustment layer by clicking on the button at the bottom of the layers palette. Choose Hue / Saturation Hue / Saturation (Ctrl + U). And remove saturation at -100, blending mode of this layer Hard light (Hard Light), opacity of the layer (Opacity) 50.

Create a New Layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Next, take soft round brush with a little black transparency and dimming the underwater space on the left, as in the figure below.

We also darken under the belly of a turtle:

Open the image with the island.

Separate the island from the background in any way convenient for you, I did it using the Tool Fast Allocation (Quick Selection), call key W. And paste into our document. Push Ctrl+T and holding the key Shift, we reduce the image to the necessary size. Place the island on the hump of a turtle.

Press again Ctrl+T, click the Right Mouse Button and select in the dropdown menu Deformation (Warp). Customize the image to the tortoise shell.

Now you need to adjust the colors and lighting on the island. All settings are approximate, you may want to experiment and make a correction to your taste and other methods. I changed a little Hue / Saturation Hue / Saturation (brightness -5, color tone -15), move the sliders to Color Balance Color Balance (+18, +7, -21) and used Curves Curves (output 166, input 193).
Next, you need to darken the island on the left, and to lighten the right, the easiest way is to use the tools Clarifier (Dodge) and Dimmer (Burn). We also erase the edges of the island, which are unnecessary for us, so that it is only on the shell. You should have something like this:

Create New Adjustment Layer with Brightness / Contrast (Brightness / Contrast), Brightness value 98. Add to this layer Layer Mask (Сlip Mask) and erase dark places, leaving them darkened. Opacity of this layer (Opacity) 30.

Create a New Layer (Shift + Ctrl + N). Take a brush Clouds and add them to our work. The opacity of this layer is 30.

Create a New Adjustment Layer with Color Balance. Set the values as in the screenshot below:

Blend Mode – Soft light (Soft Light), Opacity of the layer (Opacity) 20.

Create a New Group by clicking on the icon under the layers palette. We take the brush “Waterfalls” and, creating a new layer, paint one waterfall one by one. Place them as in the screenshot below:

Now we need to give a little chaos near the clutches of the tortoise – sand and bulbs. We will need a brush like drops or splashing water. Unfortunately, the author did not share them with us, they look like this, maybe you will find something similar, but no, you can skip this step. Blend mode – Overlap (Overlay)

Create New Corrective Layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Satutation): Saturation -100, layer blending mode – Blackout (Darken):

Create one more Corrective Layer Hue / Saturation (Hue / Satutation): Saturation -30, blending mode – Normal (Normal):

Merge all layers with Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E, place this layer on top of all and add some sharpness to it using filter Sharpness (Filter – Sharpen).
Here is the final image, I hope you will succeed too!
