Create a photo manipulation with an abandoned house.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a scene with an abandoned house with ghosts in Photoshop. You will learn about the combination of images, work with masks. We will perform color correction to create a dark and gloomy atmosphere.

Stages of the lesson

First we will create the background by combining the three stock images. Next we will add an image of the house, the crow and the birds, combining them with the help of adjustment layers, a mask and a brush. Next, we will conduct color correction, contrast correction, to create a dark atmosphere. In conclusion, we will add red color to the window of the house. To complete this lesson, you will need a version of Photoshop CS3 or higher.

So let’s get started!

To complete the lesson you will need:

  1. House
  2. Landscape
  3. Sky
  4. Raven
  5. Brushes Birds

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the following settings, which are shown in the screenshot below:

Step 2

Open the original image with Sky 1. Use the tool Move (Move Tool (V), move this image to our working document:

Step 3

Next, open the original image with Sky 2. Also use the tool Move (Move Tool (V), move this image to our working document, placing this image on top of the layer with sky 1, as shown in the screenshot below:

Change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light), layer opacity 100%:

Step 4

To the sky layer 2, add a layer mask through the bottom toolbar. Next, using a soft black brush, process the hard edge of the image on the layer mask to combine this image with the sky 1, creating a smooth transition:

Step 5

To the sky 2 layer, add an adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask to make the image lighter. Let’s go Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Curves):

Next, go to the layer mask of this adjustment layer and using a soft black brush, varying the opacity of the brush between 10 – 60%, paint over some parts of the sky. The main task is to reduce the brightness and add more contrast to the sky:

Step 6

Open the image with the landscape. To remove the cars in this image, create a new layer and select the tool Stamp (Clone Tool (S). Using this tool, remove the specified parts:

Step 7

Press the keys (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E) to merge the layer with the background and the layer with the stamp correction into one layer. Move the merged layer to our working paper. Apply a transformation (Ctrl + T) to transform the image, as shown in the screenshot below:

Using tool Magic wand (Magic Wand Tool), hide the elevation and sky on the layer mask of this image:

Step 8

Next, add a correction layer to the landscape layer. Curves (Curves) as a clipping mask to darken this image:

Next, go to the layer mask of this adjustment layer and using a soft black brush with a very low opacity of 10 – 15%, reduce the effect of darkening in the areas that are shown in the screenshot below:

Step 9

Next, add a correction layer to the landscape layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) as a clipping mask to reduce the saturation of the landscape:

Step 10

Add a picture of the house to our working paper, placing the house as shown in the screenshot below:

First, remove the background in the house image with the tool. Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool):

Step 11

You may notice that the edges of the image are too hard after using this tool, in particular, this concerns the shrub that is near the house. To fix this, click Restore brushes (Reset Brushes) from the drop-down menu in the brush settings to set the default brush. Choose a brush Spray 24 pixels (Spatter 24 pixels) to process the edges of the shrub so that the shrub looks more natural. And also, using a soft black brush, soften the bottom edge of the house to combine the house with grass:

Step 12

Via Curves (Curves), darken the house a bit:

Next, go to the layer mask of this adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) and using a soft black brush, hide the blackout correction in the upper part to keep the upper part lighter and the lower part darker:

Step 13

Open the image with the raven, separate the image of the crow from the background. Move the selected image of the crow to our working paper, placing the crow on the roof of the house:

Step 14

Create two new layers on top of all other layers. Change the foreground color to black. Select the Birds brush. Draw birds in the sky, as shown in the screenshot below (do not forget to reduce the diameter of the brush to draw birds in the distance to add depth to the image):

Step 15

Add a new adjustment layer Gradient Map (Gradient Map) on top of all other layers. Default gradient colors (black and white gradient):

Step 16

I want to add a dark atmosphere to our scene. Create a new layer, set the foreground color to # 9d9d9d, and the background color to # 121212. Next, go Filter – Rendering – Clouds(Filter> Render> Clouds):

Convert this layer to the Smart Object, and also reduce the opacity of this layer to 50%:

Step 17

To the layer with fog, add a layer mask and with the help of a soft black brush, hide the fog effect in the sky:

Next, on the fog layer, apply the filter Gaussian blur (Gaussian Blur), for this we go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur). Set the blur radius to 90 px:

Step 18

The time has come for the color correction of our scene. Add a new adjustment layer Color Balance (Color Balance) on top of all other layers:

Step 19

Via Curves (Curves) darken the scene:

Next, go to the layer mask of this adjustment layer. Curves (Curves) and using a soft black brush, add contrast:

Step 20

In this step we will add a red glow from the window of the house. Create a new layer. Using tool Polygonal Lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool), create a selection around the window image, as shown in the screenshot below, set the feathering value to 3:

Next, go Editing – Run Fill (Edit> Fill (Shift + F5), fill the selected area with red (# ff0000):

Select tool again Rectilinear lasso (Polygonal Lasso Tool). Using this tool, create two selections with a feathering radius = 3, as shown in the screenshot below:

Add a layer mask and we get the following result:

Step 21

To add a glow effect to a window with a red color, double click on the layer to apply the layer style. External glow (Outer Glow):

Step 22

Create a new layer and using a soft brush with an opacity of 30-35%, the color of the brush is the same (# ff0000), paint over the brush under the window and on the grass:

Congratulations, we have completed the lesson! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
